  • Currently at the minute i own a Epiphone les paul special ii, im thinking about getting a duo sonic as my next guitar, what do you think?

  • @jakeyyvampiree

What do you like to play? What style? The Duo is a great guitar but the pickups have less output than your Les Paul (it's just different).

What do you like to play? I'm sure the Duo Sonic would be great...I'm just asking.

  • @studio1087 I play alot of blues/rock, Stevie ray vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff healey, i like playing that sorta stuff, i also use a fender mustang i amplifier, which sounds great! would you advise this guitar as my next guitar?

  • @jakeyyvampiree

If you like the guitar and if it inspires you to play and be creative every day then go for it. I will suggest that a short scale guitar with lower output pickups may be a bit tame for the styles and artists that you like, A guitar with punchy P90 pickups will play great cleans and it will rock. I did a recent video about the Epiphone 1961 50th Anniversary SG. It costs $399 with a really nice case included. Check that one out before you decide,

  • this is great! good job man

  • @HenrySchecker

Thanks very much - I appreciate it. It's a fun guitar.

  • @studio1087 no problem dude

  • @studio1087 actually one of these babies came in at my local guitar shop. Very good fit and finish and light weight. And yes it is good for grunge I gAve the overdrive a crank to the top and it sounds similar to a mustang so there's everyones answer to "is it good for grunge"

  • @krazy4knives

    Thanks!

  • You can replace the pickups with something more muscular if you want. I'm planning on buying one of these as a project. Put some Dimarzios in it and use it for lead work using the smaller scale.

  • Dang typos.....it sounds good within the context of how any very LOW gain/output single coil sounds with distortion......that's what I meant. I can't type on my iPad. Sorry. I mustbbe pathetically middle aged or something. (-:

  • @studio1087 sorry man but i don't understand you.....why a melody mak....grungers played stuff like this, mustang, jaguar, jazzmaster.the duo sonic p.ups looks like the mustang ones.why do you say they aren't good to grunge punk sound??

  • @dirtyfat - The look of the pickup is irrelevent, the amount of output helps determine the level of crunch, squeal, and wonderful nastiness that the guitar will yield. The Duo Sonic was a tame little student guitar designed in 1956. It's a guitar for playing clean surf music. Think of the Beach Boys. It's not going to get you into a very aggressive tone at all.

I suggested the Melody Maker because it's another retro guitar that has hotter pickups. Watch Joan Jett & The Runaways videos.

  • @dirtyfat the body is routed for humbuckers so you could put one in

  • @dirtyfat......it sounds good with with fuzz or distortion within the context of how anyhow very gain single coil pickup sounds with distortion. It's not a meaty chunky sound, it's a think clanky early 60's sound. I wouldnt use skinny old school single coils for punk; I would want some chunk and squeal and feedback. That's my opinion. I tried to answer the first time. Sorry if I was vague.

  • that is a really comfy feelin squier..never thot id say that!

  • The Blues Junior is now part of the short list of gear that I've bought, sold and bought again!

I sold the Blues Junior in this video when I bought my Princeton.

I found a bargian priced Blues Junior on craigslist and bought it this morning.

I never should have sold that amp. Great little workhorse amp.

  • @studio1087 hi,i want to know if you think is squier duo-sonic good for grunge or punk?does it sound good with fuzz or distortion?

  • @dirtyfat

I would choose something with punchier/higher gain pickups. I have a Melody Maker Reissue that I would play through a crunchy overdrive pedal and get a better punk sound than the Duo-Sonic could. You can find single pickup Melody Makers for $350 and they are real Gibson guitars made in the USA.

If you like old school guitars look at a Melody Maker if you want to rock. Get a black one!

  • @studio1087 they both put out great punk tone. when punk music first surfaced musicians used both types. they used any guitar they could get their hands on.

  • they pair up well, thinking of picking up this guitar soon

  • The neck was nice and the intonation was great right out of the box. No fret sprout. The short scale nature of the neck makes me feel like Superman when I bend notes. It's very easy to play. Nice neck.

  • how was the neck on it right out of the box? nice video! jam on BRO...

  • Chop it up Guitar free!!???

I meant "chop it up GUILT free".

I'm a guy who shouldn't post before his first cup of coffee.

    Sorry man.

    John

  • You could change the tone with hotter pickups but personally I couldn't hack the guitar apart. It's such a nice copy of a historic guitar. If you want a hotter guitar you could buy a Telecaster or a Gibson Melody Maker reissue. A Squier Tele would make a great modification platform and you chop it up guitar free. The DuoSonic is too cute. (-:

  • Correction- ok maybe the tone isn't crap (probably great for surf and maybe even some jazzy country styles) but really weak sounding and too simple and twangy. How much of that has to do with the size and weight of the guitar and the tonewoods? Or is it something that could be dramatically altered with an electronics upgrade?

  • So true. Tone is crap but she's gorgeous and as fun to play as anything I've put my hands on. Played one at GC and when the salesmen went to plug me in I was like, uh, that's ok. Lol Why ruin the moment right? She's gettin Fralins anyway. Lol squier knocked it out of the park hear. PERFECT project piece (aside from the basswood maybe) and even more perfect for when and if my 4 yr old wants to learn. Daddy won't have any problem breakin' her in. Lol

  • In all honesty I must agree. The look tugs at my heart but it's not a very dynamic guitar. The orinial models were student guitars. The reissues are true to the humble " student guitar" form. It is what it is. I'll never sell it. It's too cute.

  • i think duo sonic reissue doesnt sound that great, but it is so beautiful

  • Yes I had a Crate V18.

I had the V18 and the Blues Junior.

I did a video with the V18 and an SG near Halloween. There was a mini pumkin sitting on the V18.

The V18 and the Blues Junior are both gone. I got a new Princeton Reissue at a Best Buy for under $600 and then I found a great deal on a Deluxe Reverb Reissue.

It's spooky. I have my two dream amps and I'm middle aged. I could done with amps for life.

    It's really spooky.

    John

  • Dude, did you have a Crate V18 at some point? I think it came with a pumkin!

  • nice playing

  • I have never seen a left handed Duo-Sonic but I've seen many left handed Squiers.

The Squier web site will tell you.

    John

  • is there a left handed Dou Sonic??

  • Gyan111......Wait. I'm not wearing my watch in the video.

    What watch????

I have one watch. It was dad's. Died died and I have a watch now but no dad.

    Cancer sucks by the way.

    Enough about me.

    Back to silly guitar videos......

  • the tropic of cancer, is that the one above or below the equator?

  • The Looper is the single pedal Boss RC-2. If you play a steady measure in a steady tempo, the RC-2 adds the drum beat pefectly. It's very easy but you cannot speed up or slow down as you play. If you can play at a steady tempo and count four beats and step on the pedal the RC-2 makes the rest easy. I had the fancy two-pedal Boss lopper and I sold it. The little RC-2 is a lot easier to goof with. I'm a ham fisted hack and I can work the RC-2. I got mine used. Love it. Thanks.

  • Nice Amp, nice Guitar, nice Watch...

  • Love the demo. Love the Duo-Sonic/Blues Jr. combination...great tone...

I'm curious what you were using to loop and record...that was pretty sweet...it takes me a lot more hand work and time to do what you did seemingly effortlessly...

  • Thanks! It's a neat little guitar. The short scale makes one feel like superman when you bend notes.

The video sounds a bit brittle. It's warm when you're actually next to the amp.

    Thanks,

    John

  • That was a great video. Good little guitar, classy playing, and a great ending :-)

    Great demo
