@Aepriz Yea, once you've beaten the game once things get much easier. I played through this again a few weeks back and had very little trouble. The tough boss my first playthrough was the maneaters.

@IcyDemon357 I can beat it in less then 3 right now :) (There also some Japanese guy who uploaded his total playtrough, starting from new game. It took him 54 minutes and a couple of seconds, now that's insane!)

This game is hard because the dev set it to "hard" and every mobs hit cost 3x as much damage as normal mob in other rpg. So just think hard as way the game punish you for being a noob at the beginning and they battle harden you through failures.
Its like a harsh penalty system for dying because you either suck or to stupid to understand hack and slash game like this in Japan. :D
this game is so fun i always play with my cousin all the time and get shit scared when a black phantom arrives one time in tower of latria we hid in a cell with graverobber ring on for 20 min only to find that he was fucking easy and beat his ass quick good review to bad the servers are closing sometimes 2012
@MrBeauJango well yeah... and to add injury to insult..... if you cannot progress the game through the normal setting, (ie you die too many times)... they give a ninja dog mode....and constantly remind you that you could not complete the game in the normal difficulty setting.... have you not played it???

The bosses are actually explained a lot, it's just harder to learn about them because it requires a lot of exploring and finding key NPCs during black and white world events.

I don't think you are right when you say the game is HARD. It's challenging, that's for sure, but if you know how to play the game it's not hard at all. You just need to approach the game in a certain way and block a lot, that's preety much it.
@ZeitgeistReview Actually, I would say it was the opposite for me. When you play the game on NG+ you have more focus on the online play of the game and the game is harder. I know that for many, like yourself, the game was hard at the beginning mainly because they tried to play the game like a regular action game when it's clearly not. Nice review though :)
@ZeitgeistReview Idk, when I started playing i thought it was a bit easier (well, bit less ridiculously hard) than everyone made it sound. I only thought it was hard when the black phantoms show up. I couldn't take three steps in an area before a huge guy with two surf-board sized swords decided to kill me. Admittedly, i never beat the game, but i haven't been able to play in at least 6 months. @AosaBid It's more unforgiving than difficult. In reality, most enemies have simplistic and at times stupid A.I. Most of it boils down to determination. If you stick with it, learn the patterns of enemies, and you'll pull through. The time investment is really worth it. It is truly one of, if not THE best RPGs I have ever played, and I can't wait for Dark Souls this October.

It's funny that it took SOOOOO long for a game like Demon's Souls to come around. And i don't mean difficulty wise. Yes.... Ninja Gaiden can be quite hard... but only if you actually choose to play on said hard difficulty. Even then, a lot of stuff doesn't matter. Demon's Souls is the first game i've ever heard/played where pretty much every derogatory term you can think of is said with LOVE for the game. It's so hard, you LOATHE playing it, but you're too hooked to stop.
this game is actually really easy, i borrowed it from a friend who couldn't get past the first lvl cuz it was too frustrating, managed to beat it in about 20hrs and went thru the 2nd play-thru even faster. all in all this is a great game and will be challenging to most ppl. only thing i didn't like was the lack of a pause button, gotta love it when u have to take a piss before entering the boss fight and come back to u being killed by a dark phantom
i think this is my kind of game because i always play games on the highest diffulty level because when you beat the game it feels so much worthy and it doesnt feel cheap you feel so much more attach to a game when you have trouble along the way you really feel like you get better the more you keep on dying the smarter and better you get
the thing i loved about this game was that every boss had a catch, like that giant boss with the blue sword it took me 5 tries to realize he was blind. to me the easiest boss was the armored spider just shoot arrows at it from far away. the worst thing that happen was that u get webbed
I believe you when you say you enjoyed this game, but claiming that it was frustrating, yet fun, is directly contradicting. A game cannot be both. There is absolutely no fun in frustration.

@ZeitgeistReview correct me if i'm wrong, but the reason I found the game so awesomely fun and frustrating at the same time was because once i had completed a difficult part of a level i was really happy and relieved, it was this constant pressure and relief that made the game so much fun. :)
@MFauli I know what you're saying but i found this game frustrating where i wanted to smash my controller, however i can't deny it's a good game, once i got the hang of it it was fairly easy. First 2hrs of playing this i was like why did i buy this...got better the more i got used to it.

Its the type of game when u put in effort it isnt difficult at all. Unlike say super meat boy where u cant grind or anything it just takes skill to finish it. Super meat boy is certainly far more difficult than demons souls, try that if i want frustration ;/
The game isn't difficult at all, i can't remember the world, 3-1 i think? IF you grind the start of that world for a wee while (no more than an hour) your strong enough to not really feel the game is that hard. When i was on my 3rd playthrough i was finishing my next 5 or so playthroughs in a few hours just killing most things in one hit, even that big muddy boss in the second last word i do beileve dying nearly one hit with the fire spell if what i cant remember the name

Just look at your review. The easiest way to get your body back in my opinion is the blue stone because then you can know the stage better AND get your body back. It is weird that you didn't mention it
The first level is the hardest and then it gets somewhat manageable once you get the hang of it. I died on the first level like 40 times before I beat it and every level after that like 10-20.
@foxvbowser Only while you learn to play. Once you learn what you're doing, it gets better. I started a new game and raped face all the way through it the second time. Note, I did not play N+ mode or whatever it's called where the difficulty ramps up.
@fpsisfun There's still a few people lurking demons souls but not as many as there once was. The most action is in the Shrine of storms area around level 120.
I must say, Demon's Souls isn,t that hard. Well, of course it's not easy to learn every enemies' moves, but once you know them, and how to dodge and counter attack, this game can be beat only by staying level 1 (there's a video that prove my point, just type Lvl 1 demon's souls walkthrough)
@MystikalQC Exactly see most vets on this game understand that it's only a matter of memorization and timing in sync with enemy animations to successfully execute an invulnerability frame.
@Mog087 Also If you played the ninja gaiden's in the 80's were talking serious hard. I'm probably not one to talk though as I need to sometimes realize I have been playing games and doing the hardest things in them since the 80's so what I consider easy may be impossible to others. I forget there are newcomers and yes I can see to non hardcore gamers this game would kick their butt multiple times.
@Mog087 Well DMC3 does penalize you for dying if you're going for SS ranks it will result in a lower rank. I see you're point however there are levels. However Demons souls is sort of level based to though as when you beat a boss you can continue from there. I'm just bringing up DMC3 because it was a game that was remade into a special edition for being too hard. Also Ninja gaiden 2 on master ninja is just insane even with checkpoints as everything can practically 1 hit kill you.
Beat ninja gaiden 2 on master ninja and beat devil may cry 3 on dante must die getting all S ranks then come back and tell me demons souls still makes you feel like a man. Also I love demons souls so don't get me wrong I just don't think it's that hard. Yes that is MY opinion.
@KainSarafan that's because i really enjoyed playing the series, and from what i have seen from Demon Souls it has some gameplay similarities with some games from the Legacy of Kain, those reaver wraiths from Soul Reaver 2 are in Demon Souls to :)
Picked this up 2day because of this review. Other wise I would not pick it up seeing as I usually play games on easy or medium difficulty settings. I got home and it took me 5 yes 5 hours to complete the first mission (not counting the tutorial) and I loved every min of it, but it's just to frustrating! I'd give it 8 maybe 9 out of 10 but if u could change the difficultly to an easier setting it would be 10!!!
@123EllDude If you manage to beat the game you will start from the beginning and the game will be (around) 43% harder. You are starting on the lowest difficulty.
@knwitham What's unfortunate is that when I played, there was a pure white event going on for a few weeks, so no zones ever left pure white, so I didn't experience anything but that.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Demon's Souls is one of my top 5 games this generation. 300+ hours, and a legit platinum and loved every second of it. And as Zeitgeist stated, Demon's Souls is highly recommend! :D

Just wanted to let you know, with regards to the story, although very little of it is actually outright explained in the game, if you go about talking to every character and examining all of the items you find and worlds you visit, you actually find out quite a bit about the world and the characters that inhabit it.
Some guy put it all together after going through the game and gathering all of the info he could.

@Hailtothegun That's partially my point. While all of the info is there, you have to look for it and work at it to actually understand it. It's not presented to you in a manor that helps you understand. So while there may actually be a good story buried in there, it's exactly that, buried in there.
the FREAKING FLAME LURKER is easily the most brokenly hard boss i have ever fought in games like this. I END UP using a freaking pillar glitch to kill it, its so embarasing.
@justmedawg ohhhhh ive tried that. its not so easy to get some people down there, in the dragons den. serioulsy ive found 1 soul sign every...what 3 tries? and even then it barely lasts.
I just lost about 20 hours of my life while being ganked by a black phantom who materialized right next to me in Boletarian Palace. I was SLevel 29 and he broke my entire gear with a couple of swings from his spear. Now all my gear requires 3000 souls to fix each AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. Oh yeah i kind of have to delete my char now and start over with a new one but damn will i be prepared next time.

Its the type of game when u put in effort it isnt difficult at all. Unlike say super meat boy where u cant grind or anything it just takes skill to finish it. Super meat boy is certainly far more difficult than demons souls, try that if i want frustration ;/

The game isn't difficult at all, i can't remember the world, 3-1 i think? IF you grind the start of that world for a wee while (no more than an hour) your strong enough to not really feel the game is that hard. When i was on my 3rd playthrough i was finishing my next 5 or so playthroughs in a few hours just killing most things in one hit, even that big muddy boss in the second last word i do beileve dying nearly one hit with the fire spell if what i cant remember the name

this game remind me of a game i played on PS2 i forget the name of it,it was a turn base game like Final fantasy,that game prove to me that i wasn't shit at the time,it was the hardest game i ever played,but this game right here Demon's Souls,you really have to be on a level to play it,dude is right this is not a game for everyone.

The first level is the hardest and then it gets somewhat manageable once you get the hang of it. I died on the first level like 40 times before I beat it and every level after that like 10-20.

and you can kill Vanguard in tutorial but then the Dragon God kills you in cutsene

@foxvbowser Only while you learn to play. Once you learn what you're doing, it gets better. I started a new game and raped face all the way through it the second time. Note, I did not play N+ mode or whatever it's called where the difficulty ramps up.

I must say, Demon's Souls isn,t that hard. Well, of course it's not easy to learn every enemies' moves, but once you know them, and how to dodge and counter attack, this game can be beat only by staying level 1 (there's a video that prove my point, just type Lvl 1 demon's souls walkthrough)

@Mog087 Also If you played the ninja gaiden's in the 80's were talking serious hard. I'm probably not one to talk though as I need to sometimes realize I have been playing games and doing the hardest things in them since the 80's so what I consider easy may be impossible to others. I forget there are newcomers and yes I can see to non hardcore gamers this game would kick their butt multiple times.

@Mog087 Well DMC3 does penalize you for dying if you're going for SS ranks it will result in a lower rank. I see you're point however there are levels. However Demons souls is sort of level based to though as when you beat a boss you can continue from there. I'm just bringing up DMC3 because it was a game that was remade into a special edition for being too hard. Also Ninja gaiden 2 on master ninja is just insane even with checkpoints as everything can practically 1 hit kill you.

@KainSarafan that's because i really enjoyed playing the series, and from what i have seen from Demon Souls it has some gameplay similarities with some games from the Legacy of Kain, those reaver wraiths from Soul Reaver 2 are in Demon Souls to :)

Picked this up 2day because of this review. Other wise I would not pick it up seeing as I usually play games on easy or medium difficulty settings. I got home and it took me 5 yes 5 hours to complete the first mission (not counting the tutorial) and I loved every min of it, but it's just to frustrating! I'd give it 8 maybe 9 out of 10 but if u could change the difficultly to an easier setting it would be 10!!!

@123EllDude If you manage to beat the game you will start from the beginning and the game will be (around) 43% harder. You are starting on the lowest difficulty.

The trick with this game is to kill yourself in the nexus before you enter a zone. That way, you will obtain Pure White World Tendancy alot easier.

@knwitham What's unfortunate is that when I played, there was a pure white event going on for a few weeks, so no zones ever left pure white, so I didn't experience anything but that.

Hey, great review. Just wanted to let you know, with regards to the story, although very little of it is actually outright explained in the game, if you go about talking to every character and examining all of the items you find and worlds you visit, you actually find out quite a bit about the world and the characters that inhabit it.
Some guy put it all together after going through the game and gathering all of the info he could.

@Hailtothegun That's partially my point. While all of the info is there, you have to look for it and work at it to actually understand it. It's not presented to you in a manor that helps you understand. So while there may actually be a good story buried in there, it's exactly that, buried in there.

I just lost about 20 hours of my life while being ganked by a black phantom who materialized right next to me in Boletarian Palace. I was SLevel 29 and he broke my entire gear with a couple of swings from his spear. Now all my gear requires 3000 souls to fix each AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. Oh yeah i kind of have to delete my char now and start over with a new one but damn will i be prepared next time.
