You Yanks are so obsessive! this is a great song it crosses boarders and teaches you about life outside your minimal universe try opening your mind after all just because its a world series doesnt mean its about about base ball in one country! come to England or better still send your teachers or your president and they might learn its not just about one nation one people its about growing the people to become one planet, oh by the way this isnt a political dig personally its about the music!
As if the average 13 year old white boy is anymore of a grown man...working the fields as a sharecropper is something that was very common for black males (regardless of age) to do post-slavery up until the 1960s. I'm forty years old and all I have heard is what "black men don't do". It is past time to stop raising black boys to think they are bad by nature. The theory of they 'need a lesson' from someone who claims to be better or smarter than they are has failed three generations now.
Great song. Interesting, to me, that I thought of it after receiving an email signed by somebody whose initials were CC. Might be coincidence, although I have begun to notice recently that I often use a word when writing that I have just read elsewhere. This tendency to make links can be used for sinister purposes!
My moms was my "Patches"! She came from dirt to Chicago and birthed us kids. She worked hard to keep a roof over our heads despite all the odds against her. She passed on in June 1994, but her memory will live on through my behavior and the way I treat others. Peace be unto you mom...Love You and Miss You!
@Leo55BabyBoomer Thanks for sharing this with us (me). I can see your mom was a brave woman. Never dissapoint her, wherever she is, she'is looking at you.
even as an 11-yr-old kid growin up in jersey, i could feel the sentiment of this beautiful song...always tugs at my heart when i hear it...go, clarence!
Unless we get the attention of our young people, we will continue to bury them prematurely. In order to get their attention, we must have something to offer them.
My mom says this song reminds her of me, when she got divorced i became the man of the house at age 14. I went out n got a job and supported my family. Thats the way it needs to be.
I use to sit in my daddy"s ford pick up truck and listen to this song on a eight track tape wow miss my dad soo much RIP Otis Stewart Fort Worth Tx. i was about 10 years old. LOL
this was played as my uncles Martin Yates' Funeral song, he loved this song so bloody much...in tribute to such a massive character and much loved family member Missed and Loved so true love for ever just for you!! x Katie x
This is a song for EVERYONE! When shit gets hard you better buck up and do what you need to do to survive! Don't depend on the government to support you! I have pride, I would sooner die than go to DSS. My father worked 3 jobs to support our family and if need be I would do also.
Ah, me in my little mini skirt always difficult to dance to but my God, Clarence Carter the master beautiful track, back to the Peppers Erdington anyone remember? Jeff Lynne's old stomping ground, got a photo and a kiss in 69!
Michael Jackson said he sometimes felt the boy in this song... I forget where I read that, but when I did I respected him so much more. I've always loved this song and being young (16) thought it was just some old and melancholic tune. That he liked it gives it more credibility :)
Powerful story and a truly emotional interpretation from an underrated vocalist. Great job Clarence. Patches' difficulties sure put my own into perspective!
i pray another generation of children (not degerates) will embrace this man's message but thats why there is reverse mortgage for the ones who didnt get it tsk tsk tsk
People who don't appreciate these lyrics don't understand art or life. True art is being able to tell a story in a way that generates understanding, compassion, and feeling from the listener. Life is hard and we shouldn't run away from that. I don't know who wrote the song, but he or she did a great job, and Carter finished it by conveying the right meaning.
It's a shame how music changes our society to the point people would even pay for the crap they put out now !! It seems after the 70's and early 80's all the good musicians , song writers and so called " singers " went from talent and substance to hate and non-patriotic songs !! Rap is not even music but people talking and spitting on the microphone and people PAY for that !!! God bless the USA as our younger generation has been led astray and think being disrespectful to others !!! SO SAD !!!
I AM walking out to my next cagefight to this song ! REAL AMERICANS would understand that this country was built on HARDWORK and STRUGGLE , A NATION UNDER GOD , every American has a story , and this song is a great STORY , we all have a little PATCHES inside us . PRAY LIKE PATCHES MAMA and youll be alright!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
@z26a1y25b2x24c3 Yeah, the music nowadays is much better than this crap. This poser dosn't know how to sing worth crap, unlike the great musicians who grace us with their presence nowadays. The likes of Justin Bieber, Usher, Keisha, etc. would make this guy run for the hills. There is nothing like listening to songs about doing drugs, getting drunk, having sex, and "pimping on the ladies." That is the real music right there! *sarcasm*
@fatkinson2011 I'm sure there are people out there who have had harder times than me. But I've seen bad times and I've been there. I don't believe that you really under the meanings of hard times.

@fffunfarm at least he can say he had grammy and did something with his life, unlike someone like you who has nothing better to do than to sit on youtube and criticize people.
How I agree with veraduerga. I will be glad when we as a people have to re-learn being particularly genuine again - without the multitude of material and technological distractions we have become accustomed to (hello to declining energy resources and other factors). I wish I had known a life love such as Patches or his "daddy." Would have brought out the best in me (as with most/all of us?). When listening now, inspired to work right along side of him. Grateful that we had such music...
I remember this song when it came out-- it touched me-- his voice and the images of doing one's best against all odds; all the emotion in his voice still moves me--
The forlorn harmonica reminds me of The Fox and the Hound.

aspire lord that's the truth it make me think of my daddy god rest his soul we grow up in porest part of north carolina.my daddy worked me to death but i love him even more for it.we were tobacco farmer's,when my daddy died i had to quit school to tend the feilds myself.that following year we sold the farm mamma made me go back to school and to college.i now work for time warner but that's now how i honor my father.
Something we all need to do is call them let them know we love them
my daddy passed away when i was 10 this is alot like wat he told me i just called my momma up and thanked her for wat i have and told her how muched i loved her

aspire lord that's the truth it make me think of my daddy god rest his soul we grow up in porest part of north carolina.my daddy worked me to death but i love him even more for it.we were tobacco farmer's,when my daddy died i had to quit school to tend the feilds myself.that following year we sold the farm mamma made me go back to school and to college.i now work for time warner but that's now how i honor my father.
Something we all need to do is call them let them know we love them

One of the favorites of my youth; I had this on 45 rpm disc and the picture brings back that memory too. Great song.
