i'm a 18 y-old boy, atheist, have a rock band in brazil, former smoker, had created and kicked out of a gang, saw a friend got shooted in his head, and tried to kill myself twice. yet, i love this song, as it calms my mind, so as lots of other rachmaninoff's songs. sometimes i think i'm just a child growing up while listen to this masterpiece. as they say, music is for everyone, but great songs are just for crazy people
@ilandero1 when i was around 7 i had a Frank Sinatra compilation CD and the one track that stood out to me was 'I Think Of You', I kid you not.... then when I was 17 I had Origin of Symmetry, and 'Space Dementia' stood out to me as well... now I hope that if I listen to this video enough times I will be able to fully enjoy this great piece in its own right!
At 2:10 you can hear what became "My Girl" by Eric Carmen (1976). Apparently he borrowed melodies for more than his first two big hits but also for other songs on his debut LP as well.
I think most of people in the world do not understand the meaning and the spiritual feeling of this kind of music ! ! . . . At least, must try hearing it in silent, calm night , this is my opinion.
@tjtheplay They probably didn't. Rach 2 is about as hard as Rach 3 (All movements included.) Well if they where some pianistic genius the probably could have, Lugansky learned Rach 3 in 3 days.
@rukashawn What do you mean with quite hard? I am asking for a tip :-) You compare this peace with what? I mean, if i can play ... peace, i can play this concerto. Only to have a idea :-)
@eu08071996 i don’t know, I can play liszt, chopin, prokofiev, bach, etc… but I find rachmaninovs pieces very challenging. The harmony and style, it's quite advance (for tonal music), very unique. and his music, it has depth all by itself regardless of the interpretation and dynamics. and i think, i fell in love with these guy o_O

It's the music of the movie Brief Encounter. Just beautiful. It has it's own language and we can experience various feelings when we listen to it with the heart. I think it is telling us a story which the composer has lived himself and that he has to tell everyone because it's bigger than him.
Just started learning this song on the piano. Have got to say that it looks and sounds way easier than it is as the piano as muffled for a great deal of time. Again, I am glad that I have big hands as there are so many 10ths.
But despite the challenge, this is by far my favorite song ever.
@SordidGuy That's because you weren't taught to :) Music like this is like its own language, every tone, raising oe falling, every pause etc has some meaning. I don't hear any words either, I just let myself be immersed in the feelings it arouses in me and interpret with my gut feeling.
This song came on the radio, never heard it before, but I stopped everything I was doing once I realized how wonderful it was. Then my mom heard me listening to it the next day and she stopped everything she was doing....we listened to it together.
The beginning is like..how can i explain it..like a meeting, but yet it is something so interesting that it makes you wonder how this piece will turn out.
The second movement is to die for. In fact this whole piece is. Gorgeous composition--fantastic piano part--impressive piece. It has such a weight--the solo part with a heavy amount of technically difficult aspects--yet it flows seamlessly with the themes and harmonies--so the whole piece is relaxed--intense, but relaxed.
8:02 makes me really feel the sudden loss of the rest of the music. *That* is when I want to cry. But, by 8:45, it makes me feel so hopeful. I love it.
Say, this is probably a stupid question (since i dont play piano at all) but in measure 8, wouldn't you need more than 10 fingers to play that? the chords themselves take 9, and there whole notes, but then you need an extra one for the treble cleft part part and like 2 extra for the bass cleft part. Just curious lol.
@seekerperson7 yes, but you wont keep the 9 whole notes all the way. They re meant to be played as quarters. Those whole notes will be kept by the pedal. After playing them , you go on and play the next..
This was recorded in early January of 1956. Reiner and Rubinstein did not like each other, there were several flare-ups, culminating in Rubinstein storming out of a recording session, and Rubinstein never recorded or appeared with Reiner after this was finished. how people can be deceived so easily with a book that I think is a paperweight
even so, this book is so useless that can be used to light a fire
