  • the sidekick has been a life saver to me as a prelude to a sidekick/back kick combo

  • world champion boyy has dirt feets.EWWwwww.....:D

  • I don't understand all of the negativity and critisizm regarding this kick and TKD. As a woman, I would be overpowered by a male attacker, esp using only my upper body strength - but a kick like this would mess someone up enough to get the heck away from him. Debating different styles of MA is fine, hating on something that other's enjoy is pointless.

  • Tricking is way cooler XD

  • Also if you accidentally strike someones shin or upper arm or forehead with your forefoot then you run a high risk of breaking your own foot.

  • The thing with kicks, which makes me not wanna use them so much, is that they're slow and they expose your leg a lot. If you trap someones foot it's not that hard to break the ankle or knee, if you're quick enough. And with a broken leg you really aren't much good in a fight.

I prefer headbuts, elbows and knees, if you're gonna strike. They don't look as good and you have to be close to use them but that's my taste. They're simpler and I'm a simple person lol.

  • Lots of people posting here are 3 years old

  • Jesus have some respect. This is free. If you don't like it don't bother with it.

However he shouldn't bother with it either if he's not going to do it right. :(

  • No wonder she is world champion just look at her feet!

  • Wash your feet please ... Lol

  • i demolished many people with this kick,

  • This can easily be countered with a basic knowledge of Krav Maga and with a side kick you are supposed to twist your torso towards the ground, as a lot of the power comes from hips not just your leg.

  • Dont make fun of his sunglass tan, he will sidekick your nuts

  • a hard blow to deliver without getting countered unless you know what you are doing. Not so risk free fro an amatuer.

  • one more thing, I for one do not use this kick because you can get injured. Your opponent only has to move his body back and put his elbow on your ankle and it wil hurt like a motha fuc*a

  • the sidekick is very easy to block and when you block it you turn your opponent on one side making him very vulnerable. This guy says that he can break your hand if you block it, who in his right minf blocks a hit frontal????? another thing, that dirty feet girl's stance is way wrong, please explain how are going to put force in your hits, any hits, when your center of gravity and your large part of the weight is on your back foot????

  • lean martial arts online...what a joke

  • LOL.

  • booooooooom head shot

  • You cannot learn MA of the internet as a complete beginner.

Books and internet only serve as supplements for people who are already experienced.

  • Haha I hurt my sisters rib :) whoops

  • EWW that persons feet are super duper dirty ! D:

  • its a she.... LOL

  • and also your Dojo.

  • wash your feet god damn. Hygiene is one important thing in karate.

  • I already can karate :)

  • In practice, this kick if used against a more or less prepared adversary, should be applied only in combination with other kicks or aginst not one adversaries.

  • In reality, when you turn your body to do a side kick like it is shown here ,firstly, your kick is too slow and visible for the adversary, and secondly, you open your body for his counterattack.

  • @AndreiYudin70 you are wrong bro. this kick shown here is perfect and strong. this is the same way i learned this kick from my master who is from shaolin tample, he is called kanishka sharma. you can search him in youtube.

  • @AndreiYudin70, yes, this comment is perfect. I can add that I don't like kicks that need an unuseful and dangerous step to be charged. If you do this kind of things against a skilled fighter, surely you have your leg damaged before you start to lift up your feet. I use to not join NEVER my feet while i fight (as kick boxers, boxers and many others do.)By the way, the real strenght of the kick is in the rotation of the axes leg (and feet). May be i'm wrong but i've never seen this kick on a ring

  • @abacab67 since we're talking about martial arts,I would say applying this side kick against a wrestler (sambo,jiu-do etc.)must be still more dangerous, cause you grant the wrestler exactly the right moment to attack you.

  • @abacab67 Cung Le uses the sidekick a lot in UFC. A backside sidekick performed by someone who actually can perform it would kill you. The reason many people don't use sidekick is because it is hard to learn, and because, well... I don't know why it is so rarely used. It works great if you are able to kick to solar plexus.

  • @LOLLYPOPPE Cung Le has never fought in the UFC.

  • Why do people keep posting bad comments like dirty feet and that sidekick is not the strongest but thats not the point the point is how to teach you how to do a side kick

  • What do you mean most. Powerful kick it can be easily doughed causing you a serious damage i have a proof just search on youtube write jony jaa japanese demonstration and watch the video

  • Thanks for a very informative video. Much respect to you both!

  • wash your feet lady

  • 31 people are sidekicks

  • i saw a dude sidekicking a bullet but guess what... now he got a hole on his foot .... >.<

  • i did this without stretching so i think i tore a dick muscle.

  • @caramelskater You gotta protect the dick muscle...stretch by having sex beforehand ;-)

  • dirty feet

  • i freaked out when he said she

  • who is that chick,lol

  • Why don't MMA fighters throw this, its much more powerful, efficient and safe

  • @MostRecklessENT mma is not that effective on the street, most of them just try to get on the ground.ok lets say there are multiple fighters at once well bjj or judo want work.so learn ho to fight like real fighter(cain valeswqua)

try some boxing and tkd(itf style)

  • @MostRecklessENT I think I saw Anderson Silva threw a few of those.

  • Joe Lewis' and John Graden's credibility in the martial arts is beyond reproach. I have never met either man, but anyone wh has been involved in the martial arts for any length of time knows of their credibility.

DS, a properly refolded sidekick isn't likely to be caught. And if your oppoonent focuses too much on catching a kick with his hands, he may discover how hard it is to maintain his grip on the leg when his ribs are broken.

My step-up sidekick was my favorite technique for power.

  • With all do respect, a pivot right before the surface is a risk. Why not plant your heel facing the direction of your kick by first aiming with your hip. This is a more natural form of body physics and better for your hips and balance. The power generated by this motion is non telegraphed creating an effortless prowess using flexion along with follow through.

  • I'm in the black belt already

  • @Evelyn962000 i will learn do you have vidios on it ? =)

  • the one time a guy throw a side kick at me i caught his leg this was in a street fight and i pushed foward and the guy fell over XD

  • безопастная траектория это кротчайшая траектория те без поднятия колена

  • I love the side Kick, extremely powerful! Nice video John!

  • A CLEAR COMBAT MOMENT - From my years of combat training I think it is safe to say that

the Sanda/Sanshou fighters have the best side kicks. Players like Cung Le, always uses his heel to explode into his opponent. You have to be careful and not use it too much, it will burn a lot of energy allowing your opponent to gain an edge.

    Clear Combat Fighting System

  • I don't agree with your demo of "most powerful sidekick there is." In JKD we jump and move into our sidekicks.

  • Thanks for such a fine job on explaining and demonstrating a side kick. I would expect nothing less than excellance from a student of Joe Lewis.

  • here comes the kick , here it comes....BOOOM! hahaha

  • if you try to kick someone in face you get kickrd in the balls and your done

  • Started throwing kicks in '68.Been teaching since 1971.Of late been reviewing so called lessons for beginners on the basic side kick on the internet.Congrats!Of all the vids I have reviewed, your explanation is the most cogent. One aspect that eludes everyone in their explanations is the importance of keeping the knee of the balancing leg bent throughout the kick. And if a pivot is involved, having the foot of the balancing leg return flat to the floor after the pivot and before contact is made.

  • haha at first i thought she was a boy

  • doesnt look like a girl

  • my favorite kick is an hook kick just because its a tricky kick that people dont see kicking but i love this kick too

  • umyj sobie nogi !

  • In martial arts, you notice alot of people in the arenas even though their black belts, when they do a move, it looks as if it had no improvement... wanna know why??? They lack stretching exercises and warm ups. Because, i notice in some martial arts school, they dont warm up, or sit up or push up or stretch!! -.- i can finally do a perfect sidekick too! xD self thought!!! but john graden kinda helped me with additional info so... thanks!! xD

  • Why when i go into the chamber does my pelvis/torso twist backwards so im facing away? or is it ment to be like this?

  • It's funny I can reach someone's chin with my right leg but can barely hit someone's sternum with my left, damn I suck.

  • @HybridD91 just train your left leg. it can be done. i had that same problem a while back.

  • @HybridD91 pay attention to your supporting leg, often, you will notice that the supporting leg does not rotate to allow the hips to roll which is essential when kicking above the waist. The foot of the supporting leg should pivot to point almost directly behind you, also you need to lean back a certain amount to allow the leg to move up, it's very common for this to be natural, almost instinctive on one side but needs concentration with the other side

  • stopy bys umyl.. xD

  • I did this to guy at my school, side of the head.

  • Use the BLADE of the foot to get the most damaging kick - less surface area of the foot touching equals more power. That kick will do a fraction of the power vs using the blade of the foot.

  • @badreligionfan85 If ur not conditioned for it, ur ankle breaks. Also, using the foot sends opponents flying :3 Blade of the foot, in my opinion, is really only useful for hitting the throat, and possibly getting in under the ribs

  • im learning martial arts on my own until i can find a karate place to help me learn about it. So i don't really know much about it. But i'm slowly moving farther and farther on my skills. I've been on google and youtube, it will be a while until i complete this on my own should i try on my own?

  • That girl has awesome technique and obvious power. Very impressed...

  • John you are an excellent teacher, and inspired me in many ways. I patterned the way you teach to help me convey information to my students.

    god bless

  • there is only 1 kick more powerful is a turning side kick gives even more power then a regular side kick

  • Quick question: the kick is preceded by planting the back foot just behind the front foot: doesn't that give away the intention of the kick? I always tried to launch side kicks by lifting forward knee up, then pivoting the back foot while driving the front foot forward. Would that limit my kick range? Am I missing something with that forward step, or is that just different form?

  • Oh, I know why her feet were dirty, she was taring the roof and decided to help him out with this vid.

  • when your striking with the side kick u are supposed to kick with the blade edge of the foot

  • The heel is better.

  • dis guyz kinda old for dis kinda shit

  • her feat are dirty as hell looks like she side kicked a bag of shit

  • That's totally funny!!!! Good catch....LOL

  • JKD sidekick is basically a step-in or hopping sidekick, an offensive kick. Front leg sidekick is mainly defensive if the opponent gets too close. The rotating sidekick shown here, I think can be used both offensively and defensively, but the turn uses a little more time and energy and does not reach too far. It's sort of in between both previously mentioned sidekicks, but I guess it works well with people who has long limbs.

  • also guys i would like to point out

the side kick should NEVER be aimed high

you only really need to aim the side kick low at your opponents kneecap or shin or groin

    Never higher than waist

the higher you raise your leg, the more vulnerable you are in terms of body exposure and off-balance.

Kicks should only be aimed at your opponents leg or groin, but then again i train in JKD which is not a sport and also has the dominant side and limbs fowards in the stance making it easier to low kick

  • Not the rear leg side kick, the spinning back or side kick. You are speaking about the wrong kick. I have competed in many AAU tournaments, the spin back kick is bad to get hit with. So far as a street fight, the knee lift is the worst to get hit with in the groin. Street fighting is easy, most guys are out of shape or drunk.

  • I hate the side kick its easy to read and hard to set up quickly, I am a big fan of spinning back kick or spinning side kick though its much more elusive and powerful.

  • @Xgloomshadow I side kick to above the waist to the diaphragm. I use it when spar at my MT gym. The MT guys aren't used to this style :)

  • You're an idiot I kick people in the head with roundhouses and spinning heel kicks and frontkicks and they have been knocked out, now tell me that isnt effective

  • WTF is that a man or woman In white shirt??????????

  • .. youll never know :D

  • I can't get past the filthy F'n feet!

  • Spinning back kick is the most powerful kick, it is very hard to land. The spin plus the pushing out makes it the most damaging. I like the side kick, but I have been hit by both.

  • its still not as powerful as the JKD one

The Jeet Kune Do side kick is launched by propelling your body fowards with your footwork then launching your side kick, so if you weight 150 lbs you will hit with 150 lbs where as a turning side kick will only use the body weight from your turn, so it still wont be as powerful.

Also, during the turning side kick you are stationary or standing still while your back is exposed. This makes you a large target to hit = ineffective for the street

  • @clearcombat

    oh, and clearcombat

the turning side kick is also rather innacurate because of the turn too. In other words, you dont see where it is aimed at. Making it effective for sport since the judges will be impressed because of the skill requirement, but bad for self-defence.

Usually, the more skill something takes, the worser it is for self-defense.

  • the most powerful type of Side Kick is the Side Kick from Jeet Kune Do. Look it up.

  • yer by bruce lee

  • My leg does not have the flexibility for this, I can't side kick higher then a normal persons hip. is there any stretch or something to help with this?

  • check out elasticsteel's videos he will tell you all about how to get your kicks higher and good stretches.

  • Cool nice. I'm working for my black belt. Now I'm 3 Kup (Purple with stripe)

  • why is she kicking with sole of her foot, the power would be 2-3 times more if the technique was done properly and uses the side of her foot

  • I love this technique, I use it all the time when sparring.

  • at 0:53 go fuck urself banggg!!!!

  • judy chop

  • that sidekick is better than robin!

  • Is this possible to do in 3 inch platform boots?

    lol

  • Thank you for a really nice video. Is this Jeet Kune Do?

  • It seems influenced by JKD but the punches are taken directly from western boxing. The JKD straight punch for example is unique and faster than a jab and non-telegraphic. I still appreciate these videos.

  • About dirty feet. The floor was dirty. I had shoes on and she didn't. It was not her fault. She was kind enough to help me shoot a video that many seemed to have enjoyed and/or got something out of.

    Thanks for watching.

    John Graden

  • @trueronin people were commenting aboutdirty feet??!!?? What nonsense! When you train in bare feet they get dirty! What kind of rubbish is that to complain about??

  • @trueronin hi john

i cant choose, kickboxing or kung fu

i like the kickboxing style more

but i want to know more than just kicking and punching

    thanx

  • @CENANRULZ why not do both?

  • @colstreamer ok :)

  • Wash your feet woman!

  • i used to have karate classes, last school, i have been learning for three years and i know some moves and i know all the excercises, so i can learn martial arts online.

  • Sure, everybodies a world champion

  • wtf that sucked dude, u dont even know how 2 do a good side kick

  • the muay thai round house is alot more deadly

  • Actually the scorpion kick from the african art of Mobutu is the best. Good luck finding a video let alone a teacher outside of Africa.

  • just youtubed it, now way in hell that does more damage than a sidekick.

But actually this guy is wrong, the most damaging attack would be a jumping sidekick. Pretty tough to land but that's the most damaging.

  • Was that person that's wearing white clothes a girl or a boy o_O

  • a girl. he said "she" haha

  • You CAN'T learn martial arts online, you need training because you won't be able to use that in real life if you don't have the muscles developed for that move...

  • What if you did thousands of repetitions on a bag after you watched the dvd's. I suppose you don't get feedback as to how you grasped the move.

  • Thanks for the video. :)

  • rubish, what a crap....................

  • Anatomically speaking, the knee and elbow, and possibly the head butt are capable of delivering the hardest strikes.

A good side kick can be very powerful, but this form of the kick will be relatively weak compared to other ways of throwing it. This version will be quicker, but deliver less power.

  • shuffle sidekick or "running" sidekick is the more powerful way

  • soll mir recht sein ....******

  • ich blicks ned..des englisch is ned in meinem nirvana entzhaltenm

  • dann bist du dumm :)

  • That "Science of" farce with crash test dummies ranked knees first. No allowance for body weights. Arbitrary and pretty average representatives of many arts. Thai boxing knee was into a target pulled inwards with the arms vs other kicks where the target was unsupported. Put the dummy in front of a wall or moving inwards = different result. Power is not one number, it's a curve: peak power (fa jing) often more important than total power (push). Contact surface areas. Don't trivialise.

  • @TonesterD Can you please speak more clearly? "knees first" in what? "no allowance for body weights" what does this even mean... I understand peak power vs total power but what is the point you are trying to make?

  • @theguyi26 Sorry - my earlier comment addressed an earlier one re Muay Thai knees being stronger than side kicks. I was saying the "Science Of Martial Arts" TV shows weren't very scientific and their conclusions may or may not be correct, but they can't be taken at face value. In the year since I posted, youtube stopped ordering replies after the comments they were for... doesn't make sense by itself.

  • You're just the standard ignorant YAH MANNN I WATCHED TEH UFCs AND THEY SAID THAT MUAY THAI KICKS RAWK AND I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT CAUSE I WEAR TAPOUT kind of guy.

  • should i be woried dat my girl sed she knew how 2 sidekick

  • no because shes probably doin it wrong.

    lol

  • its a woman asshole

  • hahahahahauhuauhauuha...

is that a woman or a man .?

  • hahahaha

  • damn wash your feet

  • is true wash ur dam feet!!

  • LOL hahahahaha

  • Joe Lewis set the standard for the side kick. It is my favorite kick.

  • At least now I know why a superhero's right-side man is called a sidekick...I think.

  • what about chambering the leg vertically(pulling the knee into your chest) , then swiveling into the kick with a shift of your hips/supporting foot?

  • Hes right a sidekick( if did correct) can stop people from breathing for a bit.

  • lol its a women????

  • not only men do karate.

  • no its a man

    retard

  • ur a fuck head bra

he says "she" like 5000 times

    u r dumbest

  • and where the fuck did you come from

i was being sarcastic, look at my comment again (its so obvious)

  • Nice explanation.

  • i disagree this is the not most powerful techinqe my side turning kicks can break ribes and any thing in the way

  • What ever a side turning kick is, it isn't going to be as strong unless ur hitting with the heel and using ur largest muscle groups, (quads and ass). the only thing i can think of being stronger is the reverse side kick (which is still a side kick)

  • it's a move in itf taekwondo and you are useing your thys and my legs are really strong and i'm goodat kicking thus giving me the power i need plus it is a muti purpose kick ithink

  • a technique that bruce lee adore

  • Pathetic technique.. in the end she also grab a hold to his arm so she wont fall.. what was she world champion in?

    - Raden

  • her feet is do dirty watch omg!!!

  • Wow thats cool! I bet you its hard to ame

  • Well demonstrated!

  • side kicks are sick but knees are more powerful

  • I still argue that fact. All depends on the range of the techinque. The knee is limited to close range were the side kick can be used in close range to push off the oppunite and long rang to cause damage. A running or sliding side kick I think causes more damage cause of the momentam. Thai knees are great but limited.

  • Would this really work in a street fight though?

  • wut this kick or martial arts, well w/e yes, both yes. only way this would work in street fight though is if you know more, cuz person might catch it. u must know more.

  • Probably, because you have more self control than the other person and you are trained, where as you assume the other person doesnt know it is coming, it is quick. The other person very well might be well taught...that is why this wont be the only move you are taking ahahaha.

  • yes it would you just have to be fast

  • good

  • Love it. One of the most powerful kicks.

Best used as a counter, when the opponent advances. Uses the opponent's weight and momentum. They also can't react as fast as this is a slower kick. Stuff 'em right in the short ribs with your heel. I like the back kick better for this though.

You can also cripple someone with a kick to the knee. Drop your weight into the kick by flexing your support knee. But this is slow and you have to be slick to get away with it.

  • no entiendo un coño y soy argentino alguien me lo traduse al boludo este
