18-55 mm is the zoom size, but ONLY for FULL SENSOR DLRs, you need to adjust for crop sensor DSLRs, usually multiplying each figure by 1.5. On a full sensor 18mm is quite wide.
You need to look into apertures as well, a lens is not just the zoom, it is also the aperture as well. Plus lens elements are different inside lenses.
@CampbellRiverSports: For sporting events I suggest the Image Stabilized version IS otherwise you would need to use a tripod, have a look at even the 55-250mm IS version.
@i04pbull: Sadly I do not remember the brand of the chair its pretty old now got it about 6 years ago, it is a nice chair has adjustable lumbar support.
@evilshreyas: the Image Stabilized version of 55-250mm is a lot cheaper than the 75-300mm so apart from the zoom that take into consideration coz I feel you need the IS lens if you want to operate these lens without a tripod.

My 2 cents.

@TheMightyHarihar The crop factor is more like 1.6 actually.

@acekingie Actually, it depends on the camera. For Nikon it is 1.6x and for Sony 1.5x.
