I mean this movie isn't based in any specific time. At least I don't think. They're suppose to be in Florida but I always assumed it's suppose to based in the 60s or 70s. But Tim Burton mixes elements from the 50s and the 90s as well.

But no this isn't what it was like back then. The setting is merely a fantasy take on suburban life.
