I've never heard this song and I've been a hard core Genesis fan for 30 years. Awesomeness!!! Thanks so much for sharing this tune! Love it! Cool finding out that this is a 'lost' song that contributed to Los Endos.
if they'd only used this as the intro to Los Endos, imagine how much more classic (and it already is!) Trick of the Tail would have been.... fantastic song! (before Phil Collins decided to ruin it all, but that's another story :)
Perhaps, Genesis never showed the spiritual hook of its musicianship so clearly as in "It's Yourself". And I think "Beloved Summer" is still THE title for it. Not a summer from remote past, but a very advanced one, away in the future, which humankind will reach when it'll be ready.
Unfortunately, the American 45 of "Your Own Special Way" that I bought when it came out has "In That Quiet Earth" on it...it just cuts into it...wish this would have been on it instead...
@stuffedsonic What I read was that they needed a way to open Los Endos, and they didn't really have one. So they fetched the sound from this discarded song.
There are at least three different versions of this song. This is one of the versions that missing a verse.
This version is from the Archive 2 Box set; it has an early fade (the original single actually ends, it doesn't fade out). The 1976--82 Box set version has an extra verse before it goes into that psychedelic ending, but that version also fades out.
Although I am a massive G fan, I can understand why this never made it onto an album, as too disjointed. Thank god they salvaged parts for Los Endos!!
@ripples01 agreed, in a way. It would not have fit on trick, cauz it sounds to much like their next album. but tacked on the end of wind and wuthering i think it could of worked (as the final song). BUT i understand where your comment is coming from.
@ninthtf Could you upload it?? I would REALLY like to hear it all! And by the same time i'd really like if you could send it to me by e-mail so i can put it on my MP3 too!!!
A weak song compared to the rest of the great Trick of the Tail LP. The best bit is the section that made it to Los Endos. Sounds like a Wind and Wuthering out-take!! The end of it sounds like the chemical brothers psychedelic stuff!!
this would have fit snugly onto "Trick Of The Tail." "Los Endos" incorporated parts of "Squonk" and "Dance On A Volcano", so who's to say that it didn't incorporate parts of "It's Yourself" and not the other way around? One way to look at it.
I have been a Genesis fan for a long time. In college a guy let me borrow his 45 of this. It was a flip side on "your Own Secial Way." I was spell bound. Especially with the part from Los Endos. We kept arguing:. Which came first, this version or the one used on Trick of The Tail? Unfortunately, the portable frig. put a giant pop on the tape I used to record it on. I still have that giant POP!
@Sparrowhawk1161 According to Hugh Fielder's 'The Book of Genesis', It's Yourself was recorded first. Los Endos originally didn't have the intro, so they later decided to take the middle portion of IY and splice it into LE's intro.
@ksjoyjespeace Hmm, here's the thing. Tony Banks is the guy who in an interview described Phil as having a "James Taylor" side to him as early as More Fool Me on Selling England by the Pound, and then continuing thru A Trick fo the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. If you set a side the psychadelic instrumentation on this song and just listen to the first couple of minutes it's there for an objective ear to hear. Who am I to argue with Tony Banks?
This sounds very much like the territory they would soon explore on W&W and ATTWT. It would have been a bit of a let-down on Trick though; too dark and meandering. The best part of that song is the bit they used for Los Endos!
@hegelec There really was no place to put this song on Trick of the Tail, because they would have needed a heavier song to break it up, which they apparently didn't have. The Trick track listing went hard, soft, hard, soft, hard, soft, etc. You get the point.
@sandro28grizz You've no doubt heard the interview w/ Phil about how they (him, Tony and Mike) would rate their own songs, then place them in that order = A good, B ok, and C not so good. They would arrange the album in that way. Good song followed by ok song followed by another good song followed by not so good etc.etc. A...B...A...C...A...B? If that helps, sounds like what your saying. I think this is possibly why they have so many left over songs. Could have received the "C" rating.
never heard that one before, in one interview Banks said that ABACAB was the original structure to the song Abacab before the rewrote it but kept the title.
@CluckerMcBawk The reason why they put the middle bit in Los Endos is because they liked it so much they wanted to have it part of the medley. They believed that because it was B-side not many people would bother to listen to it, so they made a little preview of this track to open Los Endos. Good idea because now, this track is massively rare but people can hear a bit of it in a more common track.

@jhillst Well it definitely makes sense down't it. I wonder if this song was a tribute for Hacket because he left? Sure is a lot of Hacket in it?
Sparrowhawk1161 1 year ago
@Sparrowhawk1161 Hackett played on this song. He didn't leave until about a year and a half after this was recorded.

@sandro28grizz Sounds about right. Wind and Wuthering came out...what 1976? with "Trick". So it makes sense. Thanks.

Nice Song, I have put Its yourself and Los Endos together, Very funny :D
But by the way, this is the Archive 2 Version, the Italian Single Version is 20seconds longer, and at the end, you could paste in Mad man moon :D
