@motorhead11345 Lol, sorry didnt realise this was that funny :P It refers to the "big end" of the con rod that goes around the crank, as opposed to the "little end" that connects to the piston with a gudgeon pin.
Don't know if you have gotten an answer yet, but many modern cars have hydraulic lifters that can get sticky and fail with time. It might be something like that. My old Jetta used to tick a bit like that, but only at start up. Once oil pressure got up a bit things would loosen up and it'd quiet down. It did sound pretty bad, though; I agree with what others said -- don't drive it and don't rev it.
Possibly jumped time? idk about this motor, but some if your timing belt skips it offsets alot, while the computer may compensate, allowing your engine to run, it could be bashing your valves against your pistons as stated below. DO NOT DRIVE ANY VEHICLE WITH THIS KIND OF NOISE, and quit revving it......unless you have a disposable income and don't give a hoot about your car.....
This engine doesn't have hydraulic valve adjustment (automatic) but here, the valve clearance is set by plates that go between the camshaft and the... tappets?? I don't know for sure how it is called in English. My guess would be, for some reason one of those plates slipped out of its place, maybe it broke, or you revved your engine TOO high. For sure, let someone look after it QUICKLY and DON'T drive that car this way!!
its your camshaft......They are not properly adjust.....your camshaft...open the intake and exhaust and the spring release it....So when they are not all at same distance they make a crazy noise.....
When it makes noise like that, you turn it off and remove the head/ valve assembly to see what the hell's wrong. You do not run it and attempt to rev it or there will probably be one less serviceable M3 on the roads.
I love how people are diagnosing your car from a crappy YouTube video. Seriously? Have your car towed to a reputable shop that specializes in BMW's. As far as the "there's German technology" comment, let's see a similarly performing engine from an American or Japanese manufacturer go 300k miles without any issues...won't happen.
@MrJnande4176 my old 305 sbc had 280,000 miles before I yanked it in favor of a 350. There was nothing wrong with the 305, even raced it a few times before the 350. (slow as hell, but a good motor) so yeah, it happens. Never seen a BMW (or most new cars in general) stay on the road long enough for the motor to clock 300K.
one of your hydraulic lifters probably failed. not really a huge problem as reliability is concerned. but definently an annoying noise, and probably a little loss of power.
If the engine has been rebuilt, or even the cylinder head removed, you might want to check the timing chains. It could also be a hydraulic valve pusher that isn't getting enough oil (no valve clearance to check because it's hydraulic) . If the noise dissapears when the engine warms up > the oil becomes smoother and circulates better, or when the oil pressure rises on full load. Just a wild guess
oil turning into engine sludge can cause this nosie try engine flush and oil change and check your timming belt as it may be out causing valve to tap against piston if so new cylinder head and piston as every time it knocks its doing damage to the top of piston and valve
This generation of M3 has been known to have main bearing problems. I personally experienced this. Had to have new engine put in 2005 M3 due to bearing failure.
Ya get a intrepid. That is a really good car and I dont care what people may say about the car or its engine. There is nothing wrong with the 2.7 all you have to do is do the oil and your good.
yep def VANOS. its part of the engine that helps regulate the amount of gasoline actually let into each cylinder. operates with help from O2 sensor. and yeeaa, no way around fixing it. u let it go n ull have a super-fail and one real bad day sometime soon. search dr. vanos. but i doubt youd wana get into the engine
It's a common bmw failure, its the rod bearings that goes to hell, and then the valves are touching the piston heads. Don't buy bmw folks, just look at this classic.
@f14dsupertomcat1 it could be alot of things, it could be the sound of a spark that is jumping through air, the engine could have overheated and the piston could be damaged and hitting the cylender walls, maybe a bent valve rod and the cam is hitting the top of it. etc
Sounds like a valve is out of adjustment remove the rocker cover and see which one it is look for the keepers and any loose parts that should not be there
that sounds like a sticky tappet. if it has been left for a bit then it will do that. if not then just type in engine lubricant on ebay and buy it. it will loosen up the parts inside.
in case of the loud noise i guess the problem is a big end bearing,
But out of a vid it`s difficult to say, it is also possible that hydraulic lifters are gone or the piston is wobbling at td.

Your looking at taking the head off and re skimming the bores and putting a new piston in.
Take the ignition coil out one by one until the sound has gone, then you know which piston is causing the problem.
