Schrödinger should have been stuffed into a box. Now, he would be considered a blossoming serial killer. I first heard about that "experiment" in an episode of Stargate SG-1 and I didn't like it then, either where a cat was then named Schrödinger. If I never hear that story again, that'll be fine with me.

Now to narrow down the 50/50 possibility of the cat's living or non-living state in the box, you must open the box and observe if it's a live... Penny "opened the box", and there was a "live cat" (metaphorically, something that turned Penny on). xD

There are far more complicated models involved in quantum physics. Some buddies and I even thought about an experiment that would lead to a paradox. I don't quite understand, what you are trying to say though.

I think I know at least the basics of quantum physics, so please try to explain it.

@stibiff1989: no silly, it's LD50. Schroodinger's cat is about quantum physics. LD 50 kills 50% of what ever you use it on. If you put 4 cats in a box and use LD50, you know that exactly 2 will die. However, if you use LD50 on a single cat in a box, how do you know that it will still be alive? You cannot tell, and without touching the box for a noise, or scanning the box etc. , thus, we see that quantum physics revovlves around this concept of blind seeking. Actually Schrödingers Cat is a thought experiment. As said a cat is sealed in a box with poison, which is activated if an atom decays and activates the Geiger Counter. As proposed by quantum physics, the atom is in a state of superposition, since it is unobserved. As the cat's life is dependent on the decay of the atom, the cat is also in a state of superposition. The "Copenhagen Interpretation" assumes, that by opening the box, the atom has to "decide", therefore either decaying or not.

@stibiff1989 Still wrong. Schrödinger was trying to illustrate how ridiculous the notion of a particle having more than one state until observed was. He said "if that were true, then the cat would be both alive and dead until observed--that's preposterous!" (I'm paraphrasing).

Turns out, that while his illustration was effective, he was ultimately wrong about it's impossibility.

@stibiff1989 i do understand the importance of this in quantum physics, but realistically speaking, regardless of whether or not the box has been opened, the atom has already 'decided.' it simply hasn't been observed. lets say a video camera was running inside that box, and the cat died 5 minutes into the experiment but the box was opened 3 days later, the video would confirm it

Sheldon & Penny? That doesn't make any sense. Sheldon can barely stand Penny most of the time, and Penny thinks Sheldon is nuts, she refers to Sheldon as "Wackadoodle" "Hickabob". That's what makes the chemistry great between them as friends great but not as lovers. Sheldon couldn't stand being with someone whose not his equal intellectually and who doesn't see things like he does. That's why the only type of person he would end up with is someone like Leonard's mother, in other words, like him.

I agree that their scenes together are incredible. They have an amazing chemistry going on in a plutonic way. The problem is if they were to get together, then they would have to change Sheldon or Penny, because presently the way the characters are, there's no way they could stand each other in a relationship. That's the problem, if you change one or both of them, you risk losing that great chemistry they have between them. Anyway, that's my point of view.

A cat is placed in a box with a flask of poison that will open at a random point in time. So, once the box is sealed, it is unknown whether or not the cat is still alive.

As Beth563 pointed out it is not that the cat IS technically dead and alive but, rather the cat can be THOUGHT of as both dead and alive at any point once the box is closed.
