That's actually the best thing to do if you don't want your personal data to be recovered from the drive when you've formatted it, and plan to sell the computer it is installed in. Alternatively, just wait until the drive fails before you do it.

I recommend you use a larger hammer.

thats actually not the best thing todo. The best thing is fire or a metal shreader as all the data will still be on the platter, however if that had been a 2.5" disk, then smashing it might be ok as the platters will smash as they are glass.
