BTW..this program has a great copy right and water mark tool. before you do anything... save a copy of your original first.

Normally I would just open up the image by going to File>Open and then finding the image you want

Well depends. If you are willing to sacrifice the text properties of the text layer (you won't be able to edit what you wrote) then you can just go to Layer>Layer to Image Size.

Otherwise, just click off of the text tool and whatever can go away, should go away

well for now i'll briefly explain, to float a selection, it just puts whatever you have selected on a new layer. Alpha to selection means anything on the layer you are on is selected.
