@xoligatorx Do some research on both of the breeds and see which one would suit you best! Senegals tend to bond with only one person but Sun Conures can be quite noisy. Have you ever owned a bird before?!!
Hey man, what is the size of the cage you have for Kili? I'm planning on getting a Senegal soon and I don't want the cage I'm buying to be too small. It's 54L (stand + cage) X 18W x 18D
You do a wonderful job with Kili! I have a sennie myself and Lil Rock looks to be the same subspecies as Kili. Rock has similar colored eyes (most sennies I see have yellow, not grey) and is a small girl.
Would love to compare notes and chat if you don't mind emailing me.
ur sengal is awesome!!!!! im going to be getting a parrot soon, but i cant decide. can anyone help me decide between a sun conture, a senegal, or an african grey?
What I mean by a one person bird is that the bird will bond to one person and that person could practically do anything to the bird and it doesn't bite them and is really nice to them and anyone else will get bit. Senegals are notorious for being one person birds and for aggression issues. They may be small but they think they are so much bigger and will big fights with creatures greater in size. Often times the bird will bond to whoever spends most time but sometimes it chooses someone else!
No. I am suggesting that all parrots have pros/cons and it is up to you to research and understand them and make a well-informed decision based on your own situation and desired characteristics.
ahh alright. i have a question. i know parrots require alot of attention, and i plan to play with it alot and teach it stuff, but i do have school from 830-3. will being alone affect the parrot?
Would being alone affect it? Yes. Can they deal with it? Maybe. There are few owners who spend all day with their parrots and that can be ok if they are treated properly and trained right. They need to have things to do so they don't get bored in cage. Not only a good selection of toys but also foraging possibilities. They can spend all day figuring out how to get the nut out! Also, if you spend too much time with parrot at first and not enough later, it will have issues. Need balance.
ok thanks, i really appreciate you helping me out. sry to bother you, but just 1 last question. when kili does the trick right, what treat are you giving him?
I give Kili anything she likes as treats. The most convenient thing to use is seeds (like from a parrot mix). Since she is on a pellet diet, she really appreciates opportunities to earn seeds. At other times I use nuts, apples, carrots, oatmeal, popcorn, bread, or pasta. Basically whatever your bird really likes save it for training rather than feeding it that favorite food all of the time.
hey again. so i went to the parrot store today, and saw a cute 9 week old senegal. i didnt pick it up for 2 reasons. i felt a little nervous about the bird biting me, and it shit on my arm twice. is this normal to be experiencing? im going back on friday to play with it, and if i like it and feel comfortable picking it up, im gonna pick it up.
The bird shitting or you being nervous? The first one is perfectly normal. The second is really up to you. If you know nothing about parrots, a Senegal is a bit much of a parrot to jump right into. Perhaps with proper owner knowledge and dedication they can be a great first time bird but for someone completely clueless, they can be very aggressive and dominating. You'd better get damn comfortable and used to it before getting one. I don't recommend you buy any parrot till getting bit by one!
Awesome! I've always said a "working" bird is a happy bird! My green cheek loves to do tricks, and my little Senegal is old enough now to know his favorite treats, so I'll have to use them to reward him. I've always used treats and rewards. But I've heard the clicker is best. Congrats though! Awesome vid!
It's not the clicker but rather meticulous training that gets a bird to this stage. I usually train her one to two times a day for 10 minutes. It's not hard but requires consistency and practice. It's fun and a way to spend time with bird anyway.
@xoligatorx those where my choices sun conures are very loud but playful and fun senegals and quiet and playful but not as playful

Suns are sweet but really REALLY loud, Greys can be really neurotic, and Senegals are really really sweet and pretty quiet...I'd go with a Senegal.
tabolainla 2 years ago
Also Senegals are really aggressive and one person birds. Are you ready to work with that?
kiliparrot 2 years ago
when you say one person birds, do you mean that it'll like the person that plays with it the most? or will it just choose who it likes
