you have to be from the USA to make this music and in particular the southern USA - anything else is just imitation, which is flattering enough, but still just imitation. yet another reason why i love this country
Imagine what it must have been like for the crowd! It must have felt like a spaceship had arrived and brought amazing music and talented people from another world. Most had never seen a black person let alone heard any soul records on the radio,TV etc. incredible!
that bass is just fucking spot on and the rest of the band are stunning, with otis singing no one can come near them live!! you can keep modern music youngsters
that bass is just fucking spot on and the rest of the band are stunning with otis singing no one can come near them live!! you can keep modern music youngsters
I have never realize to the full extent, up until now, how much Motown was catered only to a white Audience! Plus it did not managed to achieve what Stax Record had done, in a time when America music was still segregated, which intergrade both Black and White Performers and this all took place in the South.
I caught this tour in London at Billy Walker's Uppercut Club in E7. Booker T and the MG's backed the whole time, and started playing/jamming from 18.00 hrs, before anyone was let in - and played right through to around midnight with just 30 minute break.
I ve been a mod since 1978 am I sick to death of hearing about Northern Soul being the best. It was always Stax and Motown for me. This is the best. Watch all six.
When Motown was just starting up they sent reps down to Willie Mitchell's studio (Hi Records,Al Green and many others) ) in Memphis to try to find out how he got his "sound" because they wanted to duplicate it. They never managed to quite get it down, Atlantic Records sent Wilson Pickett to record at Stax in Memphis because they wanted that "sound" and they couldn't get it in their studio.
Willie Mitchell started recording, arranging and producing here in Memphis in 1959.I should know,I knew the man my entire life, and my family, who has been in "the business" here in Memphis in the mid-50's knew him since he first came here from Mississippi
@drumcollogher I'm a mod too (since 1980) and it was all about the Stax and Motown for me as well, and The Who, the Jam, The Small Faces and The Beatles. There's only a couple of Northern Soul songs I really like.
@drumcollogher (Well, Motown is Northern, technically) but it's all so terriffic. Stax is #1 soul heaven. But don't forget TSOP - The Sound of Philadelphia - Gamble & Huff! Philly Soul is wonderful, too! Philadelphia All Stars & Lou Rawls!
@drumcollogher right on bro went to a northen soul -mod night and like yourself been a mod since i bought all mod cons. and northen soul was mostly 70s songs i had never heard before!! stax and motown is my thing asked the dj to put on an otis redding song "no m8 northen soul only " wtf otis is a fuckin soul legend and at a "mod" night he never had any otis or motown i think with the northen soul crowd its how rare the vinyl is.
I agree Tony Otis rules ...dont forget Otis 70th birthday september 9th ( only a couple of weeks away ) your right about some of the NS ...a few weeks ago I saw a single being sold on ebay and the price was over 1600 dollars and rising ...so I listened to it thinking "shit this must be one I missed ..I couldnt get my head into it so i listened to it again and still couldnt figure out why anyone would even want to play it ....
I can't say enough good things about this, it's just FANTASTIC!!! Do Ya Like Good Music? Find the DVD and BUY it, I did! You won't be disappointed. I would NEVER have known about it, but for You Tube. Anyone who's thinking of banning their stuff from You Tube listening?
The DVD is available at Amazon, Stax/Volt Revue Live In Norway 1967.
The footage is made by the Norwegian Broadcasting Company and the girl in the crowd with the black hood on was later to become Minister of Culture in Norway.
My friend burned me a DVD of this show about 2 years ago and until now I had no idea it was from a tour of Norway. The Mar Keys also performed "Last Night" on the version I have. Do you have that performance as well?
My family had the first jazz record shop in Philly so naturally R&B was hand in glove. And it was my pleasure to see as many of the jazz/R&B concerts as I wanted to as a teenager in the '60s as concert tickets were all sold through stores - no Ticketmaster. We knew what we were getting with James & Motown.
But it was the Stax-Volt performers who usually stole the shows. Why else would Atlantic Records, which had some really decent R&B artists, go such lengths to distribute Stax-Volt?
Just visited the Stax Museum in Memphis yesterday ... had a great time and learned a lot I didn't know. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves Soul!
One of the greatest concerts of all time!

Hey, the Norwegians actually knew how to clap on 2 and 4 by 1967! They really are more progressive than Americans!

Mod was never about northern: I love northern but I also respect motown (proper mod stuff) and Stax/atlantic soul (later mod stuff)
timboexit17 6 months ago
iburl it was england who welcomed northern soul with open arms as they say, the USA though it was rubbish!
DSilius 7 months ago
Did they play "green onions" two times that night? There seems to be two different versions from the same show floating around

If you like Motown but disslike Northern Soul, then you obviously have no clue what Northern Soul is
Kveiteknut 8 months ago 2
I had to look up "Northern Soul" on wiki... seriously?
Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, James Brown...
Soul doesn't need England.
