I ride single speed for aggressive long rides and i as well forget technique, I as well notice my feet flatten when beginning a hill. I desire to climb like this consistently so i shall pay closer attention. thanks oh and ya the pointed toe is helpfull
I learn something new about the pointed toes on the uphills. I ride in northern part of new jersey and the hills have wipe me out. Now I think I have a new way of dealing with them. Cycling is even more thinking than when I rode 30 years ago. Also, the seat issue has been a problem for me. So I purchase a Specialized Body Geometry seat. This should work for me.
hey, if my legs get tired i usually use the easy gear and spin out but when i do that to recover i sometimes get cramps in my calves...what am i doing wrong?
I know this but...of you are traveling at a decent pace...unclipping one (which I do) and standing on the other (which I do) doesn't exactly stop u on a dime to dismount. It's an unsolvable problem because in reality you are attached to the bike. Clipless pedals...(I have speedplays as well as SPD-SLs) are made for country roads and closed coarse racing. Problem is that I need to ride the bike to where I can really use the advantage of the clipless pedal but, on the way it's damn tough.
I have ridden for a many many years. I still have not figured out a solution to a bike fit problem....if my seat is too low I don't get proper pedal mechanics and when I am in a high seat position with good pedal mechanics, my feet don't touch the ground so...unclipping and stopping is an adventure every time. (I use both Speedplays and SPD-SLs--2 bikes) Is it a genetic leg length deal or I just don't know what I'm doing for many years? I wind up sacrificing a little on both ends and go in be
@sawink you should use the high seat position. When you unclip to stop you should first unclip one foot, then come of the saddle standing on your other foot, then you can reach the ground with the unclipped foot when you're slowing down (so you shouldn't sit on the saddle while stopping).
My secret for climbing hills is always put your best effort where it will do the most good. Going up a steep hill full out or at a comfortable pace will most likely on net you only a few miles per hour difference between the two if the hill is really steep. Save your energy for the top of the hill where your increased effort will provide a longer lasting benefit as you head down the hill and maintain your cruising speed longer because you saved the best for last.
hey I'm going to get one of those kinetic trainers, but I can't decide if I should get the rock and roll one or the road machine one that it looks like you are using there. Is it totally fine to ride standing up on the road machine? I've never used a trainer before. If I don't need the rock&roll for that then I will just get the road machine.
@JoelTGM i have a static trainer. but not a kinetic. you can stand up while riding on either but the rock and roll just gives it a more 'realistic' feel. less boring, more riding (training) :)
practice. Helps a lot, being a bigger guy when I hit the hills. Yes, all workouts available 24/7 on-demand, for cheap at Cyclo-CLUB If you want them with a training plan, go with prem or annual. Enjoy.
This was great. Some great tips that I will be incorporating into my training, because yes, you are right, I'm fed up with getting dropped going up hills! Cheers mate.
@Greddybear You've probably already figured something out by now, but I would advise "The cyclist's training bible" by Joe Friel. Great, classic training book.

Ironic (well not really) that forefoot (proper) running is similar to proper cycling technique. Everything follows millions of years of evolution without couch cushions for 80 year old on your feet or engine powered (motor) cycles
listen mate... today im 35yrs old... the last time i took a ride it was when i was 10... recently i started having problems with my back and i started to find it very difficult to play football so i bought a mountain bike... in just 2 months i can do 40km... i started with 10 - 15km a day to get some confidence with the bike... then i started to take some hills as experts here advise.
i can't afford the type of bike you have but i have a mountain bike that i have had for a while nd i love riding my bike since i was 1 years old the prob is i haven't been on it in a bout 2 years and i want to be on my bike this year the issue i have is i want do develope skills as oppose to joy riding what would you recommend starting off with like may a plan or maybe a book i should read?
@D1rec7or i know how to ride a bike but the prob is if you don't know how to do shit proper you can throw ur back out of worse damge you knees like i did
this vid sounds good in theory but in practice it's not possible to achieve that cadence on a steep climb.
The cadence you see in his vid -> half it. No regular bike has a gear that easy. I live in the alps in France.

yea, point your toes. then later, when your knees hurt, you will know why.
justrob021 3 months ago
@justrob021 Yeah I agree, I'd rather move back in the saddle and keep the feet flat; pointed toes = bad knees!
