@swizzle2012 The language changes because they are doing just enough English for the audience to make out the plot--but keeping the bulk of it in German. Alfredo is supposed to be an Italian opera singer so he gets a few phrases in Italian.
A singable translation of this song is for "Drink, my darling, drink to me, drink to all that used to be," but the German words mean something closer to "Drink, loved one, quickly, drinking makes the eyes shine." So they kept the original language.
With all kind intentions, the word is spelled "complement." So funny I had to make a similar correction yesterday. BTW, what form of bass do you play? My colleague is a double bass player.
@lskarin Disclaimer: "Absolutely no spell check feature was harmed during the formation of this missive" (thanks for the note, and I do know better... I just do things in a hurry sometimes.)
I have been playing the upright since about age 11, about 38 years. Got my start in bluegrass and old-time fiddle style, and progressed to swing and gypsy jazz. It's a ton of fun, and I couldn't imagine life without it. I play a 1937 (first year model) Kay Upright.
Your seeing probably the funniest version ever produced. Some of the ariettas are not as pure as they should be but the wonderful fun of it transcends everything.
why does the language keep changing?

This is Amazing!
Of course Miss Kiri is awesome, but O'Neill is spot on, and they compliment each other perfectly.
It's like a breath of fresh air!

This operetta is fabulous and this is by far the best version I have seen.
Althought the recent production by the RNCM was great fun and appealled to everyone as it was entirely in English.
