I have that same engine it was given to me by my tech teacher so i could fix it it looks exactly the same except it has a gold finish.Glad I found out what it is. How old is that model engine and how do you remove the top of the cylinder?
@TOPGEARisC00L you can use 10% up to 25% percent and fel with 20% percent caster oil, usually u can by these a local hobby shops and the sell mixed fuel ready to use i perfer 15%
I just looked on E-bay there is a whole rack of this old Cox stuff. Here's a list of one post, current bid $22 prop drive washers 9 small nose c'cases 6 large nose c'cases 5 straight nose c'cases 21 pistons 21 wrenches 3 packages of misc. screws 10 crankshafts 5 glow heads, they do glow, but are very rough 8 Glo-Bee heads, no plugs 1 NIP Cox fueler, goes in fuel can spout 3 plastic reed retainers 4 fuel can fillers 5 plastic postage stamp back covers 2 red, only about half
Had one of those on a FF golber Ranger (30 was it.....sheet balsa wing with lots of dihederal). I only got a couple of flights out of it, then couldn't get engine to run. I found it the other evening....should clean it out and see if she'll go. Even found a new 4(?)x 2(?) prop for it....metallic silver, they were easy to bust as I recall.
@gumbykevbo might be the copper reed thats bad. Try to get some newer plastic or steel reed on ebay like i did because my copper one almost rotted away and was not sealing well
@30GB That's possible, though the last time it ran it ran the tank out. I never lost a bronze .049 reed on hundreds of flights, ruined a few when cleaning engines though. Most likely culprit was a little piece of grass or suchlike under the reed. Anyone know what thickness mylar and/or PTFE would be appropriate for .020 reeds? Oh yeah, that was a Carl Goldberg plane...golber....heh!

Nice! I've been in the RC addiction for ages. A few years back my Dad gave me a 50yr old Cox .049. I cleaned the dirt out and she fired right up! (via the original glow-head, lol) I had no suitable props but actually had it turning a wooden 10x6, LOL. (I know, that's a sure way to burn it up but was all I had) Being full-throttle only, she was spinning so slow you could count the blade rotations, but it swung it like a champ! haha.
ive got one that has not been started in 50 years and i want to start it and i have been told it runs on diesel and caster oil but im not sure of the ratio
wow it must be sized by then you need to completely take it apart and clean before you run it and if it has like a adjustable top screw then it can run on diesel if not then its nitro
yeah its got the prop screw and its made out of brass i looked inside and every thing is tip top but im scared to start it because im not sure of the fuel mix and i dont want to ruin it ill post a video so you can see what it looks like
Just a general response to the video. From memory you just need to go to a model shop and buy nitro model fuel with 10-15% nitro and it. Castor oil fuel is a bit better if its an old engine for its first few runs, same with running it in (bit like a car with mineral vs synthetic oil). Once it's been run in then fuels with synthetic in them ought to be able to cut it.
dude try to find websites on these engines lol google is the best way just type in "cox .020 info" and it should show you stuff on them thats how i got some of my info from
the one i got dont work as well because it has too much oil or something but works great in bigger engines try to get air plane fuel or google what type cox engines take
thats a cox for ya. i pulled out a .049 i havent ran in about a year, all i did was put on a new plug, needle, and spring and prop, and it fired right up!
Nice work on the rebuild. Engine runs great and sounds good. Your description needs to be changed, this engine is a .020 Pee Wee. .010 Tee Dee was only available with a front crank valve throttle, the .020 you have is a rear reed valve with a mixture screw. Great find, supplies have run out on these engines.
I have 2 this engine for sale!

@andyboy4707 just unscrew it but if its too hard by hand then you have to make a tool your self or use pair of vice grips and rag to undo it

Estimado, una consulta, que tipo de combustible utiliza.? ya que adquirí uno de estos en una venta de bodega sin catalogo.
Saludos desde Chile.

You need at last 5% or more Nitromethane and a lot of Lubrication (about 20% Castor Oil)
to run these small Motor.

you can call that a cold start xD
