at everyone, wtf is he supposed to do it was an accident. It was an imperfect situation and mechanics failed. Its not murder. Its just unfortunate. Quit riding this guy
The greater tragedy is that the only reason this segment was being filmed was because that story was comparing our Vietnam soldiers to Nazi's and they had him carrying the two children as a way of trying to save them from the soldiers. Rod Serling would have never endorsed this kind of depiction of american soldiers to nazis.
The great irony was that these filmmakers ended up as the babykillers because they killed two children.
I love that they say that those six years of HIS life must have been horrible. Never mind that morrow is dead along with two children who weren't supposed to be on set and lets just all forget about how the children's parents and morrows family must have felt for those six years. No director should take those risks on set. I don't care if you are some amazing director, you don't do that.
The pilot as well as Landis should have been put in prison. The pilot was aware of the explosions that were to occur relatively close to his copter...and he was aware that there were 1 adult and 2 small kids only 25 feet below him. He had the moral and legal responsibility as the operator of that helicopter to not do the scene. Vick Morrow's head was cut off...as well as 1 of the children being decapitated...the 3rd child was impaled under the water. And this SOB laughs about it....rot in hell .
@clev9980 I strongly agree. I recently had an unfortunate email exchange with the helicopter pilot, Dorcey Wingo. Although, he did not know about the illegal hiring of the two Asian children, he knew the risks to the children because of the disastrous 11:30 trial run. When I told him he did have some culpability in the accident, he told me to never contact him again. The guy has some real issues with taking responsibility for his part in all of this.
I realize this happened years ago, but they talk about it as if it was just "another day on the job" of filming a movie. Three good lives were lost. But the "episode" that Morrow did in that movie was the best damn project in which he could leave this earth for his last one!
As I don't like LANDIS I'm sure he did not wanna ens 2 children's and Vic Morrow's life.Unfortunately this guy(the Pilot)MUST HAD AHELL OF A LIFE AFTER THE CRUSH'It was all because the safety laws weren't strict enough so if anybody going to poin fingers do it at the law makers

this jerk and John Landis should be sitting in prison for killing Vic Morrow and two children, they got away with it when people who rob a grocery store get sent for 10/20 yrs for a robbery!
@g739 In this case there were several people at fault for this horrific accident. Landis called the shots and demanded the chopper to go lower, disregarding common sense which causes accidents!

Nobody pays, but a bunch of millionaires make millions more. It's this sensibility that breeds the likes of O.J., Robert Blake, Phil Spector, etc.
the fuking pilot should have some more fuking respect when talking about the accident he was involved in... wearing a dumb hat and in a dumb surrounding..tacky !!!
@74kennymac Agreed there's something very insulting about this guy talking about the deaths of three people with families that cared for them, while dressed up in a bad wild west outfit. Regardless of if he was responsible or not, he should acknowledge the fact that Vic Morrow's daughters will never see their dad again, and that the parents of the two children who died will never see their kids graduate, get married, or have children. Where does he get the arrogance to do something so tasteless.
This pilot actually said that Vic Morrow was partly to blame for what happened - that he should have looked up to indicate that the helicopter was too close. What bullshit. If you watch the footage (and it's not easy to watch), it happened far too quickly and nothing Vic could have done would have saved those kids or himself. I can't stand it when people try to avoid taking responsibility. Yes it was an accident, but preventable and it was not the fault of the victims. Landis was negligent.
Probably an honest person. But there's always the problem of guilt by association. However, seems like they're both laboring over a sense of responsibility. So, wondering if he had some knowledge of a potential accident? And would it matter? Because Landis's only disclaimer for guilt hinged on the definition of a helicopter accident. And so, at the end, with the death of three people on his hands, the only important thing was about defining what the definition of is..... is!!!
Hollywood is strange. 2 stories: When Michael Cimino made "Heaven's Gate" and put United Artists in bankrupcy he didn't get any good work and until today his career never recovered. A terrible accident happens, 3 people are killed and Landis makes "Coming to America", "Blues Brothers 2000", "Into the Night". If you lose money exectuives don't wanna see your face again. If someone got killed during a filming they say "Accidents happen". Shocking but truth.
This was all the result of an arrogant movie director (John Landis) who let the safety of his actors take second place to the vision he had for his film. Rightfully so, his career has gone downhill ever since. His only major hit after 'The Twilight Zone' was Eddie Murphy's 'Coming To America' and he was hired only after Murphy felt sorry for him and insisted that Paramount Pictures give him the job as a thank you for Landis' casting him in one of his first hits, 'Trading Places'.
It wasn't meant to 'change' anything you said. I was just mentioning the release dates to put Murphy's directorial decision in perspective as to it's proximity to the events on the 'Twilight Zone' set.
Sorry, but could he have picked a more disrespectful setting to casually discuss such a tragedy? Dressed as a cowboy with that saloon music playing? I mean, seriously?!
You know,,,I was sitting here watching this video and thinking the exact same thing!!! Here he is, talking about how HE,,,,directly or indirectly, killed 3 people.....and there are guys dressed like cowboys laughing and joking in the backroud!!!! Talk about disrespect!!!! RIP VIc Morrow!!
He's talking about an event from 25 years prior. You think he should wear death shrouds and walk around moping for the rest of his life? Fuck that. He was asked about the event, not deciding "now" was the "time'. He was simply answering a question.
This was an accident,BUT it was made possible by that scumbag landis.I mean cmon, how about some creativity of your compositions landis? Why couldn't a stuntman holding 2 dummies using a wide shot been used?If the tragedy happened..it would still be a tragedy..but only 1 person would have been killed.THIS is a STUNT MAN'S JOB for fuck sakes!
was the helicoptor even suposed to get that low or close to the pyrotechnics? because if they werent suposed to, then y would they think to use a stuntman?
im amazed how nonchalant he can be about this, i guess he'll always believe he was innocent judging by how he thought morrow should have magically ran away with 2 kids in tow from a falling helicopter.,.im not making that up, he actually said that on the witness stand
"He was in jeopardy from the moment he agreed to do an irresponsibly dangerous shot for a director (John Landis) who had no regard for Vic's safety or for the safety of two illegally hired children. A director, who some crew members say, was out of control and kept screaming at the helicopter pilot over the bull horn, "Fly lower. LOWER!" over the heads of Vic and the children and the massive explosions that were being detonated.
Dick Peabody interviewed Vic Morrow in 1971 about playing soldier together in Combat. Vic mentioned how safe he felt working with A.D. Flowers despite the bombs that were exploding on every show. They never had a serious accident. When Vic died, Dick Peabody took that taped interview and gave to the D.A. who was prosecuting John Landis and Spielberg, hoping it would help to land these two creeps in jail. Three people die and neither one of them spent a day in jail.
Landid showed up at Morrow's funeral at the advice of his attorney completely unvited and put on a big act with two of his stooges and gave a speech. The people at Vic's funeral were horrified. Dick Peabody wrote about it. John Landis is a liar and creep. The people on the set that day were hyped up on cocaine and booze and Vic was already scared about doing the scene and Landid didn't care at all. The pilot was on coke and how he can live with himself is beyong me.
No the problem is is that if you read Dick Peabody's account. Vic Morrow had told him that he was nervous because the safety on the set was horrible as compared to AD Flowers and Combat. Vic said, "I should not be doing these scenes without a stunt double." John Landis should be ashamed of himself, and the pilot who was hyped up on coke and booze. Shame on all of them including Spielberg who lied and said he was not even on the set. I don't see how John Landis can live with himself.
Landis paid a big price for what happened on this set. It was more or less the end of his career as a respected director. He's never received one tenth of the recognition of his contemporaries, Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola or Scorcese.
Of course it was nowhere near the price paid by Vic Morrow or those two kids.
these guys are complete jerks. "That must have been a horrible part of your life." Yeah about 1/1 millionth as horrible as it was for Vic Morrow and those children.
I can't imagine how it must be to accidentally *cause* the death of such people either.
Vic Morrow and the children don't live on with the horrible happenings. That's for the survivors and family to deal with. And also for that helicopter pilot.
I think he deserves some sympathy at least. It was not *his* mistake, but he does have to deal with the tragedy of what happened.
I definately don't see how he's a jerk in any case.
@originalfunkyfry It was an accident that occurred many years ago for him. He did not intend for it to happen. The point of the interview to to extract useful information from a person directly involved with the event. Just because the two don't remain serious and remorseful at all times doesn't qualify them as being jerks.
@originalfunkyfry i'm sure it was horrible for him because he was operating the vehicle that caused their deaths. he probably felt a huge amount of guilt afterward.
The stunt coordinator for the sequence has the final say on saftey.
In a situation like this, the coordinator should have hired stunt doubles and insisted they be used for all sequences which carry a significant risk of harm, injury, or death.
Directors don't put pieces like this together, stunt coordinators do and they're responsible for the lives in the balance.
It's a myth that the director is all-powerful on the set. That's not to say that Landis is completely blameless, however.
jacobtb1, you don't know what you are talking about.. There was no safety. Vic had told Dick Peabody a week before that he was concerned for his safety and that there was little or no regard for safety the way A.D. Flowers was concerned on Combat! There is evidence that much of the crew was stoned on coke and booze. Landis lied through his teeth and three people are dead. Those children were on the set illegally and Spielberg and Landis knew it. Yes he got away with it. Landis is a creep.
Even if that was true 20 years ago (before current safety standards) the guy hired the children illegally, and then made them work in an unsafe way, cause he couldn't do it legally.
It's still true today. Stunt coordinators craft sequences which are beyond the technical understanding of a director.
Like a director of photography, the stunt coordinator attempts to give the director what he wants to see within the limits of saftey, budget, and time.
If the director demands something that is clearly contrary to saftey, the director can and should be denied by the stunt staff. A good stunt staff will also craft an alternative that meets the director's dramatic needs.
Wingo was a Chief Warrant Offier in US Army Aviation and did a tour in Vietnam, the man knows how to pilot a chopper. His flying skills under fire were well documented in 'Nam so if the aircraft could not be controled by Wingo it is doubtful that any aviator could have done any better under the circumstances. There is plenty of blame to go around but pilot error does not enter into the tragic event.
from what i've heard i think it was landis fault... he got all blind with making that scene and ended up killing this guy in a really horrible way to die
Most of the fault goes to Landis. General disregard for safety throughout the shoot. He got away with it for awhile but it was a Chernobly waiting to happen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he never disregarded safety. he didnt "get away" with anything. he was making a movie. how was landis supposed to prevent this tragedy, to not imagine a scene with a helicopter in it? the pyrotechnics fucked up.
The accident happened at around 2:30 in the morning. A few hours earlier, a similar scene was shot where fire and explosions, according to Wingo, came too close to the helicopter (actually singeing Wingo inside the helicopter as he flew over the set). Wingo told people at the time, including Landis, that this was dangerous. Everyone went ahead anyway. Morrow made his choice. The kids didn't. Just because Landis and Wingo were found not guilty doesn't mean they weren't responsible.
@emles2 he was yelling to go lower because he didnt know the explosive/pyrotechnics had placed a explosion where it would take out the tail rotor. he thought they had known the route of the helicopter and placed explosives accordingly.
John Landis should have been responsible in the actors deaths, not the pilot. Though I'm surprised that there was no mention of the dead actors in this, only talk of the aftermath and their 'struggles' in court. The pilot did suggest not using the explosives so close to the helicoptor, but Landis insisted it would be okay. What a sad and a very preventable story! I'm glad the pilot survived it though, I was wondering about that.
I always thought the pyrotech chief was at fault, even though they are typically the most cautious out of anyone. I wasn't there, but from everything I've heard I think it was probably his fault.
he wasn't one to blame, he was involved witht the movie but it truly wasn't his fault so it sucked that he was in a trial that couldn't even be blamed on him
The two children that were killed were not actors. John Landis hired the children illegally and hid them from safety officers on set. He knew he was breaking the law and admitted this in court. If the children had been hired legally, their guardians would never have allowed them to take part in the stunt. I think Landis is directly responsible for their deaths.
Pilot Dorcey Wingo wasn't responsible for the accident. The pyrotechnics supervisor made a mistake. He was supposed to check the position of the chopper after he triggered each explosion. He didn't do this and set off two explosions at once when the chopper was flying overhead. His mistake caused the accident.
This stunt was too dangerous and should never have been attempted. The safety offices on set failed in their duty and are responsible for the accident.
Dear YouTube friends: Director John Landis IS GUILTY. He is totally to blame for the deaths of the great actor Vic Morrow and the child.I can´t understand how he could manage to get free.He must pay for the consequences of his irresponsible acts. But,sorry,I am wrong.I always thought the American justice was fair.Things change, don´t they?Clearly guilt people are at large.Thank you.
(PLEASE PEOPLE STOP KILLING ANIMALS!STOP EATING MEAT!STOP WEARING LEATHER/FUR!ThankyouAdemar07)
After reading both books on the Twilight Zone tragedy, John Landis, helicopter pilot Wingo, and 6-7 other individuals should have been convicted of 3 counts of manslaughter from depraved indifference to human life. I'd pay money to see Vic Morrow's other daughter (not Jennifer) spit in the face of Landis.
The kids are dead. They will never come back. Grow up. Dry your tears. Get over it. It's time to stop blaming people only to make yourself feel better.
To the earlier "Oliver Stone" idiots: I think you're thinking of director John Landis you twits. Know what you're talking 'bout....just cuz internet starts with an "i" doesn't mean idiots are encouraged to apply.
I rented some movie about 15 years ago called Death Scenes. There were 3 all together. One of the movies, I don't remember wich one, has the helicopter crash durring the filming of the Twilight Zone. They show different angles of it. They even show a close up, frame by frame of dismemberment. I have the copy somewhere in my closet.
I have the Playstation 3 and I can't upload videos yet. As soon as I get an update message saying that i can, then I will upload it. I can't even upload music on multiplydotcom which i also been wanting to do.
@Zorn76 To say it was sloppy is an understatement. There were 36 safety violations which were ignored. I exchanged some emails with the helicopter pilot. He sent me his book, Captain Methane. Wingo seems to paint the TZ set as a haven of safety instead of the den of chaos that it was. He doesn't seem to want to really deal with the truth.
There's always a witch-hunt after a helicopter crash. It's a real shame in the way Vic Morrow was killed but getting your tail rotor knocked out at night...? You was just along for the ride.
I feel bad for the guy, If I were involved in something like that I would feel like shit for the rest of my life. Kudos to the dude for not letting the incident get to him. The only person at fault is that fat fuck john landis! Screw him!

He's talking about an event from 25 years prior. You think he should wear death shrouds and walk around moping for the rest of his life? Fuck that. He was asked about the event, not deciding "now" was the "time'. He was simply answering a question.

Dick Peabody wrote the following in 1991
"He was in jeopardy from the moment he agreed to do an irresponsibly dangerous shot for a director (John Landis) who had no regard for Vic's safety or for the safety of two illegally hired children. A director, who some crew members say, was out of control and kept screaming at the helicopter pilot over the bull horn, "Fly lower. LOWER!" over the heads of Vic and the children and the massive explosions that were being detonated.
doggysector 2 years ago
Dick Peabody interviewed Vic Morrow in 1971 about playing soldier together in Combat. Vic mentioned how safe he felt working with A.D. Flowers despite the bombs that were exploding on every show. They never had a serious accident. When Vic died, Dick Peabody took that taped interview and gave to the D.A. who was prosecuting John Landis and Spielberg, hoping it would help to land these two creeps in jail. Three people die and neither one of them spent a day in jail.
doggysector 2 years ago
Landid showed up at Morrow's funeral at the advice of his attorney completely unvited and put on a big act with two of his stooges and gave a speech. The people at Vic's funeral were horrified. Dick Peabody wrote about it. John Landis is a liar and creep. The people on the set that day were hyped up on cocaine and booze and Vic was already scared about doing the scene and Landid didn't care at all. The pilot was on coke and how he can live with himself is beyong me.
doggysector 2 years ago 3
No the problem is is that if you read Dick Peabody's account. Vic Morrow had told him that he was nervous because the safety on the set was horrible as compared to AD Flowers and Combat. Vic said, "I should not be doing these scenes without a stunt double." John Landis should be ashamed of himself, and the pilot who was hyped up on coke and booze. Shame on all of them including Spielberg who lied and said he was not even on the set. I don't see how John Landis can live with himself.
doggysector 2 years ago 2
Landis paid a big price for what happened on this set. It was more or less the end of his career as a respected director. He's never received one tenth of the recognition of his contemporaries, Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola or Scorcese.
Of course it was nowhere near the price paid by Vic Morrow or those two kids.

britsploitation 3 years ago
these guys are complete jerks. "That must have been a horrible part of your life." Yeah about 1/1 millionth as horrible as it was for Vic Morrow and those children.
originalfunkyfry 3 years ago 27
I can't imagine how it must be to accidentally *cause* the death of such people either.
Vic Morrow and the children don't live on with the horrible happenings. That's for the survivors and family to deal with. And also for that helicopter pilot.
I think he deserves some sympathy at least. It was not *his* mistake, but he does have to deal with the tragedy of what happened.
I definately don't see how he's a jerk in any case.
MathijsBuster 3 years ago
@originalfunkyfry It was an accident that occurred many years ago for him. He did not intend for it to happen. The point of the interview to to extract useful information from a person directly involved with the event. Just because the two don't remain serious and remorseful at all times doesn't qualify them as being jerks.
Wesley296 7 months ago
@Wesley296 yes the pilot has to keep living,i think vic morrow would have wanted that,a great actor
cmcneill60 6 months ago

AxisAnalysis 3 years ago 4
yeah
jacobtb1 3 years ago
jacobtb1, you don't know what you are talking about.. Landis is a creep.
doggysector 2 years ago 3
Even if that was true 20 years ago (before current safety standards) the guy hired the children illegally, and then made them work in an unsafe way, cause he couldn't do it legally.
faithfuljohn 3 years ago
It's still true today. Stunt coordinators craft sequences which are beyond the technical understanding of a director.
Like a director of photography, the stunt coordinator attempts to give the director what he wants to see within the limits of saftey, budget, and time.
If the director demands something that is clearly contrary to saftey, the director can and should be denied by the stunt staff. A good stunt staff will also craft an alternative that meets the director's dramatic needs.

Everything focused on John Landis. The jury decided they were not at fault...
invincibleironman3 3 years ago
If you don't stand up and say 'Wait, this is wrong' then perhaps you're part of letting it occur.
Landis seems most at fault, from what I've read in various sources.
DelosFive 3 years ago
Wingo was a Chief Warrant Offier in US Army Aviation and did a tour in Vietnam, the man knows how to pilot a chopper. His flying skills under fire were well documented in 'Nam so if the aircraft could not be controled by Wingo it is doubtful that any aviator could have done any better under the circumstances. There is plenty of blame to go around but pilot error does not enter into the tragic event.
kristov29 3 years ago
from what i've heard i think it was landis fault... he got all blind with making that scene and ended up killing this guy in a really horrible way to die
josemadiazoldenburg 3 years ago
Most of the fault goes to Landis. General disregard for safety throughout the shoot. He got away with it for awhile but it was a Chernobly waiting to happen.

he never disregarded safety. he didnt "get away" with anything. he was making a movie. how was landis supposed to prevent this tragedy, to not imagine a scene with a helicopter in it? the pyrotechnics fucked up.
jacobtb1 3 years ago
There were many at fault, including Wingo. They all went ahead with the scene even though they knew it was dangerous.
Dogheadj 3 years ago
The accident happened at around 2:30 in the morning. A few hours earlier, a similar scene was shot where fire and explosions, according to Wingo, came too close to the helicopter (actually singeing Wingo inside the helicopter as he flew over the set). Wingo told people at the time, including Landis, that this was dangerous. Everyone went ahead anyway. Morrow made his choice. The kids didn't. Just because Landis and Wingo were found not guilty doesn't mean they weren't responsible.

SuperCaliBboyPimpin 4 years ago
The two children that were killed were not actors. John Landis hired the children illegally and hid them from safety officers on set. He knew he was breaking the law and admitted this in court. If the children had been hired legally, their guardians would never have allowed them to take part in the stunt. I think Landis is directly responsible for their deaths.
beetlejuiceonline 4 years ago 25
Pilot Dorcey Wingo wasn't responsible for the accident. The pyrotechnics supervisor made a mistake. He was supposed to check the position of the chopper after he triggered each explosion. He didn't do this and set off two explosions at once when the chopper was flying overhead. His mistake caused the accident.
This stunt was too dangerous and should never have been attempted. The safety offices on set failed in their duty and are responsible for the accident.

Zorn76 4 years ago 4
@Zorn76 To say it was sloppy is an understatement. There were 36 safety violations which were ignored. I exchanged some emails with the helicopter pilot. He sent me his book, Captain Methane. Wingo seems to paint the TZ set as a haven of safety instead of the den of chaos that it was. He doesn't seem to want to really deal with the truth.
