Couldn't agree more with you- every time I hear old Cars music, it brings back thoughs of my HS years. I still pop in the first album alot while driving.
LOve it .I attended the concert @ Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, 2 weeks after this album was released in 1979, The Cars played all the hits and other great songs from first 2 albums , just awesome sound although back then they didn't do much interesting on stage, just stood there & played the music. Sonicly though it was the best concert i ever attended :D !!!!
Listened to this on my walk-man cassette tape player, which was powered by dry cell lantern batteries worn on my custom government surplus ammo belt, playing cat & mouse with Russians under the North Atlantic. If your stuck in a tube under water for three-four months you might as well be listening to the best !
@thrasherman1981 Yeah, it is amazing what they call talent now in days. They won't let them in HOF untill they are dead, at that point it does not matter. But hey we appreciate the good music and pure talent. Rock on!
The best song they ever recorded!!!!! Benny Orr sang this with perfection!!!!! I, like he did, am suffering from the same disease and was also a bass player and singer back in the day. Long live Benny and his unique talent!!!
@yariteok I'm sorry. Keep him close to you, he was a hell of a musician and an inspiration to all of us. I never knew at the age of 5, he'd have such a profound effect on my life. His voice and music encourages me to stand on my own and to believe love exist somewhere.
Stay the Night is my favorite, always. Take care of yourself and pick up your bass again:) Play yor heart out and love the music
It's the cars that opened me up to bands like, Stereo Lab, Stereo Total, soft cell, gary numan, omd, the smiths, the cure, joy division, new order, eddie cochran, wanda jackson, joe jackson, the vibrators,
the cars are in my opinion one of the best bands to come out of the eigties. my father had every record and all through jr high and early high school these albums were always on my turntable, until my dad got tired of me highjacking his records and gave me heartbeat city for christmas. I was suprised he payed attetion to the music i was listening to.. it was cool we had the same taste. the cars "my teenage years".

@Eastonfan1 ... & i wanted to respond to you because just before i logged on here ... i was running an errand earlier this morning & was staring at a building with the name easton on it . strange .. but strange has been familiar lately.
@Eastonfan1 ... i can only describe the feeling id get when the first chords came on the radio ... as if a door to a different room inside me would open.
This is my favorite song by The Cars. I liked Ben's songs much better than Rick's. I thought Ben had a much better voice. I was sad when I learned he had died. I am sorry to hear he didn't care for this song. I Really love it.
@tomrom7 HI tomron7; I'm not sure if you are aware, but Ben Orr released a solo album called "The Lace" in the mid-80's at the height of The Cars. Ben was multi-talented and was an excellent song writer, but Ric would not allow Ben or any of the others contribute their music to The Cars line up :-( Ric has been video taped saying this and it's available on You Tube.
Listen to "Coming Up You" on "Door to Door" and listen to Ben's solo work & you will hear similarity.
@Rschrieber They didn't play this song live because this was Benjamin's least favorite song. He wouldn't perform this song live. I can't understand why.... One of his best!!!
reminds me of picking salmonberries for cash in kodiak when i was a wee lad, listening to this cassette in a boombox over and over with my best friend matt morey
any experts out there want to take a crack at the synth that Greg is playing in this song? The Roland Jupiter 8 did not appear until 1981, and he did play that one (according to vintage synth explorer) but this synth had to be something else since its in 1979. Thanks in advance.
@ladime79 yes it is, but what is it? I know Greg played a Prophet 5 and then added a Jupiter 8 in 1981, but this doesn't have the Prophet 5 sound, unless he added some patches from another synth.
Ben Orr sang this song perfectly... Watch The Cars video called "You are the Girl" and you will see something very strange. The girl on the monitor starts flashing calendar dates (two exactly), one of the dates is April 2000. Thats the month Ben Orr found out he had terminal cancer and he died 6 months later. The video was made way back in 1987. Strange how things like that just happen, eh?
