You simply can't say Virgil is the best in the world and ignore Thomas Lang, Tony Royster, Ron Bruner, Vinnie Coliauta, and especially the "Amazing Drum Solo" dude in New Zealand. Drums are not about soloing, they're about groove. That being said, I saw Virgil at MI in 1995 after hearing him in a practice room with a single bass drum. When I went to his clinic, me and everybody else just SHIT. His mastery of rudiments from his hands to his feet just destroyed me.

@JoeJacari will you just fuck off from posting comments with the name travis barker in them on virgil video's? and even you're "oh im so stupid virgil is actually good" comments? i wanna be able to read different comments than you talking shit and people responding to you.
First track I heard of Virgil was on a Modern Drummer CD backin 98. I was thinking how do you do this, and I listened over and over. This guy inspires so many.
Virgil donati is more of a funk drummer. his elements are funk based. the way he is playing on his snare shows that plus his double bass drum techniques. hes great.
I can't help but dislike the feel of virgil's playing. Don't get me wrong, I'm fairly sure that I've never seen another drummer that can match him technically, I mean, that video with the two paradiddles going at once, one double, between left and and left foot, and one standard between right hand and right foot, then swapping it! That shit's insane! and he does it with such ease! But yeah... something about his style doesn't hit the right nerves, I prefer Julian Percy. (username: sanusortus)
@PickUpYourLighters that's cool man, that's what makes every drummer unique! If everyone liked the exact same thing music would be boring. U still recognize the musicianship in his playing, which is what matters.
@Groovemaster2k Cheers for not being a fanboy douche ^____^ Nice to hear that someone on youtube can hear that their favourite musician is not everybody's favourite musician without bursting into tears.
@Sc0ttPrian ... so what ... go look at joe morello with Dave Brubeck ... it is black and white from 50 years ago and it sounds magnificent .... go look at some of the live Beatles on YouTube ... big huge sounds ..... these drums sound like shit , and video quality or era is irrelevant
@sweetfly66 im just saying its the quality of this specific video. who knows what the uploader went through to get it posted. i know that there are tons of old videos that sound amazing.
Only those simple tools that can't count it would say this is random. Virgil can break down any part of this solo and tell you what he was doing. That's not random.
Oi you dumbasses comenting saying you are saying that it is just random noise. it's not it is a insane version of the three camps and who does know what that is should be commenting this also has complex buzz or press rolls. Virgil is also doing this in a trad grip what is insanely hard to master he also using the ends of the sticks fliping his rits around ok all you bastards saying that he is crap go dig a hole and die in it
Ignore those fuckers. Most posers who talk about drummers so pretenciously have never touch a drum set in their entire life... the rest is people who think that a drummer who doesn't play black metal at 200bpm is not a drummer.
@lmospina42 this is bollox, just the same random sequence of whatever comes to mind, cant excuse that shit man, you cant, he's a self infatuated virtuoso, its pretentious and rhetoric. I dont care that he blazes around the kits every so often, you've been dupped.
THANK YOU! I hate comparing drummers, but when all of these people are making such bold statements about Virg on this one clip it's annoying. He has really good feet yes, but feet are only a part of the equation. End.
Virgil is a combination of all the top drummers... he is also king of speed. No matter how great the top drummers are Virgil is just a little bit ahead.
Wow I can not believe someone would say Virgil Donati has nothing to say musically!... Virgil has such a unique sound, one of the greatest innovators of our time by far.. The perfect marriage of technical ability and musicality, an absolute monster. DongFangSue, I dont know you dude.. but I can't see how any serious player can make such a statement.. blows my mind.
@court2784 hang on ..first off, the guy has total identity because his playing concepts are at times so utterly unique, and whether you are liking them or not is definitely your opinion. But as a musician having your own voice IS a musical statement. Now when you consider that he as Sherinian has stated , Virgil has composed 90% of Planet X's music, that adds up to a pretty hefty and undeniable musical statement. Particularily in the company of Sherinian and Mcalpine.
@court2784 The thing I love about Virgil is his single & double stroke rolls are so clean and consistent. I was fortune enough to see Virgil way back in the late 80's & early 90's in clubs & pubs in Melbourne (Virgil's hometown!), he was doing things back then that's never been seen since. Things were moving so fast that nobody bothered to document, we were all just mesmerised at watching him play that we forgot to press record!! LOL!!
@Samsgarden he is very musical in his playing. Perhaps the musical settings he puts himself in requires just loud drums, but he can and DOES play with dynamics, rhythmical understanding, and an all around understanding of his instrument.
I've watched this before and it does very little for me. I prefer subdued, nuanced playing- something most musicians don't quite fathom. Virgil is great and all, but so what, he's also crude and falls somewhere in the metal-prog scene -which makes me recoil You might find all this offensive but I don't mean it that way. I just prefer tasteful playing-and Virgil doesn't have it.
It was never his life's mission to be musical anyway- he just wanted to be a technical drummer.
I love this guys playing. He is a monster on the drum kit. I loved his drumming ever since I saw him play in the Steve Vai Astoria gig in 2001. Brillaint player and amazing drummer.
Yeah, and this was over 10 years ago!! You think he was good back then? He's doing stuff right now that the brains of us mere mortals can't begin to comprehend.
yeah its pretty bad, but i think the sound quality affects it aswell. but hey, virgil could be playing on a bunch of sticks and it would still sound incredible! haha
Yeah, that didn't feel quite as authoritative as most of his solos on youtube. Perhaps he just wanted to take a break from melting everyone's faces off.
Strong, Real, Real, Real strong. He laid it all on the table with that. That's amazing passion (and skill, of course). I'll have to remember that next time I timidly muff a solo.
This is insane brilliance.
God....Please let me see these guys before I die.
Amen.

great in there own ways, however Virgil's chops from a supreme mastery of technique is unrivaled. He is one in a million drummers and with soul.
