I'm so glad people are keeping Jerry's spirit alive after 16 years. I was born in '95 and as a matter of fact, my name is Liberty. I take real pride in my name. I also take pride in the music I listen to and live by, Grateful Dead.
@bellablue108 It's so funny you should bring that up now. I'm a Zen practitioner and my sensei (who is the real deal) was trying to explain to an intro group how your physicality differs as you become or are enlightened and used the way Jerry played as an example. After, I told him I had many moments of enlightenment at shows, and he responded - "we all did." I miss him so much but so grateful I had that experience when I was young so that I know now to not expect anything less.
Aww man that little wave Jerry does at the end kills me. What an incredible artist/human being. All you a**holes complaining about this or that, I wish I was 10 years older to have had the opportunity to see Jerry play anytime I could. The man was/is a God!!
@rawkus1167 You missed it but you can relive it with the rest of us with hour after hour show after show. The God comment is a little weird though. In the twilight of the grateful dead, there was a group of tour heads called the spinners. They twirled themselves into an altered state and they worshiped Jerry as a God. He was just a man with amazing talent.
@remsleeper Speak what you know my friend. I was a "spinner". Sufi meditation…twirling to Garcia opened the door to strong mystical experiences, allowing focus entirely on the music/internal, to hear every note or nuance, no external distraction. Jerry was far more than an amazing talent….turned multiple thousands of people on to their own light, set the angel in us free. If you didn't listen or see why he did tour after tour on the EC til his death, you kinda missed it. Who isn't God?
Jerry died in detox from heart failure as a result of living bad for 50 years and sleep apnea. He was a drug addict, but his death was a result of 30+ yrs of on and offf active addiction, being overweight, smoking and apnea, which is when you stop breathing while asleep.
Damn I miss that Fat Man! I really hated to see him end on those horrible Chicago show's.... Missed lyrics and repeated lines over and over. I knew something was wrong when a man that sang these songs for 30 years forgot the lyrics. I know this was an encore, anyone know the show? Looks indoors and at the end of a long few weeks for Jerry. Those eye's don't look like the eyes of a pain free man....
Dude your an idiot why dont you try to remember the lyrics to 1000's of songs and while doing so live the life of rock star and on that note a member of the dead . I remember jerks like you complaining after shows ..when you should be grateful to even have been able to witness that slight imperfection you bitch about...I HAVE TO SAY I WISH I COULD HAVE HIM HERE NOW PLAYING OF KEY AND SINGING WHATEVER MOAN HE CHOSE!!!SO IN HIS NAME OND ON HIS HONOR !!FUCK OFF
Jerry liked playing Liberty. It was the only song he smiled while playing the last couple of years when he was still with us.
P.S. the backlash against Day Job was because it was overplyed, not cuz it was a bad song. Loose Lucy used to be a treat, at the end it was "oh no not another Lucy" Help Slip Frank 2/26/77 swing auditorium....best ever
Later day "Touch of Grey". It is too bad they never cut this in the studio, greased some palms at radio, and had another hit record. It could probably still be a hit today with the proper adds around the country. The sheople would eat this tune up!!! We miss you, Jerome John!!!
Not all of the footage is from 1994. The clips of Phil wearing the soccer jacket are from the encore at Soldier Field...but there is also footage from RFK in 1993 with Hornsby playing the accordion.
It brings a tear to watch these 94 performance, Jerry is so frail, you could tell hes not doing well. It is a real shame, but im grateful for the music and the experiences that GD has given me.
Out of all the newer songs by Hunter/Garcia, this and "Days Between" were my faves. I remember being awful concerned in '95, with Jerry being way out of it most of that year--but , I think it was June 6, 1995, Shoreline, Jerry was kickin' ass in the old style! Fabulous Box of Rain, that went into the best "Liberty" I've ever heard, at the end of which, Jerry and Phil had an eye-contact moment, with ear-to-ear grins all 'round. It was sweet. Anybody have the version from that show?
Question: How did Hunter's song, "Keep Your Day JoB" vanish from Grateful Dead stuff. I never hear any1 wanting to hear it, some folks never even heard it! Revive "Day Job" I know fans in 1980's asked the band to discard it from setlist rotation? Why?, such a good tune, witty lyrics,& toe-tappin beat also, Jerry's solo rips!
Hey, Altoonasuks, how's it goin'? Never was aware that there was a backlash to "Keep Your Day Job". I always dug it, just like "Might As Well", and you're right, Jerry's solo rips, as always. Another one I always have loved is "On the Road Again", not to be confused with Willie's song by the same title (LOL). Rock On, bud!
I seen Ratdog in Camden this year. No liberty, but the Jerry songs like Loose Lucy, were awesome! I know what you mean though about Jerry...Legends can't be replaced!
"don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you got til it's gone"-mitchell,J.
anyone got a copy of 'backstage pass'? I think one his early works like 91 or so.. like 28 minutes long. Absolutly stellar audio acoustic of Jerry Band as I recall, Lyle lovitt at red rocks? And crazy edited in dancing pygmys stuff that just flips my lid thinkin about it! I need a miracle..!
Right on Sis. Looked up to the rain-filled Chicago skies with tears in my eyes that day. Weather patterns sometimes seem so fitting. Like the torn curtain in the temple. . . Bah! 50 years to the day of the last(?) nuke used in warfare, while they were called the antidote to the nuke.
This is an extra scene from "View from the Vault" 1 or 2, I can't remember...great song though. I didn't appreciate it at first, but listening to it a few more times and it really grew on me.
Ssags11, you're right. I think I was just referring to the guitars that had names that we all knew so well being built by Irwin. Gibson in the 60's and Stephen Cripes built him one in the 90's were also played, but what else did he play?
Honestly, I love this song and I thought the video wasn't very good. Just cheap old pictures, nothing really of the imagery the song invokes. Ehhh...not impressed Justin, try again.

idk in Box of rain, robert hunter claims that fans asked the song be taken out of concerts
rambleonrose93 2 years ago
thats not true,
fans would actually shout "let phil sing!"
to hear the song
maybe your thinking of till the morning comes, they only played that live 5 times
Leathonf 2 years ago 2
no i know that they shout that for box of rain
i meant that fans asked them to stop playing dont quit your day job. i was referring to the book box of rain which is a collection of his lyrics.
