ME1's music was perfect for the setting and the plot. ME2's sounded like a run-of-the-mill action movie's OST. I've heard rumors that ME3 is abandoning almost all synth elements. Hopefully they're only that: Rumors.

What's ironic is that the game ~still~ appears in Mass Effect 2 (at the very beginning, in the opening cutscene). So evidently the developers didn't forget about it. (I've noticed that a lot of the "hub" areas -- the Normandy, the Citadel, and perhaps some of the other planets with towns -- don't seem to have actual music for them, or at least not to the degree that the first game had.)
