Kicks sand in the Bangles' faces and I actually have a real soft spot for the Bangles overall (not to mention something hard for Hoffs). This is is far superior, and I'm not just saying that becasue its the original.
Have to agree K and Ws do it better than the Bangles. I like the Bangles best when Michael sings lead but that is just me, I suppose. Great song, thanks for posting.
Actually, the 'original' version was released in 1983 - only in Canada- and was sung by Kimberly Rew (the writer). This is one is a remake for Capitol. In those days unemployment was very high in Liverpool, so it was a good place to go to do 'nothing all the days of my life'. The line "Where are you going with that Ub40 in your hand" makes this clear: UB40 was the name of the unemployment form in Britain.
@amtlpaul - Are you saying that the 'original' version was sung by Kimberley Rew, the guitarist (who is a guy), and not Katrina herself? I'd like to hear that version if that's true. Do you still have a copy?
I've only ever heard the Bangles version of this song until now, and I love it. I also love the Bangles version as well. The jury's out as to which I prefer, but I think that I will settle upon a verdict of liking them equally, (although I prefer Katrina's singing).

@junkers290 I heard Kimberley's first, it was the b-side of their massive single "Walking on Sunshine". I thought the Bangles cover was lame compared to this.
Apparently she had writers block and for some reason she thought that a trip oop north to ‘do nothing’ was the cure, as you do. The irony being as no body had a job they where free to sit around and drink tea and make music, consequently there was a very vibrant scene in L’Pool at the time(the teardrops, bunnymen, wha whatever, holly Jonson, bill drummond, china crisis, Dead or Alive, Icicle Works, OMD, Jayne Casey Etc) I am assuming that she was maybe thinking that she could tap in on it.
@BabylonAGoGo I sent you a reply on your own video, but for ppl only seeing this I sent BabylonAGoGo accusing him of something he didn;t do cuz I am a dick, but go to his channel and check his tune, they are right good.
I believe Bangle's version in YouTube, sounds more melodic. However, I think we don't hear this one with CD-quality audio, and the comparison may not be fair. But although these, this video clip sounds good too.
Even though I was a metal head, I was a HUGE closet Bangles fan. Even though I knew Kimberly Rew from KATW wrote this song, I had never heard their version until just now. I must say, I love it. It's a little more raw than the bangles version. I'm digging it.
Wow !! What an awesome piece of power pop !! This song kicks ass !! I like the Bangles version alot too ! But, now we all know where they borrowed this tune from !! Long Live Kimberly Rew !
It's pretty obvious that this song arises from a place and time, and that place and time wasn't very pleasant. Consequently, the song has power and immediacy. In contrast, the Bangles' version is just a vehicle for their vocal expression and a good sound for them to do their stuff. This is the "real thing" and their cover is a pretty copy. I love the Bangles but Kimberley Rew owns this song in more ways than one.
@proto1type Hey we are entitled to our opinions, but I really do believe the Bangles version is watered down.
the guitar performance by Rew is much more stylized and emotive--and he's a better soloist by far. I find it difficult to believe a cover can be better than the original. Don't get me wrong, I like the Bangles, but their version can't touch this.
@BabylonAGoGo Yeah, sure, of course I respect your opinion too.Maybe it's because I only ever heard the Bangles' version . I actually didn't know Katrina had the original. I will listen to Katrina's version a few more times - maybe I will start to appreciate it more. Cheers!
@proto1type @johnnysalmao Technically this is not the original, the original was released on the self titled 1st album "Katrina and the Waves" from 1983. This is the second version recorded for their major label debut after the bangles hadr eleased their version.
@jat13 Absolutely. This is their own re-recording of this song. The previous version (much less polished production, more-pacey, stripped down) is brilliant (much better, as are most original recordings of songs) and is more comparable with The Bangles version (which is excellent, that goes without saying).

I loved this as the b side of Walking on Sunshine. My girlfriend bought it in 1986 and listening to it now it's just as good as it was then.
