I always thought it odd that Verdi composed such a beautiful aria for such a despicable character. But with Bastianini singing, nothing matters except those gorgeous tones...

Every character in Trovatore gets at least one stupendous aria -- this is di Luna's. And it one of the most beautiful and most challenging in all of opera for a bartione. And when sung like this, sheer opera at the Olympics.

Bastianini era grandissimo immenso, il più grande baritono del dopoguerra... Io non ho mai sentito un Luna e un Renato cantato come lo faceva lu. Peccato, io sono giovane ho 36 anni, ma Bastianini è il più grande baritono italiano del dopoguerra.
