Great video! If you are interested in the fur trade, you will probably like FUR, FORTUNE, AND EMPIRE: THE EPIC HISTORY OF THE FUR TRADE IN AMERICA (W. W. NORTON, JULY 2010). To see a book trailer for this book, search fur trade history on youtube, or search the title. The book is available in bookstores, online and in stores.
@Montork Hey Friend, it's not a woodchuck; it's a beaver. This little spot is there for a reason. For decades the trade in beaver pelts was nearly the backbone of the economy in trade between the Aboriginal peoples and the Canadians. That's why the beaver is depicted in cameo in this short film. All the best to you!

Brilliant. I remember this from when I was a kid and it is an amazing piece of Canadiana. Their canoes weighed 265 kg empty--holy cow! That's around 500lb for you Yanks out there. "But their routes became our roads; and their endurance and pluck, our heritage". Canada IS wilderness and the NFB shows our relationship to it. Makes me absolutely proud to be Canadian.
Ahh, "J'entends le moulin". I've searched for this, on and off, for a few years, but my French has really atrophied away... Does anyone know the name of the choir that sang for this particular vignette? As soothing as Michael Kane's voice is, I wouldn't mind hearing it without the narration. While we're on the subject of NFBofC vignette music, anyone know the score from Paul Bochner's two vignettes "Faces" and "Maple Leaf"?
Hi,Sounds like I'm looking for the same thing. I too saw it on Ray Mears and thought it sounded great. I'm into all sorts of 'Folk' type music and the Voyageur's sounded just the type of sound that I'm into. I've discovered Voyageur's World, a website dedicated to this type of stuff if you're interested. Cheers...Paul
I thought this music was great when I heard it on Ray Mears and although I've found similar music, I think the group The sons of voyageurs sound like the group I'm looking for. If you google it on heartistry music you can listen to some snippets and it says mp3 downloads coming. I've also heard that song from Ray Mears on the Frank Hennesy folk music radio program on BBC Wales. An excellent show for obscure music.
wow! watching this makes me feel so connected to Canada! I swear I have some voyageur in me! i know it was a shitty struggle for them, but i love canoeing! i love struggling through the portages, because all that hard work pays off when you get to see our beautiful Canadian wildlife! thank you Canada
This song is sooo awesome

These spots were such a mainstay on Canadian TV in the 1970s and 80s and something to dearly enjoy.

This is the Vignette that haunted me when young and that I really remember. The hardship of that life is wonderfully conveyed in this animation.

Wow, to think this was found in slots between TV shows years ago. Now it's all planned out to the second, to maximize the ads blasted at us.
Thank goodness I got to see stuff like this. I pity the current unlearned generation ...
