From what I've seen the "Fighting Hopak" has a whole lot of kicking going on. I believe Aikido is more into using opponent's force against him (lots of throwing and such).

I do agree that the new Gopak is likely to be created recently, and has no historical backing. Hard to imagine real cossack doing back flips. But it gives people the feeling of national pride and identity,which is a good thing in my book(in moderation).

but i was under the impression Cossaks are formidable warriors on Horseback and have saved the Russians many times.

The same is true with weapons (hence the use of farming implements). In this case the effort is to preserve a form of the ancient style as a modern sport. Similarly to the Asian martial styles. Systema is the Russian counterpart, consider examining both Ryabko's and Kadochnikov's if you have not already done so.
