Cats plan almost all of their jumps unless they're very familiar with them. Take a new cat home and sit on the couch. Chances are he'll sit at the foot and bob his head up and down at the couch for 20-30 seconds gauging the distance.

When kittens grow up they really get a feel for how far/high they can jump and they don't really do stupid stuff anymore.
