I remember a little bit of the opening theme: We'll teach you how to run and field and hit the ball, you can too, we've got a hunch you'll love the baseball bunch.
@jps8080 They filmed the show in Tuscon, and the Brewers have trained in Maryvale all these years. Maybe they got Surhoff in '86 spring training. Remember, he started that season with the big club because the Brewers were so bereft of talent.
Imagine if a guy like Johnny Bench took steroids? The guy would have hit 600 ft. home runs. With what's going on today it makes you appreciate guys like Bench even more. Guys who did it the right way: George Brett, Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Eddie Murray, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver. I remember watching The Baseball Bunch as a kid and I miss the 1980's. Much different world back then. I'm only 40, but I'm talking like an old man! :-(
You're right. Speed was rampant during those times, but speed didn't balloon players up 50 lbs. and give them heads the size of beach balls. Players of all eras messed around with stuff. Ruth drank like a fish and God only knows what Cobb was doing back then or what he'd do today. The whole drug situation in professional sports is mess that won't go away. It's a crap sandwich and fans are just going to have to take a big bite.
Oh im with you on that, I loved baseball from the early 1980's. Sadly my favorite team was a trendsetter on the steroids era (The Oakland A's) in the late 1980's. Now that you mentioned it Ty Cobb was probably a cocaine addict back in the day, due to his violent actions. I agree with everything, by the way go Tar Heels, Ed Davis is my favorite up and coming player for them.
I guess the "Bash Brothers" were actually the "Roid Brothers" It is sad. I'm hoping UNC cuts down the nets in April. Ed Davis is a great player and Roy Williams has the #1 Recruiting Class coming in next season. Should be another great season! Wait 'till you see Henson! Take care
Well, how do you know Bench and all those other guys wasnt taking steriods? Steroids been around for a while. Me personally, I feel Bench is a CLEAN player but i felt the same about AROD and Manny and look what happened with them!
Steroids have been used for at least a hundred years, and likely were used by some athletes at various points throughout that time. However, they weren't popularized in competitions until the 70's, and even then it was generally weightlifting. So you probably didn't see heavy usage until the late 80's.
HOF Mike Schmidt admitted that if he had the opportunity, he would have used steroids, but he didn't even know about them while playing. His career took him through the 70's and 80's, so judging by that, you would think that it didn't hit mainstream baseball until the late 80's, early 90's
There isn't a good reason why MLB shouldn't have this show or something like it on every Saturday for the young baseball fans of today. It was fun to be a kid and a baseball fan in the early eighties. The Baseball Bunch was a great show and really promoted baseball to kids in a fun, positive way. MLB certainly has the money to produce these types of shows for kids. MLB does a terrible job of marketing baseball to the young fans.
We're ready to play. We're learning the way to do it right! We're The Baseball Bunch. We're going to go far. We learn from the stars. We've got a hunch you'll love The Baseball Bunch! We're having some fun as we learn how to run and hit and throw and catch that ball. You can learn too. We're waiting for you. We've got a hunch you'll love The Baseball Bunch!
Players today would probably want 6 figures to appear on the show.
