I think it would be helpful if you pulled your hair into some sort of wraparound and then put a nice crown of seashells on your head. Also, you should create some foam rubber elf ears and wear them, because mermaids look cool with that. And also you could be carrying a trident or a big spear like Neptune. But that's optional.
