This is not a very clean program. But of course it is relatively clean for Chan. However, the point is just laughably too high. I would say, great job Lori!!
Only Michelle Kwan and Patrick Chan become one with the music as they skate. Besides Michelle, only Patrick has evoked an emotional level in me unsurpassed by any other skater. Patrick truly skates with heart and feels the music. Other male skaters might skate to the music, but only Patrick becomes part of the music.
interpretation? where is it? the guy with the never-ending same smile and the never-ending forever arms attitude all the time....and mistakes ,as well!
We used to say that he owned the component score and "in between" stuff...if only he had the quad and consistent triple axel. NOW he does...I think he may be on his way to becoming the best ever!
Unbelievable! Above 100 for executed elements and 97,6% on PCS... amazing! The way he skates is extraterrestrial ! His flow, moves in the fields, steps and "transitions into the jumps" are just unmatched. Congrats!!!
OMG. I was not a fan of Patrick Chan prior to this season because his programs were always slightly sloppy and no quads. I hated how he was awarded big scores then. But this year, I admire his style, tasteful music choice, and hands down most difficult program of all times! I'm a big fan of Jeremy Abbott and Johnny Weir, but I really think they can shut up now about PC because he has just surpassed everyone! By the way, I'm a very biased American fan, but I'm dying to go to Nice to see Patrick!
It´s strange how some people KNOW who is gonna win gold in Sochi. Are you people fortune tellers or what? Can you also tell me what are the odds I will become a millionaire ??????? LOL!!!!
I'm so glad that Chan is doing so well since the Olympics. Some were undermining Chan because he couldn't land a quad. Now that many skaters can land quads, they are not as big of a deal. Now they actually need to work on their artistry. What shall Plushenko do now with his pride because it was all from landing quads and he has little to no artistry. I will never forget the time when Plushenko was rolling around the ice in one of his programs to convey his artistry, I just laughed hard.
@zrschultz Patrick is the complete package with excellent choreography by Lori Nichols. Many times Lambiel moves his arms like a crazy man, yet his feet are not moving or he is doing simple steps. Many sportscasters have mentioned this fact that his arm movements distract from the fact that his footwork is simple. Go Patrick at the Worlds!
@5879coco As I said, Patrick is the best technical skater in the business today. However, I don't feel any authenticity from his movement. I love the way he moves. I don't feel ANY emoting from him nor do I feel that the movement is anything more than a repetition of countless hours of practice. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you HAVE TO or SHOULD do something. It's a problem I have with CoP. There's a reason that this sport has always had an "artistic" component to it.
@5879coco This sport is about taking all the technical elements and creating something more than that. To create art out of them. Patrick just looks like a machine to me. It's just my opinion (and I'm obviously in the minority). PotO was so successful because there is a story and a character behind the music (Though, truthfully, I saw NO Erik besides the fact that he used his hands as a mask.) I only give these critiques because he IS so talented and I do believe he has more artistry in him.
@5879coco He just needs to find it or at least, make it more available to the audience. People recognize his talent, technically. He has a way to go, in terms of artistry.
@ZRSchultz You certainly write many words but you never explain what you consider to be great artistry. You just give silly reasons like he doesn't show emotions or is not authentic. There are supreme artists in Asia and Japan especially who will give performances showing absolute and exquisite control over their movements and yet never show any emotion whatsoever. There are so many ways to be artistic. You seem to have a rather narrow definition of it.
@rickyMontreal Are they supposed to show emotion? Sometimes the absence of emotion IS the artistry. Also, what are we talking about here, skating? Art is defined as: "The product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect."
What I consider great artistry in skating is to take what the choreographer has given you and to make it more than that, to make it your own, put your personality into it. It's basically the difference between a great replication and something that maybe someone else did, but in a way that makes it novel or different in a moving way. I don't get that with Chan. I get (and agree with) the fact that he's an amazing athlete.
@rickyMontreal What I don't agree with is that he's some BRILLIANT artist. He HAS the vehicle to be one. He may just not be my flavor, which is perfectly fine. I respect the skills he has. I just think he's very GOOD at doing very intricate TECHNICAL things with no emotional connection.
@ZRSchultz For heaven's sake, stop your ranting about 'emotions'. We know what emotion is! Remember COMPETITIVE figure skating is first and foremost a sport. Any addition is icing on the cake. And also remember art is to a great extent, PERSONAL. We know you cannot connect with Patrick. Period.
@spikydurian Well, that person asked me a question. SO I answered it. Don't get upset because I try to explain myself. Also, I disagree with your assumption that just because this is a sport, that the artistry is by ANY means less than important. Also, I'm not ranting about emotion. I'm ranting about connection to the MUSIC which is also known as INTERPRETATION and PERFORMANCE, which are PROGRAM COMPONENTS. Stop trying to undermine my point because YOU don't understand what great skating is.
@ZRSchultz Upset? Why should I be upset? YOu are the one who is upset since you claim I UNDERMINE your point. That's one big ego talking. You are the one who thinks you know all. I give my opinion you give yours.
@redkerr15 Just watched Plushenko's LP at Euros. He's great .. still jumping well in his late 20s. Kudos. But I still think Kozuka, Dai and Chan footwork and transitions are CURRENTLY the best in town.
@spikydurian I agree Chan's transitions are stunning and Plushenko has still got improvements to make. But having seen his short at Euros live he is addressing the issues he has been previously criticized for. The spins were sharper, foot work was awesome and there was a real passion in his skating. Even the Eurosport boys noted he was more restrained and mature. Now if he can get healthy and carry on making improvements Chan will have to be perfect at Sochi.
@redkerr15 Don't write off Dai. If he gets his jumps right, he's a contender. And hopefully sweet Fernandez will get it all wrapped up in time for Sochi, and if Nan Song, a brilliant jumper like Plushenko can get his other aspects improved, it's will be a good watch for the men. Oh yeah, Jeremy has improved too. YOu are soo sure Plushenko will win gold in Sochi?? Never underestimate the upcoming younger generation.
@spikydurian No, not sure. But you can't beat his consistency. I would love Fernandez to step up to the game. His head was down at Euros from the start but that quad toe! Look it is all good for the men's competition, can't wait!
Good job, Patrick. This was his best effort of the season by a mile. For me this program is not as good as Phantom, but he did skate Phantom for two years so he was able to have it perfected. The score for this is inflated and unreasonable, however.
Nice to see. He put it all in there and hit it. As a figure skating fan I am glad to see such athleticism and beauty combined. What a treat. The little nuances were unbelievably great! Love it.
Plushenko and Chan just should not be in the same sentence. Technically and artistically, Chan is the "complete package" :) He has all my support, always!
Please, can anyone tell me what the triple/triple combo is with the half loop in between? And yes, totally rate him above Plushenko but still to me, Yagudin is the best of all time - Chan is superb I still think there is more to come from him -which is saying something because this performance IS awesome! Thanks for uploading!
@sharonbago1 Did I say anywhere that I dislike him? No, so stop inferring things. I think he's a supreme technician. He's NOT this amazing artist that his zealots think he is. His "artistry" is ALL choreography. There no personality in his skating. His face gives me nothing, other than focus. He's a GREAT skater. He's NOT a great artist (Yet. There's always time to improve). Sharon, if you watch those who are considered great artists and then watch Patrick, you'll see what I'm saying.
@3gatsunolion His last minute is all passion - the expression in the transition out of the 2A up until the final pose. The same thing with his Phantom program. I'd certainly rate him ahead of jump-and-pose-Plushenko
@Proustable Agree!! If this guy is overscored, then I guess it is his turn because I believe Plushenko has been waaay overscored his entire career. I'm glad Patrick does not wobble his head and shakes his hips like Plushenko.
@Proustable I'm a Plushenko fan but it's true, he won the Gold in '06 with his jump-and-pose program, and then in '10 the judges didn't quite buy it. But at this point I don't think either Chan or Evgeny will win Worlds this year, there are too many young guys coming up
@Proustable I should be fair and say I'm referring to Plushenko during the latter part of his career. When Yagudin and Plushenko had their rivalry, Plushenko really was amazing. His 2002 Olympic LP was amazing. But after Yagudin and no clear man to challenge him, Plushenko coasted on command and charisma. And awesome jumps.
@ZRSchultz A good artist takes the choreography and makes it more than just a collection of jumps, spins, transitions, arm movement, and footwork. Go look at Yagudin, Buttle, Lambiel, Curry, Kwan, etc: the greats. They all took that performance to the next level. He needs to learn that and THEN he will be unbeatable in my book. He's the best technician in figure skating today. Not the best artist.
I see not much to wow about. Good jumps, but very dull, monotonous, boring step sequences and spin positions, to say nothing of the arm moving - each minute and part of the FS - the same. Choreography for choreography, his soul far away from the audience... Another gifted athlete of Plushenko's type.
@marienike Are you for real here.Best male skater that i've seen in a long time. He's the best and i'm no ashamed to say i'm from the States and pretty much cheering for this canadian.Like to see you put skates on and try to attempt this fantastic progran.Go Patrick Go.
When he is on, he is spectacular. It's just when he falls 3 times and still wins, then I have a problem.
