In America, the Stewball ballad was "...most popular in the Negro south, where the winning horse is known variously as 'Stewball' or 'Kimball," and was apparently one of the chain-gang songs. The song was recorded by Leadbelly in 1940 (cd available via the Smithsonian Museum), by Joan Baez (album title Joan Baez/5), by Peter Paul and Mary, and a number of successive artists.
@evilofisalm Awful? What makes you say that? It sounds to me that he's right on pitch. You may not care for the song, but that's regardless of his performance.
@evilofisalm Of course, you're entitled to your opinion, but I don't understand. What's wrong with Nash's performance? I do think that his microphone is a bit too loud, compared to Clarke's. Also, Nash is singing a high-pitched harmony, which is supposed to enhance the main vocal, not supercede it. A better balance between the two would have leveled the vocals... apparently an audio goof by the television studio sound engineers.
@evilofisalm Thanks. Also, it wasn't really Nash's fault, considering he had no control over the microphone volume. He was simply doing his thing and may not have realized the difference as it sounded to the listener.
clarke/nash a duo for the ages. seeing them together at their table during the R&RHOF ceremony was just great! the perfect cumination of a wonderful music career!
Peter Paul & Mary had the original on Stewball. Paul & Mary were among the writers. Great version by the Hollies. Thanks for posting. I never knew they did this song!
@BritainsBestGuitar I agree with you...I have listened to them sing the same thing back to back and the Hollies really do sound beter, I think it is because Allan has a better voice than either Steven Stills or David Crosby ... what I listened to was The Hollies live Reunion CD and CSN both singing Wasted On The Way and Teach your Children... I prefer The Hollies version.
@ocarrington Graham developed his wonderful voice in tandem with the dulcet Allan Clarke -- both are fine instruments. David Crosby - the second finest harmony singer in modern rock history - blends rather well with Nash, though not as well as the fellow Graham grew up with. Stills.... hmmm....
An opportunity to showcase Graham's rich, high, harmonic voice of his yourth. Never really heard him so distinctly before. And of course, Allen and the rest are great also! Thanks for sharing.
The amplification was unbalanced, but this gives us an opportunity to appreciate Graham Nash's phenomenally acute ear for harmony. I doubt anyone would have an easy time reproducing what he sang here,
@evilofisalm I think Graham Nash was fine - it was the amplification. Graham has sung with Allan Clarke off and on since he was five years old, their voices blended almost as if by instinct. Unfortunately for those that don't care for Nash, they don't care for Nash, I guess.

Graham Nash should never have left The Hollies. CSN & CSNY were OK but in my opinion, The Hollies were always better.

I really love this song, but i prefer like they recorded without orchestra.

Agree. The orchestration is a distraction. The band's singing is great, as usual, though.
