  • in case of the loud noise i guess the problem is a big end bearing,

But out of a vid it`s difficult to say, it is also possible that hydraulic lifters are gone or the piston is wobbling at td.

  • @TheRina1990 these motors have solid lifters no hydralic

  • u have to push car too river fvck english IM NINJA !

  • This is a very easy fix, just unscrew oil cap and insert new M6 underneath. Screw down oil cap and it fixes it everytime !

  • Sounds like valve clearances badly need adjusting. If it takes shims a shim might even have popped out of place (if even possible on this engine).

  • BMW AND THEIR TICKING ALWAYS...

  • ...Who's there?

  • Whatever it is, your engine will get even more damage by running it like this. STOP reving it, take it apart and repair.

  • Valve?

  • Run a bearing? Mmm nice big scores in the crank, whatever it is, sounds expensive!

  • camshaft and for sure some valves. Driven to fast to soon with a cold engine.

  • Valves...

  • just normal... this is bmw.

  • Timming belt not on the mark :/

  • @xXACElongcon13HDXx there no timming belt its a chain...

  • oooh, not read all the pages, but that really does sound like piston slap.

Your looking at taking the head off and re skimming the bores and putting a new piston in.

Take the ignition coil out one by one until the sound has gone, then you know which piston is causing the problem.

    It's expensive :-(

  • normal for a bmw 100k and kaput

  • Sounds like a dodgy lifter or something with the rocker gear

  • *Insert liquid mechanic can to fix the problem.* rofl... i guess this car needs supreme gas and you filled it with ordinary gas...

  • sounds like a big end bearing has gone, but could be anything really. sounds like a huge repair bill in any case.

  • @chrisvarns ha ha "big end bearing", thats funny.... more commonly known as crank and/or rod bearings.... but i got a good kick outa that. lol

  • @motorhead11345 Lol, sorry didnt realise this was that funny :P It refers to the "big end" of the con rod that goes around the crank, as opposed to the "little end" that connects to the piston with a gudgeon pin.

  • Don't know if you have gotten an answer yet, but many modern cars have hydraulic lifters that can get sticky and fail with time. It might be something like that. My old Jetta used to tick a bit like that, but only at start up. Once oil pressure got up a bit things would loosen up and it'd quiet down. It did sound pretty bad, though; I agree with what others said -- don't drive it and don't rev it.

  • it might be a valve hiting the piston

  • BMW = Black Man's Wish

    BMW = Broke my Wallet

  • @eifeldude1 BMW -Beautiful Masterpieces on Wheels---- BMW -Beautiful Mechanical Wonder

  • Sounds like my truck when my spark plug boot fell off...

  • Spunds like harley! :D:D :D :D I like it! :D

  • Rebadge it as a 330d, no one will notice!

  • Possibly jumped time? idk about this motor, but some if your timing belt skips it offsets alot, while the computer may compensate, allowing your engine to run, it could be bashing your valves against your pistons as stated below. DO NOT DRIVE ANY VEHICLE WITH THIS KIND OF NOISE, and quit revving it......unless you have a disposable income and don't give a hoot about your car.....

  • This engine doesn't have hydraulic valve adjustment (automatic) but here, the valve clearance is set by plates that go between the camshaft and the... tappets?? I don't know for sure how it is called in English. My guess would be, for some reason one of those plates slipped out of its place, maybe it broke, or you revved your engine TOO high. For sure, let someone look after it QUICKLY and DON'T drive that car this way!!

  • bmw = big money wasted

  • @metalman343 Something a dumbass redneck would say

  • cylinder head is on the way out just had same problem with my company car 5 grand bill

  • BM Trouble U

  • its your camshaft......They are not properly adjust.....your camshaft...open the intake and exhaust and the spring release it....So when they are not all at same distance they make a crazy noise.....

  • you need a valve adjustment

  • did you mesure the compression in each cylinder first?

  • When it makes noise like that, you turn it off and remove the head/ valve assembly to see what the hell's wrong. You do not run it and attempt to rev it or there will probably be one less serviceable M3 on the roads.

  • Tappets?

  • it could be the double Vanos variable valve timing. They are very prone to going an the 3.2 straight 6.

  • @Cree2d hahaha its looks easy to repair a car in your world!!!

  • It's sound like a nice repair bill

  • Change oil and it will stop

  • this is sad to watch :(

  • a valve against the pistons head? BAhahaha yeah sure :P i hope you work on your own cars

  • could be a vacuum leak too

  • I love how people are diagnosing your car from a crappy YouTube video. Seriously? Have your car towed to a reputable shop that specializes in BMW's. As far as the "there's German technology" comment, let's see a similarly performing engine from an American or Japanese manufacturer go 300k miles without any issues...won't happen.

  • @MrJnande4176 my jeep is damn neer 300000k with no problems what so ever so theirs your american engine 4.0 I6

  • @MrJnande4176 my old 305 sbc had 280,000 miles before I yanked it in favor of a 350. There was nothing wrong with the 305, even raced it a few times before the 350. (slow as hell, but a good motor) so yeah, it happens. Never seen a BMW (or most new cars in general) stay on the road long enough for the motor to clock 300K.

  • connecting arm bearings are ruined! sounds like piston slap also...fucked something up nicelyy!

  • wow thats german tecnology! yeah

  • could also be a defect valvespring, that the valve hits against the piston head

  • OIL PUMP...NOT ENOUGH OIL IN THE HEAD.....

  • one of your hydraulic lifters probably failed. not really a huge problem as reliability is concerned. but definently an annoying noise, and probably a little loss of power.

  • i had that click with my 540i. check and see if a radiator fan blade is messed up? but that wouldnt explain why it goes up with rpm

  • Sounds like misadjusted valve, only one of them. It does not sound like Vanos

  • euro s50/52 doesnt have hydraulic lifters, mabey a bent valve, or seriously out of adjustment valve clearence. check that shit

  • Throw in a can of Lucas additive.

  • @kenner69 Do you really think lucas additive will sort that shit out? .........stupid!

  • @Mega251181 Sarcasm is something you obviously don't understand. ........stupid!

  • @kenner69 Suck my balls kenner. There are mongs on here who come out with s**t like that. Thought you were one of them..........still do!

  • M Power is the problem here. :)

  • so where in this vid does the engine actually fail?

  • Pulley, the belt wraps around two plastic pulleys.

  • Sounds like a stuck lifter

  • If the engine has been rebuilt, or even the cylinder head removed, you might want to check the timing chains. It could also be a hydraulic valve pusher that isn't getting enough oil (no valve clearance to check because it's hydraulic) . If the noise dissapears when the engine warms up > the oil becomes smoother and circulates better, or when the oil pressure rises on full load. Just a wild guess

  • @john289 These engines don't have hydraulic lifters

  • a valve , dont use that car or you are gonna breake something bigger

  • Almost blown engine you were racing... Lol

  • engine knock. ur piston are hitting the engine bock

  • Check valve clearance and VANOS timing

  • german cars with an engine failure are rare

  • I know the porblem, its called, a BMW

  • Valve lifters 100%

  • my god man change the timing chain!

  • change engine

  • Put a bullet n dat mothafucka......

  • Sounds like Vanos problems?

  • Sounds like a stuck hydraulic lifter but you have a rod knock at that.

Pull it out. Tear it down.

  • oil turning into engine sludge can cause this nosie try engine flush and oil change and check your timming belt as it may be out causing valve to tap against piston if so new cylinder head and piston as every time it knocks its doing damage to the top of piston and valve

  • oil turned into sludge engine flush it and change oil and check your timing belt

  • Best car ever... I love m3

  • This generation of M3 has been known to have main bearing problems. I personally experienced this. Had to have new engine put in 2005 M3 due to bearing failure.

    Good luck!

  • Camshaft or valve

  • sounds like valve rattle.

  • Rod Knock.

  • Spun bearing up the ass

  • It may be camshaft or bended crank, but think it's about сylinderhead, you'd better take a closer look.

  • i thin its the vanos, sounds like the crankshaft

  • hold it flat

  • is this a 2 stroke or diesel?

  • the e46's up to 2003.5 had a bad main bearing, check your manufacture date and see if you land in the recalls.

  • maybe its a bomb XD

  • sounds like a rod knocking or piston slapping.... sounds terrible... sucks to be you.

  • it has to be something with the valves

  • Är det en M3 E46?

Den motorn kunde ha felaktiga vev- och ramlager, kolla upp det snarast!

  • its a cilinder m3 #1

  • i am. 100% just had one at the shop, ther is no way back. the crankshaft might by damage to. DONT RUN IT.

  • VANOS...! Hell no. piston slap. if you ask me, and the engine is DEAD!. to many rpm.

  • That is way beyond VANOS failure. No VANOS has ever sounded that bad ever. That sounds a lot like piston slap.

  • vanos

  • vanos 100%

  • shit is broke reving it only means more damage take it to a shop for a new motor

  • sounds like a top end knock, the top end of your con rod, just take it to a garage, if ya catch it early it COULD save your engine

  • Ya get a intrepid. That is a really good car and I dont care what people may say about the car or its engine. There is nothing wrong with the 2.7 all you have to do is do the oil and your good.

    OH SHIIIIT

  • this is valvelifters all the way!

  • Piston slap all the way!

  • yep def VANOS. its part of the engine that helps regulate the amount of gasoline actually let into each cylinder. operates with help from O2 sensor. and yeeaa, no way around fixing it. u let it go n ull have a super-fail and one real bad day sometime soon. search dr. vanos. but i doubt youd wana get into the engine

  • VANOS! there is a vanos kit for that. search dr.VANOS

  • you forget a screwdriver on the enginecover ;-))

  • I think do you have a something loose in the conecting rod just where the connecting rod fit into the cam

  • wow i didnt know the rods went onto the cam.if that at all possible could you imagine the shape of those rods!?!??!?!?

  • open the engine check for _________.

  • It's a common bmw failure, its the rod bearings that goes to hell, and then the valves are touching the piston heads. Don't buy bmw folks, just look at this classic.

  • that has happened to mi mums car 2 years ago

she had no oil nd she was driving around nd it just died nd she put oil in it nd pretty much the motor was gone

it sounds exactly like what mums engine did

  • It is a valve that is knocking against a piston head.

  • @f14dsupertomcat1 On these engines they are common on fuckin up lifters

  • @f14dsupertomcat1 it could be alot of things, it could be the sound of a spark that is jumping through air, the engine could have overheated and the piston could be damaged and hitting the cylender walls, maybe a bent valve rod and the cam is hitting the top of it. etc

  • Sounds like a valve is out of adjustment remove the rocker cover and see which one it is look for the keepers and any loose parts that should not be there

  • I Think It's The Oil Pressure

  • I know a fucked Vanos makes a nasty ticking noise.

    Not cheap to replace either.

  • vanos is gone mate.

  • What a shame! Not only an M3, but the EVO M3 at that! The best of the best! (well, at least not this particular one)

  • is this a vanos or non-vanos

  • Humicky shaft

  • Thats worn cam lobes

  • scored piston

  • A valve

  • edysuica3279

    m3 sucks u think?

u sound like u suck cock by saying somthing stupid like that

  • @ashsbmwm3

That's because he's tired of getting smoked by them on the road.

  • @ashsbmwm3 M3 refers to the body - not so much a particular engine type. the above IL6 would appear in both 3 and 5 series

  • maybe the wrong gas lol

  • valve probleme!

  • that sounds like a sticky tappet. if it has been left for a bit then it will do that. if not then just type in engine lubricant on ebay and buy it. it will loosen up the parts inside.

  • Sounds like a lifter to me. Try running a thinner viscosity oil. If that stops or lessens the noise, You've just got a noisy lifter

  • auto shut down on the bmw due to overheating and high reving
