Colin McGinn seems weary and uninterested in what the other participants have to say, as if their intellectual inferiority is a tax on his patience, and then when he does speak what he says is specualtive and inconsequential. A very poor example of a philosopher.
everything we create is alive, everything we can see around us evolves, small or big, it does, in one way or another. We are part of nature, so what we create is also, in a way, party of nature.
I'm surprised the other guys didn't hit this Pollack person in the face. His argument about synthetic life being "unreal" just because natural life is more complex right now, right here, on Earth, is ridiculously unscientific. He also keeps continuously stressing the fact that we haven't found life outside Earth as of yet, and that life is unique to Earth in the whole wide Universe.
All of these assertions are so ridiculously unscientific and reek of religion so bad, it's not even funny.
@caius112 Fair point made. From the beginning of the interview I had my doubts about Mr. Pollack. He's trying to make things physical and simple for himself, whereas it's not that simple at all. Probably his personal limit of imagination in his mind is the reason for his way of thinking. A sorry waste of a brain.
We are consciousness. interdimensional beings.we dream ourselves into this physical world, remembering tht we are not solid but mere holograms of our consciousness. keep trying to convince me im a monkey , not going to happen. goodluck tho. sorry for bad grammar.
know what else is crazy?.... that a bunch of dudes wrote 1 book about 1 dude and everything they wrote... the word of god. no shit... and people follow it like their lives depend on it!
I agree with the definition of life given by James P. Ferris... and after minute 13 of the round table, I want to slap Colin McGinn around the place, how can we try to understand an origin of something without defining what we are looking for? His psychological wishy-washy mysticism threatens to be so vague an unconcise as to turning everything the color beige.
Use of language, concepts, even scientific observations, always reduces existence. Who's to say consciousness isn't actually infused into everything, including material matter? The truth is, we don't really know much, even though we like to feel that we do. If we provide a context, things seem to function, practically speaking, in what we call "reality," to at least some consistent degree. But all contexts are imagined things, couldn't we say?
All my life I have observed human beings, in a vast variety of ways, trying to define these questions. But very rarely do we acknowledge there is FAR more we don't know than we do. Say the Big Bang is a bowl, and water swirling in that bowl is all we know and can ever know of existence. Can we see before the Big Bang, or in this analogy, Beyond The Bowl? All of human knowledge, as well, could easily be only the tiniest specks of dust in existence, or the most bizarre twistings of simulacras...

Im only about 40 minutes into this but am a little surprised how little attention is paid to Mcginn's discussion of the nature of consciousness. Its a perplexing issues and its too bad there were no scientists on the panel more willing to talk about it in more detail. Cognitive-neuroscience is a facinating area and consciounsness is the holy grail of neuroscience. ANyway, good discussion nonetheless. Although the big guy with glasses is already starting to annoy me.
there is a dycotomie that permates this entire conversation and its that man has escaped natural selection they speak of our species as if its apart from nature. this is a fallacy everything human beings have done is natural in the sincerest sense of the word

@bloodcell9 If not for the content of the discussion, then for showing how a real discussion is conducted. Cause OMG do the religious need to learn that.
well thats a first.

good question
id go with
Self Awareness and
Personality
self aware should be obvious
personality, we are all made up of the same parts yet we all have different personalities, even siblings from the same home and upbringing.
Thats my answer, im sure everyones would be different

Cool psuedo-mystical gibberish, bro. Yeah "dreamin' ourselves into consciousness interdimensionally..." Pass that spliff, dude!
Real science demonstrates that you have a mutual common ancestor with monkeys, and, indeed, with all of life on earth.
Go get a library card. Id on't know if you heard but they're free! And they have good grammar books there too I heard!

Finally something interesting on Youtube. god, (god not capitalized) is the anti-thesis of reason. I took the red pill the other day (pot).

If the gentlemen who proposes that consciousness only arises from "social" behavior is correct then he is COMPLETELY unconscious! haha, funny stuff.

We cant get a sensation of consciousness in its origins because there is no explanation for the explanation of consciousness.
This is as if we are to ask, what is atomistic deterrents.
