Great job! Lots to cover and you did it very well... My only request would be to break down some of the strumming pattern a bit... i.e. you play the interlude very well, and showing that pattern on the A and BMinor in more detail would be great! Find it hard to achieve the same "rhythm" which you render really well...
I hate to pick nits, and your are obviously a very good guitar player, but i would watch some more videos of him because when you say "he does this or he plays it like this"...he doesn't. You are using much different fingering than he does and even some of the notes are wrong...just saying check out the radio city video you can see pretty clearly how he plays it. If it's the way you feel comfortable playing it then wonderful but i think its misleading when you say "he does this"
Thank you for the video! Very easy to follow. Question for you -- I'm relatively new to guitar, and I can follow every part of your video (with a lot of practice) except one technique: I can't figure out how to get the muting sound on the strings that you seamlessly play throughout (and the song requires). Even right at the beginning... you strum the D chord a couple times, there's a quick mute strum, then after 4 - 2 you do it again, etc. What is the technique to do that? THANKS!!
so, the way that I do muted strums for this song is to simply leave my fingers in the chord shape but to slacken them so that I can get a couple muted strums before continuing with the progression. After the 4-2 note sequence (on A), I lay the index finger flat for a moment for a couple more muted strums. The CORRECT way to do it, I'm told, is to mute the strings with your pick hand palm. I personally find that hard to do and maintain rhythm but it's more versatile if you can learn that way.
Excellent instructional video. Thank you for teaching me this song! I do question the C# minor around 6:30 - 6:40. It just doesn't sound right. I'll have to listen to the original again, but right now an A Major is sounding better in it's place.
so, I think the full-chord sequence I play at ~6:30 is supposed to emulate the same chords as pattern two of the jam sequence (the one that starts on 10e/11g). the second chord in that sequence (9 on low E and 9 G) is a C# minor. Amajor is one of the chords in the same sequence (the last one) so you should be in the same key either way - for that reason, I don't think either chord will sound wrong but based on the acoustic versions of LIOG, I think it's the C#minor
Great job-- stumbled on your video today looking for the bridge progression, and you laid it out perfectly. Has always been my favorite too, with Red Rocks and Leroi's horn my favorite recorded version. Thanks for putting the time into making the video
Great help friend. Learned the first parts a while ago but was looking for the chords for the interlude band jam part and remembered watching your video a few months ago. Found it and I'm sure I'll be able to play it tomorrow after watching your lesson. thanks.
@TheTMP2 Hi. I'm not one of those losers who goes on Youtube to antagonize people, so don't get me wrong. BUT, this guy has taken time to post a video lesson to help and teach us. If you are not happy with it, move on. To say, U suck at explaining it" is quite rude and ungrateful. I've noticed that some people on Youtube have this self entitled attitude, like they DESERVE something. Nobody deserves a free lesson. Everybody is LUCKY to be getting it. Say "Thank You." Good luck with your playing.
thanks for the reply man - very well said. even though they are few and far between, i must say it never ceases to surprise me when people take the time to tell me that the video sucks as if i work for them. of course, i generally don't take the time to respond but i do appreciate it when an anonymous user defends those that upload free lessons
hey man if you could let me know what he plays when you say its like a broken e minor or something i cant figure it out lol but if you could i really am trying to learn the whole song and this is the best video i have found man so thanks and let me know
I think the chord your asking about is as follows (the chord that ends the verse progression before he resets) is: muted high e, open b, 4th fret g, 2nd freg d
dude i know you go to wake forest and i was wondering if you went to the recent dmb concert in north carolina. i went and this song was freakin awesome especially at the end when the violin player was goin at it.
hey dude nice tutorial!! I did have one question though..i'm not too good with strumming patterns yet, but I was confused at the strumming patterns for the slower solo part near the end of the song that dave plays??
well, i'm not great at describing strum patters but here goes. typical dave, he focuses on the base note of the chord with a down stroke first. In the simplest possible way to play it, it's down-up-up-down-up-up-down (and repeat for each new chord). concentrate on starting each new chord with a down-stroke on the base note, then use up strokes (skipping the down stroke in the middle) in between. hope that helps. you can get more complicated with it after you get that down
This is my favorite DM song too. I learned to play it from your video. Awesome job!
One question - it doesn't look like you mute either the A or D string during the progression... but I find my A and D strings ring like crazy and become a bit overwhelming... do you ever get that issue?
yeah, short answer on that one is that i definitely experience the issue here and there. it has to be picked very cleanly in order to avoid it because of how quickly he moves from quickly swiped muted strokes to playing notes.
Good Job Bud... I learned to play lie in our graves pretty well bc of your video and now learning Jimi Thing.. I actually have a request.. can you teach Sister..?
Great instructions! You're a good teacher. I don't know how you figure all this stuff out.
I've learned a lot already from you, especially in the Two Step video and how to construct 3-note major/minor chords. That simple lesson is gold! Everyone needs to learn that method.
your an extremety good internet teacher I've learnt alot of DMB songs very easily from u. Thaks a hell of alot!!! Do you teach guitar to other people? if not you should.
thanks for the comments, my friend. i don't currently teach professionally but have thought about it. I'm not sure i'd have the patience to teach basic guitar though - the internet works well for me since i can teach full songs that i already know.
great vid man. i tried lookin at someones written tabs for this and it was terrible, all it had was the first part and said to play that the whole time. but neway good job. i cant wait to get this one down. after trippin' billies lets hope its a piece of cake to learn...
cool man, glad it helped. the version that i play closest to is the radio city live version with tim (most of my vids are patterned after that concert or the luther college concert).
rhyme and reason eh, dono? if you can play that song clean then i think you need to be teaching the lessons and not me... just joking (kind of) but that one is really difficult. I'll get something uploaded when i get a chance. I've gotten a couple other requests that came in first.
Haha Can we be neighbors!! That was great
