Love this story. It's so beautiful. It makes me cry to this day. Stuffed animals can be very special. My Cheetah Mtani, that my boyfriend gave me I'm so attached to.
She goes on every trip with me and I cuddle her every night.
I bought this for my son about 25 years ago. We also had a beautiful book and hand puppet. I think I still have them and would love to covert the VCR to a DVD. In a couple of years he could watch it with his daughter. I never tired of watching this with my son. Meryl Streep does the best job of narrating.
Bought my son the book when he was 3 years old. Read it to him all the time. Ten years passed and I still love the story, miss the years when he was so young - greatest event in my life.
It is Meryl. For sure. When she was younger she sometimes had a bit of an English accent. Maybe this was during the time when they shot Plenty. But it's Meryl, you can hear it from her voice. Love her!
I like tgus story soo much i am 13 and i realize what most kids dont that these stuffed animals are actually better than any wound up toy or some play station i love love love the this story soo much and i love the rabbit i wish he was real so i could really love him;)
I like this story a whole lot better, it begins with positive descriptions, not like Super Ted.
"It all started, with an ordinary teddy bear, when he was made- they found something wrong with him, and threw him away like a piece of RUBBISHHH, into an old dark store room. And then, a spotty man- brought him to life with his magic dust. He took him to a magic cloud, where mother nature, gave him special powers! The bear became: SUPERTED!"
Oh God, I'm in tears now. I had the book and a video of this when I was a kid, I watched the hell out of it. Too bad I can't remember which version it is, I can't even remember if it was animated or not... So far I can't find anything that seems familiar on youtube.
I just nostalgia'd hard at this. This was my favorite story as a kid, looking back at it now, it's so damn emotionally intense. Proof that stories for children don't have to be stupid in order for them to be enjoyed.
Reminds me of a ragdoll I've owned all my life, 18 years on and she still sits on the end of my bed even though her dress is tatty and her paint is starting to fade. Come on, almost everyone has a plaything they can't bear to ever truly forget and have made "real." This story makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D
When I was 8 years old, I received a stuffed animal from my grandmother who was two states away from me. She couldn't make it to my birthday so she sent me a green stuffed dinosaur. Not the modern looking dinosaurs that look goofy but almost had a face like the velveteen rabbit. The best kind of toys where they look simple, almost as if they have their own kind personality. He has orange spikes. His name is 'Happy'
i never read/saw this before!! i brought 2 new rabbits today and i thought of "Velvet as a name, then decided to look up the Velveteen Rabbit. i never knew that if you loved a toy enough, then it becomes "real"! aaaw my Teddy reminds me of the Skin Horse in the story :') old and shabby, with his hair rubbed out in places, riddled with holes and only 1 eye.... aaaaw :') (ok i know they don't come alive but i genuinly beleive they have a soul lol)
@vixitrixalina i use to believe they came alive at night!! lol but i also being myself believe they have a soul and wudn't be pleased if i threw them out so i dont xDD and im 11 going on 12 in october xDD oh well they good to talk to =)
The skin horse made me smile and made me think of my little Simba. He is bald in places and his magnet is losing its magnetivity :3 Such a lovely video
does anybody here remember a version of this story where pictures were being drawn as you watched it. i think it was a male narrator and it was released on vhs. im guessing it was from te 80's. i cant find it anywhere online and im starting to think i imagined it lol.
This cartoon as well as Raymond Briggs The Snowman has a special place in my heart where the majic of childhood still dwells deep within, waiting to be poured out and passed on to my son who has yet to see such creations of wonder. I can hardly wait!
Your videos are great and I'm happy to become your newest subscriber! Take a look at mine and consider subscribing to them as well. That way we can keep up with, and enjoy each others' work. thanks a lot! Your friends at TinyGrads.
My son had this book as a gift from his grandparents (with his name replacing that of "the boy"). I used to read it to him, at night, when he was little. I'd get to a certain part of the book and couldn't read any more because I was crying! He's 11 now, and we still talk about my "emotional moments" :-))))
I had the book and cassette when I was a youngin', but I never realized that it was originally a TV production (only selected illustrations made it into the book).
And like others here, I never realized it was Meryl Streep.
This is one of those things, like "Fox and the Hound", that I just can't listen to because they really mess me up inside. I can't hear George Winston's music without my eyes getting wet. That's why I refuse to ever listen to this again. Can't bear it.
Can somebody please tell me which George Winston pieces are featured in this? I found two of them ("Carol of the Bells" and "Thanksgiving"), but I can't seem to find the rest of them.
Only this one. My parents taped it off PBS for me and my sister awhile back. My dad has Winston's "December" CD, and I recognized some from this, but I can't remember which track was which.
I forgot how good these small productions were. XD
When I was little I would watch all sorts of Rabbit Ears stories. I'm in college now, suffering from insomnia, miserable. But I just found this by chance, and here I am, being comforted and nursed, finding myself wanting to sleep, being read a bedtime story, just like when I was little. It's such a nice change of pace. Thanks so much for uploading!
Hey , she's Meryl , she can do anything as far I'm concerned! I never knew it was her reading this story until just recently ,when I had seen her in a few movies!
This aired on PBS in 1986 (with an offer for the movie, book & audiocassette afterwards) followed by "The Snowman" (1982) starring David Bowie. Remember? :)
I used to listen to this on tape with my children (1980's) and every time I heard it, the music found a tender spot deep inside and caused the tears to fall. It recalls for me a time of such innocence in my children's lives.
Hey I have always loved listening to the story when I had it on a cassette tape. I am so glad you posted the video I did'nt even know the was a video made. I also never realized it was meryl streep who did the narration. But, where is the second part of this video? Thanks, Erin
Wow, I have seen most of the Rabbit Ears videos but never this one. But, I love the piano music and Meryl Streep's narration. It's so moving and cute, especially when she did the Velveteen Rabbit. I wish I could see the whole thing of this video because it's really great to watch!
She has an absolutely beautiful voice, and she reads properly unlike half the people I know who read like robots. She has emotion, quite lovely really.
My son's favorite tale, do you by chance have the sequel to this ? This is a classic, we love this movie, I have to buy this CD or DVD again as we lost it. My son also has a similar shabby rabbit that he did not let go for years and years hehe, he was only 5 months old and he carried it around until he was three years old. Children and toys are precious.
when i was little, we didn't have a cd player i got this story on ceset tape for X-mas i loved that story the first time i heard it and every night from then on i would stay up late listening to that story over and over again in till i fell asleep but after i while the tape got old and stopped working i remember i was so sad but now im fourteen and i still love that story it so sad but defently a good story i still know the story by heart word for word
