  • " C lassi Indeed "

  • well i've been trying to play this for years and still cant get the timing right grrrr love the tune well makes me happy!!!! thank you john williams for this beautiful tune :)

  • 0:9 to 0:13 is he actually playing that? i am trying to learn it and, all i can say is it looks like he is just adding in that sound or has someone else playing it, because, HIS HAND ONLY MOVES TO THE NEXT CHORD you dont have the songs signature sound in his movement, please help me this is almost making me SCREAM! ;(

  • @MajorMuffinMinecraft I think the sound is out of sync with the video.

  • @armstrongbrosband Actaully no i have learnt it now ^^ My music sheet was wrong the music is perfectly in sync with the video he just uses his pinkie instead of going from the 7th fret to the 4th he used his pinkie to hit another note lol ^^

  • @MajorMuffinMinecraft Yeah, I'm trying to learn this song also...can't read sheet music though. Just going by tabs.

  • wish I can play like hem !

    Beautiful how he playing

  • I was learning this piece as a kid when I packed in the guitar. Must've been about 16 and started working on the building sites. Really, really difficult. The only bit I can still play is between 1:00 and 1:12

  • 카바티나. 성탄절 아침 지하철에서, 간질거리는 목을 참으며, 멍하니, 어디로 가는지 모를 기차였으면 하고.

  • My hand feels like i've been wankin for 10 hours after playing that song on guitar...XD

  • @stuartbroon91 Omg that made me laugh when i read that!;D

  • Yeah, Cookie to the life.

  • why not?

  • i think its normal for a 13 yr old listening to this xD

  • love it

  • Hmm yes, not as funny though as Peter Cooke but he's a handsome guy!

  • he looks like people in old times

  • Seems like it!

  • Is this the same man that did the Jurassic Park, E.T, Harry Potter, Schindler's List, Starwars soundtracks and won 5 oscars?

  • @LacobrigusRomanicus no different john williams

  • @LacobrigusRomanicus carl verheyen did a lot of star wars music, go check his bio out, he has worked on so many films over the years from cars 2 to mission impossible, he is a very talented musician, and he plays the guitar better than anyone I have seen, he makes hard things look easy

  • @LacobrigusRomanicus No that's John Williams the composer.

  • @LacobrigusRomanicus Definitely nope!! That John Williams is a wonderful composer in tne "neo-romantic" style, reminiscent of Waagner's more tonal styles and Richard Stauss....John Williams the awesome guitar player is not a composer - although he does some KILLER arrangements and adaptations for guitar!!

  • Beautiful! :)

  • Nothing like Peter Cook.

  • I loved this piece the first time I heard it and still do! Magic!

  • You're really lucky, or should I say blessed @ skitchcraig to have learned and experienced the enjoyment of performing and even more so; teaching this wonderful masterpiece to your students! It's a thrill of a lifetime I should say. This classic movie blockbuster themesong is just one of the main reasons why I am going back to guitar playing again and hopefully keep doing it for good.

  • I learned this exact arrangement from the sheet music when I was 12 or 13, ten years later I was teaching it to my own pupils and now 30 years later I can still enjoy playing it. A great arrangement perfect for solo guitar.

  • Is this the same John Williams who wrote the Star Wars music and many other motion picture classics?

  • @TheGreatShidax No, different one !

  • Awesome...

  • What seems 'out of tune' is actually 'wow' and 'flutter.' This recording was done on old VCR tape. This tape stretches a bit over time, producing fluctuations in pitch. This might appear that Williams is 'out of tune.' He wasn't.

  • @sra97ster I wish I could have heard it live. I can get past the poor recording and feel the original masterpiece.

  • it is just a man with a guitar, but able to sound the world.

  • this song always make me feel really good

  • ...just made me speechless...

  • oh love you cavatina

  • The Great John Williams...what's more to say!

  • to many mistakes in this take

  • Es una guitarra que habla.

  • A true classic and a masterful performance.

From the first Secret Policeman's Ball in 1979 I think, the movie The Deerhunter had been released the previous year so the piece was world famous (previously it had been famous in England for appearing on Tony Hart's children's arts programme as background music to 'The Gallery' where you could send in your artwork and hope to see it displayed)

  • Good, muito bom mesmo, parabéns!

  • masterpiece!

  • Reminds me of the day I enlisted back in 1974.

  • is it just me, or do all guitars back then sound a little out of tune?

  • @SilkySkillsUnited

All guitars are naturally out of tune because they have straight frets. Only a true temperament fretboard is perfectly in tune.

  • @HasaanFatal What do you mean by 'true temperament?' Do you mean radiused or curved frets/fretboard? Just curious you know:-)

  • @ianrkav The frets on a true temperament fretboard are bent into bizarre shapes to give perfect intonation on every single fretted note. Straight frets only give you an approximation of the notes, but there are always a few that sound slightly off, especially higher up the neck.

  • @HasaanFatal You cannot get perfect intonation on a fretted instrument that's true, this is why violin's and cello's etc are fretless. I have seen some guitar's with almost 's' shaped frets higher up the neck, maybe that was a 'true temperament' fretboard I was looking at but didn't know:-)

    Ok thanks for that:-)

  • a great guitarist

  • Thanks , this makes a lot more sense, including which Williams. Doesn't take away from the absolute beauty of the performance though!

  • beautifully done, though it states "playing at Avery Fisher hall, New York on Oct 25, 2011. Since today is October 17th, 2011, I'm guessing he had a time machine?

  • @Paschalboy No - YouTube is mistakenly trying to tell you that John Williams will be playing at Avery Fisher Hall on October 25, 2011. It's how they try to make revenue by posting these videos. The mistake is that the composer and conductor John Williams ('Raiders of the Lost Ark', "E.T."...) is the one performing at Lincoln Center, not this man, the Australian guitarist.

  • @paullavan2011 - You reminded me, art for kids on t.v. Tony Hart was great, he would show the children's pictures one by one in 'The Gallery' while this music played. The combination was a killer. I was torn because I really wanted to see the art work but didn't like to hear the music because it made me cry. When it was time for the gallery I'd think....oh no......!!!

  • fuck

    yeah.

  • it's very good

    very beautiful

  • it's very good

  • Ohhhhhh, it's just too beautiful.

  • nope fucking sucks, andres segovia is better and so is everyone else

  • @roflswamp6 Pretty sure you've never picked up a classical guitar before...And by insulting the arranger himself, you've just became a twat.

  • @roflswamp6 hahaha,you're so funny,I bet you can't play better than him,can you?

  • shred, sweep, and tap you think thats hard try this

  • It's a hard piece to play on a guitar. I've tried it.

  • Well, it dosent get much better than this

  • toca fenomenal estupendo pero no se pierdan el video del cuarteto arsis cuatro guitarras tocan con muchisimo gusto un saludo.

  • I think there are better performances over there but anyway this is a fantastic one :-)

  • @pipixcan69

the smallman is an amazing guitar!! very dark with incredible sustain!! I've played both (fleta and smallman, both original and not sons) if I could get either, I would prefer the smallman!!

btw, I play a Jacobson, so I'm no deprived:)

i'm not a professional guitarist, just had a really good teacher, that had both.

  • rjconnolly64......were u searching for 'french footballers with beards' and stumbled across this? :0i

  • This was the original music used in 'The Gallery' on the legendary Tony Hart's show, I was five years old when I was first transfixed by this music (1976).

    Still great.

ps - respects to Johnny Morris, Johnny Ball, and Simon Groom.

  • I clicked because I thought the title said Cantina...

  • like all pro tennis players discover - someone younger and faster comes along and "takes the crown" . Ana Vidovic may play this piece neater and faster than John WIlliams does but lets not forget that it was John WIlliams who turned Stanley Myers piano piece into a beautiful guitar melody in the first place.

  • Hi founding father

  • 36 of the thick people,, it is just sublime then again and again,,

    36 of just wrong

  • nice playing....its a fun piece to play.Enjoyed.

  • Wonderful so lovely!

  • This is from Secret Policeman's Ball yes ? I had it on an old VHS and must have worn out this performance 1:00 to 1:41 .... God his hands were beautiful

  • One of the saddest songs ever made..

  • @bloodtimer Yes, I agree--from one of the most tragic periods of modern US history. This piece interprets that period very well indeed.

  • @TheMimzee Exactly, I mean in some parts it is mildly uplifting, but only for a second as if to represent there was little good times in that time period. Speaks more then a song with words.

  • Why did he have to change to Greg Smallman guitars??? the Fletas were so much better !!

  • Lovely playing.TY for posting.

  • ESPERABA UNA MEJOR INTERPRETACION DE ESTE GRAN MAESTRO PERO NO QUE LASTIMA

ESO SE TOCA UN POCO MAS DESPACIO, NO TAN A TEMPO Y CON MAS DINAMICAS CON MAS SENTIMIENTO

  • Some people are way back in the evolution line.

  • This song made 34 people feel like playing Russian Roulette.

  • He makes it look so deceptively easy while it is tremendously difficult...

  • Who are the 34 morons who don't like a master performing a masterwork?? Hands up so you may be culled to improve the species...

  • @dopeybuthappy So True a Master,. i had the privilege to watch him Live in Preston Guild Hall many years ago. Genius !!

  • @dopeybuthappy 36 morons need to be taken out of the gene pool...

  • @dopeybuthappy

    indeed, and I will help...

  • @dopeybuthappy ...indeed, and I will help,...

Saludos, viejo!

  • Flawless performance of a very beautiful song and he does look a bit like Peter Cook, God bless him.

  • 34 people can play this so much better.....?

  • i don't really like the part start from 3:21

  • @Pikangu hoydi hoy hoy thats wen it ends your hilarious!

  • @Pikangu At first i was like " How's that possible! and it has 8 likes! and then i realized and i was like... oohh okay i agree hahaha nice one!

  • 34 idiots have watched this.

  • 34 dislikes! these people never watched the deer hunter, poor them.

  • @seba123neo I've never watched it, but i like it.

  • I had the original recording--the intonation/tuning problem is in this video, not his performance. And it's not the same person as the composer.

  • same guy...lol... composer and guitarist.

  • Is this 'the' John Williams? The composer?

  • @Incizor1 no . this is 'the' john williams , the guitarist :D

  • poignant.

  • I love this! Beautifully played music!!! :)

  • pitch fork needed

  • is beautiful, the deer hunter soundtrack, make me cry

  • his dynamics are more perfect than perfect

  • @vaibach Play the song the way it has to be and Ana plays too fast. You can listen to her video "watch?v=FOXAo8GHQO8&feature=related". It is Estudio no 11(Etude No 11-Villa Lobos). The song was written to be played in "Lento", which means very slowly. Ana's is good, better than segovia. But, still JW is the best. When you play something too fast, especially for songs that need to be played expressively. when JW plays, i can hear him breathe, even the way he sings a song.

  • yeah...everything sounds better in analog in my opinion. a little warped, but very warm and comforting to me.

  • I'd love to learn this but it would be a challenge!

  • I play the classical guitar and currently uploaded to youtube.

Please visit my account and listen to my cavatina.

  • this piece is timeless. the music is so laconic, sad at times, others not. i find it accessible, you can learn this piece, yet to really master it, its a challenge, but one i hope to do one day. in the meantime i shall continue to enjoy johns awesome virtuosity

  • When I was a kid and this movie came out, I must have seen it 20 times.(1st.wkend) For the Story & the Music of this song. It's why I am learning to play myself.

    Cos.

  • He would not have used an out-of-tune instrument. Obviously the problem is the quality of the sound in this decades old recording.

  • @superman11978 I kind of like it more with its little sound imperfections cus it makes it more expresive just like a drawing with out any distortions

  • @superman11978 Problem? I like the out of tune sound!!!

  • @superman11978 i dont know but i think that the "out of tune" sound adds a bit of character, i kinda like it.

  • he doesn't just play the guitar, he talks to it and it responds. When he is playing this piece he looks as if he is talking to an old friend of his...just his expression.....beautiful music....really.

  • this music is THE music to listen, and the movie "the dead hunter" it 's in all memories with greats actors and actrisses

  • @centory25 dead hunter? you mean the deer hunter?

  • @lynchdemartini : oups, sorry, I mean "the deer hunter" , you're right, really sorry :)

  • @LilWayneGod

LW is rap music. This is crafted music not song put on an assembley line like LW, how anyone can dislike this artwork is beyond a joke. Pop and Hip Hop music needs to be flushed down a toilet and people need to apreciate this more. Sorry about the spelling error folks.

  • 曲もジョンの演奏も美しい!

    芸術は人を高めていくものだと改めて思いました。

    音楽は人類の素晴らしい宝物です。

  • The sound is knackered. End of.

  • I like the Stanley Myers version more

  • This is going to seem ridiculous, but, this is not up to JWs usual standard, some of the timing is out, a tad, and some of the notes are rough / strained. I'm not panning him for all time, that again, would be ridiculous, but I've heard him do this far better, and some years after this take.

  • @Joshua12345 I agree :) I have heard better (real flawless) versions, live and on CD. Hey, this makes him more human, I guess :) Nevertheless, I enjoyed this, too.

  • Love it :)

  • I really did not like the part after 3:20

  • @LilWayneMetalGod nice trolling, buddy

  • I believe this was used in the 1970's movie The Deer Hunter.

  • The sound is muddy.

  • Is this THE John Williams, the composer of so many great film scores?!

  • @DNchap1417 Nope. They're two totally different geniuses. =)

  • Good job disliking this one...

  • Such emotion! Such a master!

  • if u luv it keep sayin it--i luv it

  • @LilWayneMetalGod You sicken me beyond belief.

  • never studied guitar only piano--too beautiful for me to describe-- would like this at my funeral

  • @LilWayneMetalGod

Have you seen Wayne play his guitar? LOL.

  • @LilWayneMetalGod I can't believe you actually compared Lil Wayne to John Williams. There's a level of skill and talent from Williams that LW can never reach.

  • @awwxxsugarr yeah!!

  • @LilWayneMetalGod Lilly Wayne is rap garbage, that represents the poverty of continual black ignorance in America, the refusal to appreciate significant art and culture, and the deliberate dumbing down of America.

  • @LilWayneMetalGod And they say ignorance is bliss?! Well it's fucking annoying for other people!

  • Watched The Deer Hunter again today. This song is sooo beautiful, and makes the movie even more saddening. Vietnam was a horrible war, and affected many families. :'-(

  • @Crussman499 I watched it last nite, and again today with my husband--who had never seen it. I agree with everything you said, and just want to add one thing--no one knew about PTSD back then, and soo many soldiers had breakdowns--nothing was done for them. When they returned to the US they were treated like garbage! Hopefully, there's a lesson in that somewhere.....

  • just learned this a couple of weeks ago. I underestimated the dificulity of this song. waaaay underestimated!

  • 26 people are 3 year old kids who accidentally clicked the dislike button.

  • 26 people have epically failed trying to learn this.

  • Sometimes dont matter how good you are in technical things . Beacuse if you ll give the 100% of your heart it ll sound better then 100% of your technical potential and only 30% of your heart :)

  • Who the in the name of FUCK could dislike this?

  • Nice Job....I have done a my version...check out.... Pipixcan69

  • my guitar gland just did a jizzload

  • remind me of my dead dog.

    sleep well benny.

  • @nommynupple

    Haha!

  • @nommynupple lol xd

  • the deer hunter is the first fillm where i sat for the entire end credits, simply due to this song playing. when this song was played after all of the drama, the emotional turmoil from the film this song came out in such a haunting way

  • muy hermosa :) my brother plays this for me all the time :)

  • where can i find sheet music to this WITHOUT tabs?

  • I first heard this on Vision on The Gallery. Then was a way on hols when the album Bridges i think come out and i had to wait till getting home to play it love them times back then i was 11 or 12.Happy times

  • What a stern looking man. Very depressing indeed.

  • Are there 2 John Williams' because there is the film composer who is American and this one who is Australian and I was confused. I think this is a different person to the one who composed Harry Potter.!!!

  • @weenerfier yes there are two John Williams.

  • @weenerfier There's also John Williams the oboe player and John Williams the accordionist.

    Musical lot aren't they!
