: before getting down on the shot press the cue shaft firmly down on your bridge hand in the air. Now bring the cue down and aim while keeping that downward pressure with the cue shaft on your bridge hand. Now do a few warm up strokes while keeping that downward pressure. Now aim the cue just a little bit low on the cue ball ""not too far low"" then stroke through the shot with that downward pressure still on your bridge hand and stroke through the same way you would stroke a force follow.
It's OK. I still cause the cue ball to jump from time to time. It just takes a lot of practice--it's cliche, but true. Aim low. If the cue ball is consistently jumping, try aiming slightly below the center of the ball (aka closer to the center of the ball than the felt). Remember to follow through with the cue. Stroke it, don't poke or jab it. A lot of times when I skip the cue ball it's because I'm concentrating too hard on trying to draw it. Hit me up w any more questions.
Really useful tutorial, apparently accidentally causing the cue ball to jump up while attempting to draw is a very common beginner's mistake. I myself make this error very regularly, next time I hit the pool hall I will try these tips. Thanks!
@CodeName...chances are you're probably hitting too low. Your stick may be too high, but it more so depends where you're hitting it. If the cue ball is popping up, it probably means you're hitting felt first, thus scooping the ball up. Try aiming a bit higher and concentrate on FOLLOWING through as level as you can. Once you notice improvement, start aiming lower and lower. REMEMBER: keep your cue and shooting motion level and follow through. Hope that helps
@sprtface@code Also thats why he stresses to keep your cue level. So that you don't scoop. But for me I like to elevate my cue SOMETIME because i get a better feel for the shot.
why is it that when i draw back soemtimes, the ball pops up off the table? am i hitting too low below centre? or is my stick raised up too high from the back?
