Have you concidered Starship Troopers(1997)? I personally find that it holds an unprecedented amount of hidden black humour, topped off with military, political and popcultural parody. The sugar coating made up of pretty actors and a CGI-budget just improves the over-the-top-parody.
Oh, and im glad you excluded Avatar. Pocahontas, the disney movie all over again, except in space..
Come on AI? AI was rated better than Brazil? Better than Blade Runner? Better than Alien?
AI was a bitter BITTER disappointment, primarily because I could see what Kubrick wanted to do with the film, and what SPIELBERG (yuck) did with it. It was a popcorn flick.
Kubrick sweated and toiled over his films. Spielberg squeezes them out like Nadia Suleman has children.
@luyben12 1.- Lord of the Rings is Fantasy. 2.- I consider Matrix a bad copy of "Ghost in the Shell", "DarkCity" and Akira. 3.- Star Wars is for me an epic Fantastic Film in SPACE. 4.- When i created this video Avatar was in production, anyway i don´t consider it one of the best movies of James Cameron.
Very good lists, I was fearing that I watch every good science fiction movie. Thanks to you I added 29 movies I have never watch to my own list ! I hope you understood my bad conjugaison ^^
Very nice list, I agree with most picks. It just sucks because I was hoping to find a movie I had not seen before...but I've seen them all. Btw, should update your list to include Inception, original idea and a great movie, in top 20 for sure.
great 60s sci fi films - Dr who & the daleks - dalek invasion earth - fantastic voyage - first men in the moon - Quatermass & the pit - day of the triffids - the earth dies screaming - the time machine - island of terror - night of the big heat - cant miss out either Dr Who / Star Trek maybe not a films but to important to miss out -
sorry [ voyage to the bottom of the sea - yes incorrectly by me put in 50s]
i was brought up on my dads old vids, & inherited them, so ive seen most sci fi films, and a lot of films in general, for you guys out there who think star trek & starwars is it, check out forbidden planet, which was the forunner to startrek, and all the film made after the 50s upto today are based upon that list, in one way or another, for example take the Morlocks & Eloy from the 60s time machine, the film, was the basis for Dr Who, & these where the basis for the Daleks & Tals in doctor who
these films no way had the benifit of budgets of today, and maybe even dodgy sets and effects but wow, they stand against any & all of todays films, regardless of budgets, it was about acting then suspence, the actors had to make you believe it was real, because of less than ideal sets & props, not going to say todays actors are crap, but some of them give lazy performances, because they know the special effects will grab you, less concentration upon facial expression and acting ablities
conquest of space - destination moon - forbidden planet - invaders from mars - invasion of the body snatchers - i married a space monster - it came from outer space - it the terror from outer space - not of this earth - Quatermass1/2 - x the unknown - the day the earth stood still - the strange world of planet x - the thing from another world - the war of the worlds - this island earth - vogage to the bottom of the sea - when worlds collide - all 50s - the time machine 60s - Ultimate list ever
1st, it;s not a personal list "you made it public" so dont winge! if you get berated, for a pp list, and it is, your being told by people, what about this & that, you then have the termerity to tell them look at my international list, you have shown a countdown! and placed at the begining, METROPOLIS, well, it's by a german & a cast of german people, you managed a few 50s classics, wow you'll notice more & more the remakes which regardless fails, because they where superior films inc pp effects
I actually agree on the top three, and in that order. I have Empire Strikes Back in the Top 5. But, great list overall. Nice work and thanks for posting! (Great soundtrack!)
the triffids is a great old 70s brit sci fi that should be on there
and an 80's series called the tripods was really cool
and p jacksons district 9 should be on there cos its a great metaphor as well as a cool film. And nothing japanese?! what about tetsuo the iron man?! or arkia, was event horizon on there? I guess its the nature of lists for them to be incomplete and have omissions
but you definately covered all the basics, well done
Hi CSNC82 - Brilliantly put together - Got a good list there of films to watch - The music was carefully worked out and perfectly suited - Compliments to your skills in making this an entertaining watch.
I agree with most except 2001, I watched it and never got it, to me it was more like an acid trip gone wrong :S.. but that's just me.. fav one on my opinion is alien, it's so great :)
Ok,so I've watched all of your sci-fi list and frankly,I'm disappointed.I respect the fact that this is your list, but come on.None of the "Star wars" films made the list? Are you serious? And why isn't there a single Godzilla or other dinosaur movie on the list? Many of those like"Jurassic Park"were groundbreaking sci-fi films. Also, why are only remakes of films such as"The Fly" ,"Body Snatchers"and"The Thing"listed?I'm sorry, but without the originals, those films wouldn't be here.
Aliens had the whole theater jumping out of their seats. It was the second movie that scared the crap out of me. Jaws was the first. But if I watch Alien at ANYTIME I still jump.
Blade Runner is in fact a classic. And 2001 still puts you into space over 40 years later.
Science fiction in movies is 83-years old; and science fiction in books goes back 200-years to the Frankenstein book, and 150-years for Jules Verne and his Moon mission. America has science fiction and always looking for the Next Big Thing.

I have the Kino International VHS release, from the 90's, and that has awesome music!

I consider Alien to be a horror movie. The film maker doesn't explore any scientific ideas. The intent of the movie is to scare you. It's a monster movie.
I think 2001 is interesting but my problem with it is that it's not a whole movie. It's a series of vignettes. The characters and story don't hook you in on an emotional level.

to recommend: Lifeforce.british SF.1985 by Tobe Hooper.

A few movies I would have added
Star Wars: People in the comments criticize it for not having a message but its still a milestone in sci-fi
Matrix: Deep and action packed, the perfect movie to end the milenium
Terminator 2: Dont think it as good as the original but still very good
Conquest of the planet of the apes: Good enough to be on the 50-45 spot
The Salute of the of the jugger: Personal favorite.
