I love the villian in the first "Dirty Harry" movie. He reminded me of those "sicko, wacko" kind of guys that I used to see on the news as a kid growing up in the bay area. I thought he almost made the movie myself. The other Dirty Harry films were okay. As far as The Dead Pool being camp, I'm not a big fan of one movie being dark and the sequel being camp. It seems to make everything uneven and then everything and everybody loses credibility with me.
Exactly, and "Harry 4" (being a Death Wish rip off) is a classic Harry flick. Not to mention that the villains here are more memorable than the DW stock gang bangers.
You forgot Bradford Dillman. Also, it's the same actor playing Mustapha that gets the first "are you feeling lucky punk" line. Also isn't he the pimp who kills the girl with drano? Is this guy in 3 movies?
@icingdeath1 if you've seen a lot of clint eastwood movies, you can't help but notice he has a large group of fellow actors he seems to like to work with. i think it's cool that he keeps his friends close. too bad his taste in girl friends lacks foresight however. i see what he saw in sondra locke, but she wasn't quite leading star material.
love the Dirty Harry series i will agree with Edwin the villein in the first is great and very effective for me. I will disagree with all you on Sudden Impact i love the that film in the series. It is campy cheesy and full of one liners but that's the charm as sleazy as it is. for me its like the people the champion Death wish 3 now i love that movie to but whats great about that is the over the top action of it all.
Haven't see the fifth D.H., but I can't disagree with you on the other four. I see Edwin's point about the original over M.F,, but M.F. is still the more enjoyable if inferior film from a technical point of view. Can't see why the D.H series wouldn't be a good topic: all the four films reflected something of their time and its attitudes.
I forgot who coined this phrase but, in the end, the difference between Fascism and Socialism basically boils down to this: Fascism privatizes profits but nationalizes loss; Socialism nationalizes profits and loss. Both see an incredible statist government control over every sector of life however and the fact that Callahan rebels against state bureaucracy makes 'Dirty Harry' very un-Fascistic on its face.
Pretty good discussion all-around. None of the sequels beat the original 'Dirty Harry' for me - but 'Sudden Impact' was the only one that comes close & is easily my favorite of the sequels. In many ways this film feels like the first actual sequel to Dirty Harry because Eastwood brings back the darkness, style, unforgettable scenes, and thoughtful themes that the other sequels didn't have.
Hypocrisy? Come on guys. The US Justice Dept giving guns to Mexican drug runners that ultimately leads to the death of an American Federal Agent would be a great Dirty Harry movie.
how can you guys say 'right wing' and 'fascist' when the guy gets a black chick in dirty harry and an asian chick in magnum force. remember the times and what those types hate yet secretly crave? i was impressed thinking it was a fuck you to the right. i'm with eric and mike as far as favorite goes. the naked babes in mag force were one of the high points in my nookie starved adolescence. keep up the good work lads and double thanks for covering this particular iconic series.
"According to writer John Milius, the reason for the sex scene with the Asian woman "Sunny" is in the script is because Clint Eastwood received many fan letters from Asian women that contained sexual propositions." from IMDB but I think I heard this in an interview too.
The Dead Pool to me seemed like a made for t.v special to be shown in the evening for early to mind teenagers. I seen it when i was 14 and i liked it im 21 now, i seen it like 3 months ago and thought it was a peice of shit but thats what it felt like made for tv special aimed at teenagers.
Fantastic show guys. Love this stuff.

Ooh kay... You do realize that Dead Pool was a self-parody, right?
So, Sudden Impact is sleazy and Death Wish is great. Wait, what?
