  • Listening to this song years ago is what made me move back home to N.C. thank God for I got to spend some time with my mom before she passed.I love this song and the memories.

  • i'm gone too, but wish we could scrap most everything since then (1971) and then we would have the real carolina!

  • James Taylor, was from the beautiful home of the Univ. of N.C. "Tar Heels" in Chapel Hill, North Carolina!! This song is about the great state of North Carolina, not our "sister" state South Carolina---PERIOD!!! I'm from the beautiful Charlotte and Gastonia areas of N.C.!!

  • panthers SUCK SONG I LOVE IT SSO MUCH

  • So very definitely the best version. I have the Apple record and its version of "Something in the Way She Moves" is also splendid.

Sir Paul. My, my. Somewhere, John Lennon is laughing.

  • James Taylor graduated from the University of North Carolina and after 40 years is still making great music. Go Tarheels ! !

  • God, so many amazing memories from this state. I'm from Charlotte, but I love going and seeing the beauty of our mountains. Thanks for the wonderful pictures C:

  • Kicked out of the Biltmore House for playing the piano on a 3rd grade field trip from my elementary school about 3 miles from Biltmore in Asheville, this video does bring back tragic memories but more happy memories of L.A. (Lovely Asheville) and the beautiful Old North State and one of her most famous sons from the oldest state unversity in the USA, The University of North Carolina's Sir James Taylor.

  • Many thanks for posting the original version of the song, which features the great Sir Paul McCartney on bass--and which I've always preferred over the later version that James Taylor prefers.

  • @DrNSalmon --- you're very welcome.

  • @DrNSalmon Also George Harrison on background vocals! (uncredited on the album).

  • I live in Kannapolis,NC!!!!!!!!! ya

  • can anyone tell me at 2:01 where that is???

  • I sure do miss Wilmington NC. I will return someday. I hate these stupid Yankees.

  • @jason4485 amen buddy. thats where i hopefully am going for college

  • It was written about NC not SC. He's from NC and wrote it in London while missing his home state. Nice try SC. just sit back and enjoy the NC unofficial state song.

  • Nice job, I love the Carolinas

  • north. south. doesnt matter. james taylor nailed it. and left room for any other state that you could fit in there with it :) i heart this song!

  • The song was actually written about South Carolina but I don't mind sharing. I love both of the Carolinas.

  • @galamexa789

Poor galamexa 789, you need to look up the history of James Taylor and the song! It was written about Orange County NC = Chapel Hill, Carrboro area where he grew up from age 3 on. His dad wasa professor and then the Dean of the medical school there. SC has long been claiming a kniship to this song, but alas, We are proud to say, it is for sure about NC. PS... the history is available online @ Wikipedia!

  • @galamexa789 no. it was written about North Carolina. James Taylor grew up right near UNC Chapel Hill. sorry but your wrong lol

  • Awesome!!

Thanks for taking your time about showing NC to the world.

  • I'll be in the carolina's over the holiday's. Not 1st time there. It's like a 2nd home 2 me and I am Canadian!

  • *sighhss* nags head, north carolina<33 my home i love it and miss it vury much<3

  • Shit yeah NC best state in the union, better believe it Bro. Ain't no doubt in no one's mind.

  • Love it in Nc....Goldsboro Nc...Best place ever...Southern Hospitality..

  • Um.... I don't think so... Michael Jackson was a new-born baby when this song was written.

  • @BeHappy2day ummm when was this song written? (:

  • i miss north carolina i dream about my home land all the time one day im going home to my carolina

  • i like the live one he played in front of the audience. the second vid on related vids.

  • goin next week. not sure if it compares 2 bama though.

  • I love North Carolina. Most beautiful place in the world. I grew up in a small town called Indian Trail, just below Charlotte and Matthews. I had the greatest childhood there, always playing in the woods behind my neighborhood, and I'm going to make sure that when I have kids that they grow up in North Carolina. I love this song it always reminds me of my childhood. Thanks for posting this vid it brought tears to my eyes. I miss North Carolina and I'm going to go back some day.

  • @FranchizeBoi05 i HAVE BEEN THERE.iTS GREAT.

  • In the late 70's I went to an 'Outward Bound' camp in North Carolina, my friends were councilors there.( The most beautiful mountain I' ve ever been on.)They introduced me to this song. James Taylor is truly a legend in my mind. Is there a mountain there called Table Rock?

  • Is that the mountain I was on?

  • 1:12 was that picture taken in Ral. It looks like it is at Umstead Park

  • Asheville is a great place if u can avoid the hippie liberal douchebags

  • i'm from australia , and to me the song and scenery are both fantastic, i've searched high and low for this song version, glad i finally found it

  • Glad to hear you know the difference between this version & his later versions. This is the ORIGINAL version (recorded circa 1971) ... But this version disappeared from the market around 1975, because he'd recorded it under the Apple Records label in London (with Paul McCartney playing base gutiar)... so, as a result, when the Beatles music library fell into legal limbo in 75, any artist who'd utilized a Beatle, had to pull those versions from the market. - It didn't get resolved until 1991.

  • @BeHappy2day Actually, it was recorded in mid-1968, during the recording of the White Album!! Awesome version, thanx for sharing.

  • Wow! Never heard this version. This bubbled under in '69, re-released in '70 and only charted #67. I didn't know he re-recorded it and that's the one I've always known. Interestingly, Crystal Mansion covered this in '70 and I always wondered about the way they arranged it. And now it all makes sense-- their version sounds very much like this first one.

  • this certainly has that Beatlesque sound to it.....I can hear the McCartney influence in this.....

  • Believe or not, it's Paul McCartney who play Bass on this song.

  • I was born on the coast and grew up in the mountains (Asheville). It's all home. Relatives from here to there. Oh and I don't want to EVER take another class trip to Biltmore House. However, I do miss the Winky Bars from Biltmore Dairies. I've been living in Atlanta most of my adult life but I would sell my soul for the mountains of NC.

  • I LIVE IN ASHEVILLE!!!!!!

  • COOL ...... Yes, You're fortunate to live there.

  • @TheSargeJ weaverville!

  • Thank you sooooo much for sharing such heart-felt sentiments with me. -- I'd love to hear more. Please feel free to e-mail me via YouTube's message feature. -- Until then, have a wonderful week.

  • I have lived in North Carolina all of my life and it is a beautiful place to live.

  • Beautiful state.

  • North Carolina is prettier than South Carolina. The only cities that are really pretty in South Carolina are here in Charleston & some what Columbia.

  • Thanks for the lovely comment. -- And sorry it's taken me 2 months to respond to your insightful remarks, but lately I've been so busy enjoying life, that I often don't log onto the web for days (or weeks) at a time. -- Oh, I checked out your channel page... very nice!!!! However, I'm confused ?? Are you in Charleston SC?? Or Compton CA?? Please send me a regular YouTube E-mail message so we can have a fun talk. -- I lived in Los Angeles up until 2005 til I moved to FLA., so I know L.A. well.

  • I was born near compton & grew up in the La area.I live in Charleston sc.

  • We have history. Y'all have Tobacco.

  • Where do you live?

  • yeah so what charlotte's a big city and its better then rural sc

  • Our women are more beautiful.

  • Im gay so that doesnt bother me

  • LOL Touche

  • Simply breathtaking

  • (ha-ha).... Yes, simply breath-taking... Just Like YOU.

  • These are all beautiful photos.

  • Thank you so much Lauren.... You're such a special lady. I appreciate your comments and opinions more than words can express.

  • I agree with cmc2454. This version of the song is definitely the best, IMHO. I think it must be Paul McCartney's production of it, along with the strings and female back-up vocals, that give this original version the momentum it deserves.

  • I love James Taylor.

    Pretty pictures.

  • this version, the original on his first album, is still the best version of this song. i dont understand why people prefer the other version. same with "something in the way she moves" for that matter.

  • There are clearly female backing vocals on this track. "sallygal7" (below) states that it is Linda McCartney. Credits for this particular song says the backing vocals are J.T. and Peter Asher. I can find no evidence that it is Linda. Recorded in London from July to Oct. 1968. Some people say George Harrison was also on this album, there again no credits show Linda or George.

"Carolina" is the only song Paul was on. I have heard that Paul "discovered" James. Who are the mystery vocalist???

  • I think the backing vocals may be sped up a little (actually...a lot). That's why it sounds like Linda a bit. It does "sound" similar to the backing vocals on McCartney's Ram album.

  • Someone may have already mentioned it but, James was the first non-Beatle to record on the Apple lable. I am very fortunate to have an original copy. If anybody knows how many original pressings were made I would love to know. James' Apple association was very short lived with this being his first and only Apple record.

  • Thank you.... I was not aware that James was the first non-beatle to be recorded on the Apple label.

  • Nice to hear the original version of this song. That's Linda McCartney singing backups along with Peter Asher and that's Paul McCartney on bass! This was back in 1968 or 1969 when JT was an artist on Apple Records. This is my favorite version of this song, it's great to hear it again.

  • Wow !!!! -- I knew Paul McCartney was playing bass guitar, but I had no idea Linda was singing backups along with Peter Asher. Thank you sooooo much Sally. I deeply appreciate your enlightening comment. Of course this is my favorite version also. -- I wonder if you're aware of the tangled legal history of this original version, and why it completly disappeared from the market from 1974 to 1991. -- I'll send you a YouTube e-mail later today with the full story. You'll find it fascinating.

  • I have been from the mountains to the coast and everywhere inbetween what a great state and a marvelous video..if you get a chance check out my first attempt. I still live in Carolina...there is no where else.

    Barbara

  • I grew up on James Taylor.

I love him so much. Also, being born in North Carolina doesn't hurt my feelings for it either!

    <3

  • Thank you dearly for your thoughts about this song. This was the original version, and there's an awesome history behind this version, which might interest you. --- I sent you an email, so check your YouTube inbox.

  • THANKS SO MUCH for uploading this particular version of "Carolina In My Mind." I have been searching in the past to download the music file but could never find this particular stringed version. It think it was the radio-edit version that got airplay in 1970. The strings really elevate the uplifting mood to the song. They give this song the treatment it deserves. Thanks again.

  • You're very welcome. It's my pleasure indeed. I know exactly how much this version means to you. -- I'm going to send you a regular YouTube email in a few minutes. There's a rich history about this version which would interest you, so keep an eye on your YouTube inbox .... in about 20 minutes.

  • Ooo I love this version of the song too Kevin~ Yep this album was on the Apple label:) I have it:) I have a big album collection:)

  • This is great. Did you take all of the photographs? Also, which program did you use to put the video together?

  • Love you Paige.... Thanks for caring. --- The pics were taken on just 3 occasions --- a trip to the mountains, a trip the the beach, and a trip to the countryside, plus a few miscellaneous shots. All I have is plain ol' basic Windows Moviemaker which comes with your computer. It's awesome, once you get the hang if it... it's got special effects, title graphics, fades, soundtrack mixing and everything. -- Please keep in touch.

  • :-) So glad you are getting into the swing of creating vids.

Wonderful pictures with a great song.

    "I can see the sunshine"

  • Thanks Katrina.... Somehow I suspect that you (being the quintessential poetress that you are) can appreciate every nuance of this beautiful song. ---- Love and hugs to you, my friend

  • Very good song and pictures just great everything!

  • Thanks... I checked out your channel page... I see you're a James Taylor aficionado. This was the ORIGINAL version. (the actual HIT)... but due to legal battles involving ownership of all music rights relating to any Beatles participation (McCartney plays base guitar in this song), this version got tied up in court for almost 20 years, and James Taylor was forced to record a different version for his greatest hits albums. The later version was not as good.

  • i love the piks!

  • Gosh.... You're the artistic master when it comes to slide-shows, so I'm honored and humbled by your comment. Thanks Lizzy. -- Oh... Did you happen to notice that I sneaked in a pic of me and my 2 friends ??? - (right about at footage timer mark 00:50)....

  • this is very beautiful tom

  • I appreciate your feedback more than you could imagine. Your opinions and your input are very important to me.

  • And ''Wow'' right back to you Kim..... (Whew !!!!) --- Coming from someone as talented as you, that is a meaningful compliment indeed. You have filled my humble world with a deep and new-felt pride. -- Thank you for being the very first person to comment on my labor of love.
