  • wont all stars go through a brown dwarf phase when they r forming before enough gas has acumulated to fuse?

  • We classify stars by their mass when they're mature. So while it's true that all stars at some point go through a phase where they're the mass of a brown dwarf (but are still encased in an envelope of natal gas and dust), they're not brown dwarfs because they're not yet fully formed.

  • But, even though obscured by gas and dust, do u think that a brown dwarf may exist with atmospheric movements like jupiter?

    or is the gas and dust gradually getting thicker/denser, the closer to the centre so that the outer atmospher of a brown dwarf would continue into plasma then nothing so that a true dwarf is not infact existing?

  • There's a lot we don't know about what goes on inside the clouds of gas and dust that form stars. It's pretty far outside my field, so I'm not sure what the current models predict, but whatever they do say, there's still a lot of research to be done in that field. Feel like getting a PhD in Astronomy? :)

  • :/ I'm not sure if most of this information in inaccurate because it's old, or just not proven. But Brown Dwarves are not the size of Jupiter, they are anywhere from 15 to 80 times the size of Jupiter. Basically, they're bigger than planets but smaller than stars. People don't actually know how they form (like a star or like a planet), but we're working on it. A friend of mine is actually working on a project about this right now.

  • You're confusing size and mass. Brown dwarfs are comparable in *size* to Jupiter, but they're much more massive (and, as a result, much more dense).

  • No no no no no. Brown dwarfs cannot be "Burned out stars", they have constant amounts of lithium in their spectra (which would be long gone if they had been stars) and they never managed to fuse hydrogen.

    And that's true, I was confusing size and mass. I apologize for my loose use of the words "bigger and "smaller".

  • UM seems to me that a Brown dwarf has characteristics of both a star and a planet.Maybe Simply the Brown Dwarf was suppose to be a star then ended up like a planet because of its size its size did not allow the Brown Dwarf to become a star This is just one idea out of many I have about the Brown Dwarf.

  • A Brown Dwarf is a star that does not have enough mass to undergo hydrogen fusion. They are defined to be 0.1 (or 1/10) the mass of our Sun.  As time goes by, they continue to grow cooler and cooler.

  • brown dwarfs are stars that didnt have enough mass to form. there usually found in sigular star systems. in a binary system both stars formed. telling us there was enough mater to form doubles. in singular stars. the binary star either didnt form or did begin formation. but there wasnt enough mass. jupiter can easily be classed as a cooled brown dwarf. a red dwarf is a normal star but its very small. therefore is classed as a dwarf. about 80x the mass of jupiter.

  • A brown dwarf is basically a huge gas giant with enough mass to create a small dwarf star but never became because they never underwent any nuclear fusion. Another thing i lik about these guys is that it rains iron...about the size of golfballs!

  • A red dwarf is a perfectly normal star that's bigger than a brown dwarf -- big enough to star nuclear fusion -- but significantly smaller and cooler than the Sun.
