I thought Genesis was really booring although I heard some moog and mellotron and stuff, but then I got Genesis Live and I saw the album cover, freaked out, then I heard Peter Gabriel describing what the song was about, then I got it. They are telling stories with the lyrics. I was expecting Yes nonsense lyrics, but the songs make sense, then songs like Hogweed, and stuff made more sense. Now they have a consistency about them.
there is a huge difference in genesis with peter as the front man compared with phil, but there is also a huge difference between genesis before and after hackett leave
Phil Collins, John Bonham, Keith Moon are probably the best drummers of rock history. Steve Hackett is one of the greatest guitarists ever. He's a genius. They just don't give him enough credit and that sucks.
Lot of comparison of Genesis to Pink Floyd and their problems. Fact is Tony Banks
and Mike Rutherford had the least ego problems, yet were probably the most talented and could write and play multi instruments. You have to respect Tony being the founding member of this band and sticking it out, with Mike, the whole time. That's character and a true musician, not a famous musician with ego problems. But after Phil left, they had to just pack it up, because it really was not the same.
They did an awful job summing up Genesis in this segment. Not only did they select poor music choices, but they failed to mention Steve Hackett.
You discuss Supper's Ready, and the section they pick to talk about is "Willow Farm?" What the hell? You can tell these people didn't know a damn thing about Genesis, and they just quickly threw some bits of research together.
I agree. This is a terrible representation of early 70s Genesis. Half the segment is just playing "I Know What I Like" which was really their only true pop song with Gabriel and the one song that you could actually get tired of hearing after awhile. This video was obviously made by people who dont have a clue as to the true greatness of early Genesis.
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Agreed. I'm still struggling with the fact that they label "Foxtrot" as their "most successful album to date." Successful along what lines? Sales, I doubt it, because Genesis' bigger sales didn't come along until their pop years, and they didn't even mention "Selling England by the Pound," which had their first charting single. Progressive merit, maybe? Again, their was still some time left for them to pull out some creative stuff ("Selling England," "The Lamb").
As usual, Steve Hackett not mentioned in the segment yet his genius, unique style and careful contributions for me made Genesis so special. He is still a genius and then some!
I always felt that the early Genesis(Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Hackett, and Collins) and mid Genesis (Banks, Rutherford, and Collins) were both very good bands, in their own respective genres. I feel there were 2 high points of genesis: SEBTP and Invisible Touch. Those in my opinion were the high points for skill and creativity. The New Genesis(Calling all Stations) gets a lot of crap from fans.. I feel in another 2 albums, they would have found their new niche and really been good....
Instead they fired the new singer and went on hiatus. I felt they should have continued and tried to make it work. Certainly, they had nothing to prove....
You did not mention Selling England By The Pound and Invisible Touch in the same sentence. Or did you?. Easily the most loved and the most hated albums for a lot of Genesis' fans (me included). And what was so creative and skillfull in the latter. Please explain.
The ppl that hate Invisible Touch, hate it because it's shallow and pop. But that's the thing isn't it? It's a whole different genre. I love prog Genesis, it's epic moods and roller coaster storylines are wonderful for road trips, but I can't listen to Supper's Ready on the way to work. There isn't time to get into it and appreciate it. That's why some of the later albums were good. song like Driving the last spike and Domino serve as easier music to listen to.
So that's the explanation. It's important because is shallow and is Pop. Well Genesis' music was never shallow and allways edgy. So I really can't see the thing. Well, I respect your opinion, but inmensely disagree with it. There were bands (Marillion, Asia) that incorporated a lighter sound to their works, without becomig a full blown Pop act.
It's a different genre that exists for a different reason. I actually hate most pop with a passion...but I feel like you're giving the album too little credit. That album still had some artistic value. Sure it's title track and a few others were very pop, but Domino and The Brazilian are proof that they were not done with experimentation. The reason I credit that album so much is that it was proof that Genesis could be a multigenre band. It was the pinnacle of their music as pop. it was still
Invisible Touch - the high point of Genesis? I know it's subjective but the older stuff has much more skill and creativity in them than Invisible Touch.
They became generic and pop wussies with that album. SEBTP = genius. Inv. Touch=garbage.
Look, I didn't come here to start a fight or to defend anything. Invisible Touch WAS a high point of their career, and it was a high point for a completely different reason. If you wont consent to skill or creativity, you have to realize that it was a high point for the simple fact that it was their most successful album.
SEBTP was my other pick for a high point, but that was out of personal preference. It could have just as easily been the lamb...
maybe, personally I've always felt "wind and wuthering" was their worst album. Idk what it is about it, just didn't like it very much at all, no real stand out tracks...just my opinion tho ;]
I've listened to this band since I was a small child. They've had a huge influence on me. Now I'm in a prog band and I can some what understand how difficult it must have been for them. I've played many shows over the last 5 years with this band and we're just now starting to get a following.
Tony banks what a great musician but horrible person to not even mention Hackett.
And Phil just never got Peter's stage presence. That's what front men did back then, and that's how they got extra attention. Whatever you can do to get an advantage in the music scene you have to do.
I sure hope that's the case, because they were great in a great band together. I just assumed since it was produced by him and he wasn't fond of Hackett that it could have been his fault not mentioning him.
It´s true! Best records of genesis where record when Steve Hackett was still there (like Selling England..., Foxtrot, Nursery Crime, A trick of the tail) In fact, though I like what they did after Steve was gone, they never reached again that high.
What about Steve Hackett?

Some of those costumes are still being used by the Genesis tribute band "Musical Box" If you ever get a chance to see them ...GO!
Even Mike Rutherford agreed they are as good as the original band from the early 70's.
