Another way to get bards off your back is to unsheathe your sword when they're next to you. They will flee and you'll get a bit of notoriety (unless you have the correct cape on), but guards won't attack you if they witness it.

If you walk into the bards and tap the run button you knock their banjoes out of their hands and they run away. This has no negative effects and can be done multiple times. I like to try and get a 'strike' by getting three bards in one move.
