  • You simply can't say Virgil is the best in the world and ignore Thomas Lang, Tony Royster, Ron Bruner, Vinnie Coliauta, and especially the "Amazing Drum Solo" dude in New Zealand. Drums are not about soloing, they're about groove. That being said, I saw Virgil at MI in 1995 after hearing him in a practice room with a single bass drum. When I went to his clinic, me and everybody else just SHIT. His mastery of rudiments from his hands to his feet just destroyed me.

  • Maestro, Brett Garsed, let's not forget., Guitarist, Farnsie and the rest.

  • HE is REALLY FUCKIN GOOD

  • his bass drum sounded awesome

  • there are other 4 trolls out there..... no se que quiero decir con eso pero queda bien para q "thumbsupéen" esta frase :)

  • @JoeJacari

    TROLL!! TROLL ALERT!!!!!!

  • @JoeJacari will you just fuck off from posting comments with the name travis barker in them on virgil video's? and even you're "oh im so stupid virgil is actually good" comments? i wanna be able to read different comments than you talking shit and people responding to you.

  • @JoeJacari Repeat after me, everyone: I will not feed the troll!

  • i have seen teens crying during one of his clinics( wanna be drummers) accure, skillfull, melodic (in some way)inspite the cool show off.

  • Makes you wonder how people can call Travis Barker or Joey Jordisan any good.

  • First track I heard of Virgil was on a Modern Drummer CD backin 98. I was thinking how do you do this, and I listened over and over. This guy inspires so many.

  • Are you kidding me! No one can touch this monster. Many styles many drummers, all

great in there own ways, however Virgil's chops from a supreme mastery of technique is unrivaled. He is one in a million drummers and with soul.

  • Virgils great!

  • Que buen batero, en este solo se nota mucho el estilo que tiene en los solos :D

  • There's just nothing like this anywhere else in the drumming world

  • it's just his snare, it's tuned like crap that's all... if his snare sounded amazing it would change this whole video.

  • lo que hace mas o menos entre el el minuto 4:10 a 4:20 lo ha convertido en mi favorito por muchos años ;)

eeaaa Virgil Donati el Master #1 (ya se que hay otros buenos)

  • Virgil donati is more of a funk drummer. his elements are funk based. the way he is playing on his snare shows that plus his double bass drum techniques. hes great.

  • Stunt drumming. He's the best above the rest

  • Sorry to all Weckl fans but his solos are way EASIER to listen to than Weckl's solos. Defintely more musical.

  • I can't help but dislike the feel of virgil's playing. Don't get me wrong, I'm fairly sure that I've never seen another drummer that can match him technically, I mean, that video with the two paradiddles going at once, one double, between left and and left foot, and one standard between right hand and right foot, then swapping it! That shit's insane! and he does it with such ease! But yeah... something about his style doesn't hit the right nerves, I prefer Julian Percy. (username: sanusortus)

  • @PickUpYourLighters that's cool man, that's what makes every drummer unique! If everyone liked the exact same thing music would be boring. U still recognize the musicianship in his playing, which is what matters.

  • @Groovemaster2k Cheers for not being a fanboy douche ^____^ Nice to hear that someone on youtube can hear that their favourite musician is not everybody's favourite musician without bursting into tears.

  • @PickUpYourLighters haha thx

  • Can you imagine how FUN it would be to be able to do that??!!!!!

  • OFF THE HOOK!

  • just incredible !!! WHAT can i saY ?

  • bad drum sound .... snare sounds choked and the toms are not live enough

  • @sweetfly66 ITS A TAPE FROM 10 YEARS AGO ON YOUTUBE!

  • @Sc0ttPrian ... so what ... go look at joe morello with Dave Brubeck ... it is black and white from 50 years ago and it sounds magnificent .... go look at some of the live Beatles on YouTube ... big huge sounds ..... these drums sound like shit , and video quality or era is irrelevant

  • @sweetfly66 im just saying its the quality of this specific video. who knows what the uploader went through to get it posted. i know that there are tons of old videos that sound amazing.

  • @sweetfly66 and you can tell by listening to a bad quality youtube video...

  • @Jellymann .... see my comments above on why video quality is irrelevant

  • 4:06-4:19 my favorite section.

This was my Virgil's Virgin years...his best.

    Sic guitarist double tapper.

Great band....freakin at last minute and half.

  • Only those simple tools that can't count it would say this is random. Virgil can break down any part of this solo and tell you what he was doing. That's not random.

  • the guitar players are mad..!! Who are they? Of course virgil is crazy ....

  • love that snare!

  • Somehow I prefer the "old" Virgil that we see in this video, thesedays he sound too mathematic

  • Well, I wouldn't mind makin some "random noise" like this!!!!!

  • yea!

  • This man is my hero... Inspired me to start playing. THANK YOU DIRTY HIPPIE! :D Hahaha! Best nickname EVER!

  • Oi you dumbasses comenting saying you are saying that it is just random noise. it's not it is a insane version of the three camps and who does know what that is should be commenting this also has complex buzz or press rolls. Virgil is also doing this in a trad grip what is insanely hard to master he also using the ends of the sticks fliping his rits around ok all you bastards saying that he is crap go dig a hole and die in it

  • Donati is a great durmmer, i personally don't like him thouht, but he's a great drummer

  • Ignore those fuckers. Most posers who talk about drummers so pretenciously have never touch a drum set in their entire life... the rest is people who think that a drummer who doesn't play black metal at 200bpm is not a drummer.

    Virgil owns.

    Heil metal.

  • awesome!!! seen him live before in Adelaide... liked watching him do this better!!

  • fuck you....i want to see you doing not random noise

  • @lmospina42 this is bollox, just the same random sequence of whatever comes to mind, cant excuse that shit man, you cant, he's a self infatuated virtuoso, its pretentious and rhetoric. I dont care that he blazes around the kits every so often, you've been dupped.

  • THANK YOU! I hate comparing drummers, but when all of these people are making such bold statements about Virg on this one clip it's annoying. He has really good feet yes, but feet are only a part of the equation. End.

  • same shit, different show...

  • @stellarshore

    go suck a dick

  • good point

  • @stellarshore

    lol

  • that fuckin snare drum is a monster.

  • Virgil is a combination of all the top drummers... he is also king of speed. No matter how great the top drummers are Virgil is just a little bit ahead.

  • that second guitar solo has some tasty bits too

  • I love the sound of his kit. Its hypnotic.

  • i think ur the one who is musically illiterate here...

as far as everybody's concerned... thats one hell of a monster solo...

  • Wow I can not believe someone would say Virgil Donati has nothing to say musically!... Virgil has such a unique sound, one of the greatest innovators of our time by far.. The perfect marriage of technical ability and musicality, an absolute monster. DongFangSue, I dont know you dude.. but I can't see how any serious player can make such a statement.. blows my mind.

  • @court2784 anybody saying that on Donati's drumming has no ear for any sort of music, let alone DRUM.

  • @court2784 The thing I love about Virgil is his single & double stroke rolls are so clean and consistent. I was fortune enough to see Virgil way back in the late 80's & early 90's in clubs & pubs in Melbourne (Virgil's hometown!), he was doing things back then that's never been seen since. Things were moving so fast that nobody bothered to document, we were all just mesmerised at watching him play that we forgot to press record!! LOL!!

  • @court2784 Virgil Donati is the best drummer in the world. There cannot be argument about it.When he plays he mocks time.

  • @court2784

amazing solo, then he proceeds into hard rock!

as a player, I don't find him very musical.

  • @Samsgarden he is very musical in his playing. Perhaps the musical settings he puts himself in requires just loud drums, but he can and DOES play with dynamics, rhythmical understanding, and an all around understanding of his instrument.

  • @Samsgarden Can you explain what you mean with Hard Rock? I mean you know that the base of hard rock is melody, right? but this is a solo listen to

    watch?v=w4aEz_nr8p8&feature=fvwrel

  • @farrex0

I've watched this before and it does very little for me. I prefer subdued, nuanced playing- something most musicians don't quite fathom. Virgil is great and all, but so what, he's also crude and falls somewhere in the metal-prog scene -which makes me recoil You might find all this offensive but I don't mean it that way. I just prefer tasteful playing-and Virgil doesn't have it.

It was never his life's mission to be musical anyway- he just wanted to be a technical drummer.

  • Virgil Donati é foda !!!!!!!!

  • The best rock drummer of all times

  • virgil es anterior, thomas lang es fanatico del tipo este jaja XD

  • awesome!!!!! WEW

  • I love this guys playing. He is a monster on the drum kit. I loved his drumming ever since I saw him play in the Steve Vai Astoria gig in 2001. Brillaint player and amazing drummer.

  • the snare sounds fuckin great here! and his playing... awesome!

  • I agree with you luke228899. I love the crack the snare has when he hits a single stroke. Amazing stuff from an amazing drummer.

  • extraterrestre

  • B.E.A.S.T

WHAT THE FUCK is THAT between 4:03 and 4:04????

if it is a lick and not pure spasm then its the fastest lick i ever heard. lol

  • Thats a bad ass lick!!!!

  • i believe that he is more "transparent" and less "harsh" than now...

  • Lot of elements in this solo show up in the one he did on the Steve Vai Live DVD.

  • WOW! His style is sooo different compared to now....

  • Virgil is from Planet X both literally and figuratively! :)

  • holy bad ace! what band is this?

  • I love that Virgil is so technically talented, but he still beats his drums really hard.

  • Agree! Technical, yet with a PASSION!!!

  • people start dying after his drum solos OH NO 7:20! shit. OAVONWEIPNGPAIWKMG

  • Yeah, and this was over 10 years ago!! You think he was good back then? He's doing stuff right now that the brains of us mere mortals can't begin to comprehend.

  • Killer drummer, flawless technique, a master...but I never hear such a horrible snare sound in my life!!

  • yeah its pretty bad, but i think the sound quality affects it aswell. but hey, virgil could be playing on a bunch of sticks and it would still sound incredible! haha

  • this was such a great era in Virgil's career. it was the period that first tripped everyone the fuck out.

  • perfect drummer of course =)

i think it sounds weird because the snare seems to be crazy tuned ^^ but the drum set sound great =)

  • to me he is the perfect drummer

  • He's definitely the goal for a drummer haha.

  • Woow!!

Virgil playing Yamaha drums... great sound. Maple custom rules!!!

    NB

    --

  • is the sound quality of the vid sound bad, or is it his drums? either way amazing playing

  • Yeah, that didn't feel quite as authoritative as most of his solos on youtube. Perhaps he just wanted to take a break from melting everyone's faces off.

  • jajajajja....la cagó

  • Strong, Real, Real, Real strong. He laid it all on the table with that. That's amazing passion (and skill, of course). I'll have to remember that next time I timidly muff a solo.
