Also I hope that I can listen to a topic of the conditions of work environments among our nations, Australia, the US and Japan. Any kinds of criticism or affirmations are welcome.
@Hikosaemon Oops! So sorry. The flag that you show at first part of these videos seems Australia's for me so that I couldn't tell them apart. I'm a stupid guy, sorry.
@tattsun999 no worries at all. Most Kiwi and Aussie kids under 8 years old can't tell the difference. Frankly, NZ's flag in particular is stupid to me. I think you are in the majority being confused by it :)
I want you guys to talk about the Japanese education systems or the methods, and also the differences among your mother countries, Australia and the US; which part of the methods among us is better and worse?
I've been backtracking through these episodes and I must say that you and Victor complement each other well. His style is very gregarious while you provide the staid wit that balances out into an effective duo. I hope this series develops some strong legs; it would be nice to see how far this format can go months, maybe even years from now.
Great first episode, guys! Are all of the transitions you used done live or were they done after the fact? I didn't see anyone pushing any buttons as you were talking so I'm guessing the latter.
@hmatsuuchi All the transitions were done in the editing software that came with VODBURNER although the software proposes transitions automatically based on the sound - so it is really more just a case of tweaking - very easy to use.
btw id be interested to hear how the foreign population/presence has changed since the quake. Might have been said already but different Murakami. "Coin Locker Babies" was written by Murakami Ryu and is entirely fictional like u said. lol but nonetheless i think there was still issues about this back in the 60s? 70s? Either way this was a hilarious watch!! U guys jump from topic to topic so randomly! Very entertaining haha :D
ROFLMAO catholic punishment makes for great athiests LOL I consider myself more of an agnostic myself went thru the same crap you did lol good times. I lol'd a lot during this was awesum. a bit morbid at times but full of edutainment. :-)
These conversations are really cool to watch. It would be cool to hear you guys talk about careers and moving for them, or choosing to start a career vs travel right after college. Keep this up you guys rock.
I like the format... kinda like sitting at an izakaya having a beer. But, could edit it down to 10min or less so I don't have schedule an appt just to watch?! ;-)
@gasto5 You've misunderstood TkyoSam. He was being somewhat sarcastic. He was trying to highlight that he thought the two women had very stupid logic, as they did not like the idea of taking the pill to prevent pregnancy but had no problems with getting abortions if they became pregnant through unprotected sex.
"Finest oyajis Japan has ever saw in the media." So says the Oldenyouth, head oyaji of the nonexistent YMBD (Youtube Movie Database).
Suggestion for the next epi: A comparison of different Japanese peoples' in terms of culture, mentality and behaviour. For e.g. how Tokyoites, Nagoyans, Shizuokans differ from Osakans, Okinawans and vice versa. Good job. Oldenyouth.
@Oldenyouth I like the topic suggestions - I guess it calls in part for playing on regional stereotypes, since I don't know many regions first hand, but I think it's a great topic, just to give people an appreciation of the kind of cultural variations you get within Japan.
@Hikosaemon Wahey! This could be great for a future episode once there is more info about this specific topic. I got another idea for epi. 2: J-entertainment...like the blog you did few days ago. I find it interesting and also a comparison between J-entertainment and Western ones. I could never quite get a grasp on local entertainmennt here. I trust you and V-man would do an entertaining discussion about the J-entertainment :D Cheers man.
I heard the government didn't want to aprove the pill becuase of the declining population & they didn't want to do something that would only aid in its decline.
@MicknFumi There are lots of conspiracy theories about it - fact is the pill was submitted for regulatory approval in the 1960s, and not approved until the 1990s, AFTER Viagra had been approved in just a few months from application. There were valid concerns about the risks of the pill - 5% of women risk life threatening clots from it, people were unsure if it could cause cancer or heart disease, etc. But there were clearly cultural and political factors also in play on this.
@MicknFumi I'm sure that came into it. As did fear of the pill as being associated with the women's political liberation/feminist movements of many western countries.
AHHHH from the perspective of a fellow male, what is your opinion on people fantasizing about rape in japanese media? Do you think it is wrong/normalizes the idea, or do you think it's harmless as long as it's merely fantasized and not acted upon? Also, did you ever find yourself not speaking up when you wanted to due to social conditioning? (not implying that is a bad thing) and how did you deal with the conflicting feelings afterwards?
@shotamerican Crikey! :S I guess this is the kind of topic I would squirm about but Victor would dive in headlong to, which makes it a good topic. The social conforming thing is really all about peer pressure in many ways, but still, I think those are both good topics. Thanks!
@Hikosaemon :: yeah sorry bout that, i didn't realize how weird that had sounded until after i typed it. i recently reviewed a comic that had a kid fantasizing about it, and i read a huge debate on whether or not it was a bad thing. i never touched that kind of subject cause i'm a bit confused about complicated stuff, so i thought i would pass it along to you all LOL you don't have to talk about it, though. i think i was just thinking out loud, oops!
This is a really good show. Only thing I could ask for is that Hikosaemon speaks so quietly and there is background noise in his area it takes all of my energy to hear what he is saying. ><
You just had to suddenly talk about pregnant people and abortions eh? I just tried to make my boyfriend INFORM HIMSELF about different ways of contraceptives, and he absolutely refused, trusts only the pill ONLY, and would throw me down the stairs and punch me in the stomach if I ever got pregnant from him, too. He doesn't see what's wrong with this and I don't know how to explain it to him. There's nothing anyone can do to change these people.
@ComicPlague i honestly don't know how to handle this situation, since he's not just someone i could easily detach myself from! situations aren't as easily taken care of as people make it seem, especially if you're in a submissive position
@aJazzyFeel Well, the topic came up, and it is a valid topic. Japan was I believe one of the last countries to legalize the pill, and asprin in the OECD, and this reflects on different attitudes - Japanese are very risk sensitive about the pill, while many westerners are, as you say, quite ignorant of the general issues (side effects of messing with hormones like that) and serious issues (1 in 20 can't take it because of life threatening blood clots). I think it's a valid point of comparison.
Holy hell, that DOES sound like a creepy shrine...
Great show, though, lol. I'd like to hear about some of the different kinds of food in Japan in an upcoming episode! And maybe the public transportation too, Japan has an awesome rail system.
I always enjoy your videos. I would like to hear a discussion about living in Japan as a non Japanese, and any advice you may have for foreigners who are looking to work/live in Japan.
I agree with Ozzy78. I am preparing to travel to Japan and I've heard that there is not really racial isolation, but more of a weariness of foreigners in Japan. Maybe mention some of the stereotypes commonly used against Gaijin as it is.
i wish i was in that converstion with you, i got so mutch to say, hey why not creating a place where people can talk about what you say after the episode? youtube is nice but very limited
im sure that when you came to japan it was invitable that you feel the "im a forner.. i may not be wanted,,, they are looking at me 0_0", do you still have this feeling from time to time or believe that its part true?, acually here it is, it would be great to hear about your first time in japan, what you felt and why you desided to stay
great idea and episode! can't wait for the next episode. possible topic suggestion: Pros and cons of being a foreigner in Japan (all types of foreigners like Chinese, Korean, Indian, American, British, etc.)
Can't wait for the next video. Fascinating insight in a stream of thought conversation. Interesting to hear your thoughts on childrearing here in Japan. From my experience in schools, I see two extremes: utterly spoiled, wild children with no sense of discipline whatsoever, or timid, rigid, lifeless zombies with no sense of self. I'd love to see a happy medium. But that's just my own culture bound perspective. -This was funny as hell though. Looking forward to ep 2! Cheers.
@BobbyHyattVideos I'm afraid not, but I went and got a new webcam over this, with a nice mic on it that I hope will solve the problems on my end - I'll really make sure sound is much cleaner next time.
@Hikosaemon Great, I was just going to ask you about this, because the noise was a bit too much :) Btw I have a topic suggestion: Why is the Japanese so obsessed with cute?
Kids in Japan are still better than in North America, more the US than Canada, but morale and behavioral education shouldn't be so overlooked I think. Also teen mother is a pretty grimy show.
I'd love to hear about your ideas about 'haafu' Japanese children, what would be the best way to raise them, and how you feel about the term and (possible) stigma attached.
@Kirarachu It's funny you mention that, I left a comment on a video on this topic just this evening - it is the most recent vid in my favorites. In terms of raising, we really are still just going one day at a time, and in terms of stigma, haafu kids and foreigners are relatively commonplace in Tokyo, so it isn't an issue I am ever confronted with. But you are right, it might be a good topic to raise with Vic - thanks for the suggestion!
Great discussion, I especially enjoy hearing about the 'darker' side of Japan, like mizu shoubai, abortion, suicide, coin locker babies and so on. Keep up the good work!
Great to be a fly on the wall for one of your Skype chats. Though I enjoyed the whole video I was especially intrigued by your observations on moral education (or the lack thereof) in modern Japan. One of the best things about your collab is the mature, honest and very relaxed nature of your interaction. The dialogue is made especially interesting with the addition of illustrative life anecdotes and quality, R-rated humor. This is the real deal in my book! Looking forward to Ep. 2. ~Kurt :-)
No, I agree. Because of the format, it's more like a talk show or a radio show and I feel like my attention span would be much more accepting of a longer format and was even anticipating a longer show. But I enjoyed none-the-less. Great stuff guys.
you dudes are Oyajis... was entertaing... wonder if ill get to this stage? probably will, i just have to look at kids with there pants around there ass, and feel the culture gap... but i also reconize we did similar things.... great to see you guys kickin some of the 'old dawg' knowledge.
The reason for the kids not respecting their parents is their parents fault. They were brought up with strict parents and went against raising their kids that way. They are paying for it now. Once the die is cast it can't be changed.
Why "two and a half Oyaji"? Is he two and a half times the size of you? Or is he playing Ashton and you play Charlie? :D

It is lower than U.S.A., the U.K., France, New Zealand, Canada.
It is higher than Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Spain. It was an old story for dozens of years that an abortion rate was high in Japan.

2. ~Kurt :-)

Excellent video, I´ve been waiting the whole week for it, you need to make these things longer though.

No, I agree. Because of the format, it's more like a talk show or a radio show and I feel like my attention span would be much more accepting of a longer format and was even anticipating a longer show. But I enjoyed none-the-less. Great stuff guys.

The reason for the kids not respecting their parents is their parents fault. They were brought up with strict parents and went against raising their kids that way. They are paying for it now. Once the die is cast it can't be changed.
