To me its showing the adults receiving christmas gifts but showing the adults as kids... portraying them receiving their presents but the reactions are that of children...the excitement the magic and joy that kinda fades as you get older.
Thats just my interpretation of it.
Its saying to you remember the magic of christmas that u felt as a kid!!!
as a child id tell my parents they ruined christmas forever, when theyre trying to sell me an espresso-machine or slippers 10 sizes to big as a present. needless to say the fun of a plain, white mug still needs to be explained to me.
People moan about the recession now, but I remember the dark days of Xmas as prisoner at Abu Ghraib in 2003.
Contrary to my Muslim faith, I was forced to wear a Santa costume with holes in the trousers, leaving both buttocks & genitals exposed. I was then filmed while being made to perform a highly sexualised ‘dance’ for my porn-obsessed captors.
On Xmas Day itself we received a tiny extra amount of food, though I had to watch one of my comrades die during interrogation that afternoon.
@superfreak150 Oh dear...another person who does not understand irony! - but I suppose at 16 you still have plenty of time to learn (unless you are American of course, in which case you won't). BTW - "your" should have been spelled "you're" in your reply. It is a contraction for "you are". "Your" is possessive, as in "your lack of sophistication or understanding of ironic humour is obvious".
@lucreziia100 stop playing the race card It gets annoying after a while .The white kids at 0:47 got a cup(not a fantastic Christmas present either ) so grow up and stop seeing racism in everything that moves
@mir2k9 Blimey - not again! To all and sundry (most especially those of tender years who seem to not understand such things): My comment on the Lewis ad where the black kid only got slippers was meant to be "ironic". I was actually "taking the mic" / "sending up" the kind of person you accuse me of being - these idiots who see racism in everything. Got that? End of story/ irate, insulting complaints... But why did I bother? I should have known better!
I am best friends with two of these boys big sister - THIS IS TRUE! (the reason i said that is because i don't want people to think i am a liar when im not i actually do know them)
The head of advertising at John Lewis deserves a payrise! The core of their message is very relevant and meaningful- the key is in its simplicity. They realise it is not the product which provides the real happiness, but the owners individual association to it and the emotions it reveals within them- very, very, clever

Just finished watching episode one of the documentary the BBC did. I hope John Lewis survive the economic downturn with their "moderate, conservative" approach. It makes a nice, refreshing change to the type of wild, rampant, capitalist expansionism of CEOs that have killed many larger companies before it. If it maintain its humble, medium-sized operation and doesn't open too many new stores too quickly, it could outlast all the M&Ss and Debenhams over time.

I HATE THIS ADVERT!! im sorry to all those people who find this good but do you have any respect for the original song? its too relaxed and has no passion whatsoever to it!
@TakingMyOwnSide whilst i respect your opinion, you are quite wrong. there's a lot of emotion and meaning in this ad and the cover of the song - look closer
@invertedbellcurve and everyone else who has said something similar, to be perfectly honest, I now agree with you. I'm actually embarrassed about writting that and now think it was pretty immature and stupid. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and we shouldnt persecute someone for having their own opinion, whihc is what i was doing. (And actually, this song has kind of grown on me...:L )
@TakingMyOwnSide I'm with you mate, the first time i heard this version i was disgusted. I admit it is a nice style and does have emotion.... but they should've used a different song. This is an anthem that should be remembered for the original band and passion, not because it advertised a leading high street chain, which you can garuntee will happen in future years.
@TakingMyOwnSide Why do people harp on about the original version of this song? Look at this as a video with musical soundtrack. For that it is hugely appropriate. I found the original version (having only heard it after hearing this) pretty mediocre and dull. I certainly wouldn't want to hear it again. However the words and music have been brought to a a much larger and new audience with this recording and commercial. Isn't that showing a great deal of respect to the original?
Fantastic advert, after all Christmas is for children who believe in Father Christmas and magical times!!! In my opinion you can not get a better advert than "virgin media" for 2009 (that takes it to the next level)!!!

Spot on. Good man! You're the parent, and you're not supposed to really notice the presents (on a conscious level) - just concentrate on the kids, feel the wonder and love that "you" have given them. And let the expensive electronic gadgets slip into your mind unnoticed.
