Having a PhD doesn't mean a whole lot. I have a bachelors in Lit and my knowledge is so specialized that I'm slow to think of more general answers. I tend to think of authors and stories that few people are familiar with. I was better at Lit questions when I was only familiar with the canon and not some of the more obscure works out there.
They never tell you what they have a PhD in. Obviously the last guy doesn't have his in literature. If his PhD was a science field, then it is quite possible that he would blow it.
I just heard that this show might make a comeback. They are currently casting for a pilot of a new version of DD. It will be interesting to see whether it will be picked up.
This endgame has the same problem that "Win Ben Stein's Money" does -- you can never be sure if the opponent is taking a dive on purpose or not. (Come on, would a PhD really have any reason to be desperate for $100?)
Maybe...it just seems like someone with a PhD could easily find a way to make a lot more than that.
Regardless, I don't think this is a very good endgame. It seems to depend more on luck or the stupidity of the Spoilers than any knowledge/skill of the contestant himself.
Not to mention having to go back to your place of employment and have to face those other cocky PhDs. "You didn't know Hans Christian Andersen? Where did you get your degree from, the street corner?"
If you listened carefully at the end before the contestant won, spoiler #3 was about to say Hans Christan Anderson, so I would say he blew it, but was more slow than dumb.

You sure it's THIS show, and not the completely different Nickelodeon game show called Double Dare?

The real shock to me was that he withheld the Danny Kaye clue.

they didn't even give the third Dr. a chance to answer on the last one...cheats

His time had expired, as opposed to the earlier clues were he just said "no answer" right off the bat.

If you listen closely, he did know the answer but he said it after the buzzer. He was just slow to get it out.

$100 multiplied by 5 or 6 playings per taping? $600 in 1977 was good money. Heck, I'd take $600 today in a heartbeat.

Yea, he said "Hans Christian" right after the buzzer and through the audiences clapping.

Wow... that has to be the dumbest PhD I've ever seen on TV. It's amazing that he didn't know about Hans Christian Andersen's works. :-?

WOW.
I'm just as stunned as you that he won! How does a PhD miss that giveaway clue for Hans Christian Andersen?!
