@dustinshawnjarvis The extra 20 lbs of fat is the part that makes no sense. Keep in mind that when he talks about weight, he's talking about weight as part of a system. Those ounces add up and can make the difference between making it up the mountain or not. Check out some of his adventure videos. If you've ever talked to guys that climb the big mountains, they will tell you all kinds of tricks to cut down weight...like taking the cardboard ring out of their toiletpaper. It adds up. -- Veri
@dustinshawnjarvis The .6 ounces are detached from your body. That is why you can carry a Large Framed Backpack that weighs 80 pounds when the sternum strap and waist straps are keeping that weight tight to your body. Try swinging 20 pounds around on your hand and tell me how it feels.
@dustinshawnjarvis The fact that you assume everyone has 20 pounds of extra fat on them doesn't make sense. I for one don't, and I'm sure a significant number of viewers don't. If you do, then why are you criticizing others for it? If you don't, then your comment doesn't even apply to you and thus makes no sense.
FWIW, my 1st Gen Delica's pivot is kinda tight. To be fair, I got it used, and it was kinda gritty at first, but oiling the pivot and repeated opening and closing has smoothed that out, but it's still rather tight. I can't flick it open the way I can do with my Mini Grip.
It is really funny that Nutn says this is a specific review. In modern terms, this is a really short review.. His videos now are half an hour to 45 minutes long.
I think that some people are turned off by some of Spyderco's designs because of the FRN handles, which look pretty much like plastic, even though they're not plastic per se. I admit that this was a bit of a sticking point for me. Despite that, I just got done ordering a Spyderco Tenacious (which has G-10 handle scales). I'm starting to warm up to Spyderco's designs, and I might even spring for some of their FRN-handled knives if I really like the Tenacious.
Lots of people are also put off by the blade shapes. I've seen that come up on the forums. I was one of them for the longest time, but when the opportunity presented itself to get a Delica for $9, I jumped on it, even though I still thought it was a funny-looking knife. Still do, but I've found it's easier for me to open with my weak hand than my BM 556's thumb studs. That's reserved for my other hand. So the ugly little Delica's grown on me. LOL
i am a 16 year old australian and think what your doing with the tfp is great. when i first started watching your vid s i thought you were crazy because in australia no one has a gun and carrying a knife is crazy. on further thinking about your ideas like the sheepdog concept i really think your right. i am very wary of being brainwashed but realised that i was being brainwashed by the government. one thing though i that what do you say about iresponsible people having guns?
I have been thinking about one of these knives seeing as how its a completely ambidextrous knife. An it is really not all that expensive of a knife to purchase.
@knoweroftanks If you want pretty, then buy a custom made knife, if you want a knife that is going to put Fuction befor Form and get the job done, then you buy a spyderco.
@knoweroftanks Looks matter if you're choosing a toy or a piece of art, but for a tool, looks are irrelevant and make actually lead you astray. I know a guy with a Rambo knife, but he wouldn't consider it using it for anything other than display.
There are many practical advantages to the Spyderco design for EDCs.
(I just ordered a Delica 4 to compliment my Cold Steel SRK survival knife!)
Im curious to know what you guys here viewing this video think about this,If you were 15 (like me) and you wanted a good knife to carry around, would you carry a delica?I really want one but I'm not sure its friendly looking enough that I wouldn't look like a "troublemaker" lol. Thanks in advance!
@kingmanted If you still want a delica but arent sure if its friendly enough, get one of the coloured ones. As of right now, you can get full flat ground (will slice better) delicas in a variety of friendly looking colours. As for would I carry a delica, yes. But if i thought more than a few people would see me using it i would carry a dragonfly. Although, its pretty unfriendly around here for knives.
Just got a Delica 1 (my first spyderco) in what appears to be unused condition and it looks like Spyderco went back to the Delica 1 handle shape with the Delica 4. The handle on that Delica 3 looks like it's a bit shorter than the Delica 4. There is no Boye detent on my Delica which allows the line along the back to flow more smoothly, to my eye anyway. Some of spyderco's knives strike me as a bit iPod-ish, now that I think about it--constantly changing the design one way or another.
Just wondering, do you have any opinion on the Delica 4's modified tip? It's supposed to increase the tip strength, but I kind of think it would take away from penetration power. I like a good tip, and would value any insight.
The problem with the Delica 3 is that the single point clip attachment would act as a pivot, the clip would rotate in time and tear the clip plastic recess in the handle. Happened to two of mine(yeah, I love the Delica too).
The fourth gen Delica 3 bolts clip support, permitted by the liner, is far, far superior.
Firstable sorry if my English is not good haha. As a christmas gift an uncle of my gave to me this knife because he knows I getting into those adventures sports and he brought one from USA. My question is if this is a survival knife or is just a daily use knife, I mean if i can use this in the forest, etc. Again sorry if my English is bad. Thaks for anwer.
The reason they changed the tip from Delica 3 to Delica 4, is that people had problems with the pointy blade shape. It had less angle to it, making it vulnerable under stress. So Spyderco changed the tip's geometry by adding a slight downcurve, increasing the tip's angle. Resulting in more strength in the tip. You might not have that problem, if you know how to properly use and take care of your knives. They did it for marketing, just like you said with the nested steel liners.
I don't understand how you can question the steel liners. The one complaint I had about the Delica 3 and any Spyderco knives without steel liners is that they felt weak. The liners in the Delica 4 make it feel "stronger" to me. An EDC knife to me should make you feel confident to use it when ever needed. It it feels weak to me, I wouldn't trust it. At .6 ounces it is worth it and a big improvement over the Delica 3.
The Delica 2/3 clip is the only bad part o the knife. It pops off periodically no matter how many times I've tightened it. The triple bolted clip on the 4 (same design as the Endura it looks like) looks like a big improvement.
They will do the job, however I tend to go aginst the grain I use no "skinning implements" I use a small 4'' fillet knife and a steady hand, with a fillet knife and a steady hand you will never go back to conventional skinning implements! trust me on this!
im not sure which is better, mini grip or delica, but i sent out catalog requests to every manufacturer 6 months ago and spyderco was the only one that sent me one, so my business is going to them.
hey quick question for ya and maybe a video request on what you want to do, i just got a job where i do alot of salt water work and diving in fresh and salt water and with my local knife laws i cant carry a fixed blade or any large folders so i bought the delica 4 how would you suggest i caryy it while i dive and do anything in water as i have lost knives just clipped to my uniform before. thanks
@punksnotdead543 with the amount of subscribers and question nutnfancy gets, this would have to be his full time job in order to be able to get back to everyone.
Dont carry your Delica 4 when you're diving or working with water in general because the steel liners in between the FRN handle and the liners will rust. The Salt 1, Paific Salt, or Atlantic Salt would be a good choice. As for a way to carry it you could use the pocket clip; on Spyderco's they make 'em grip really tight so you wont have to worry about it falling out when your horizontal or upside down or anything.
I can't believe it! I just bought a Spiderco Delica 4 on the LL Bean website last night, ($79.00) and then I found this review on youtube. Cool. Looks like I picked the right knife. Thanks for the video.
I don't know why you are getting thumbs down, but I have the endura and love it, Main reason ppl go Delica is bc it is smaller and Legal. Due to many states strict knife laws endura is too big and illegal. Also this knife is purely a small EDC knife for small tasks. Endura handles heavier tasks as well as small.
I love my Delica but it has some slight blade play. I'm never happy with blade play but it doesn't keep me from being able to use my knife. Great review, thank you.
I recently sent my 3yo Delica 4 to Tom Krein for a Full Flat Grind treatment. Now it is like sharp like a laser. Thinner blade makes for a great slicer.
I love nutn's opinion but to me the Delica 4 is to light. I like the knife but I like to be able to feel the knife in my hand. Maybe it's just the size of the D4, maybe I'd be more impressed with the Endura 4. I like a knife I know is on me. Unlike Nutn I have a minimum weight requirement I came up with at a trip to Cabelas. I like a knife with a minimum of 3 or 3.5 oz and I max out at 5 - 5.5 oz To me.5 oz. is nothing. I like the CRKT My Tighe, I'm buying one soon
can someone please inform me of the best spyderco knife. i would like a knife which has slash and stab ability. ive looked at their website but i am lost for choice. and their site isnt very user freindly.
I wouldn't mind a longer blade, but Seattle has blade length laws and it's not worth the potential hassle. Plus, I tend to follow the law. (I'm just funny that way).
I have this knife, I literally have it in my jacket every single day. It works great and it's left handed friendly if you move the carry clip over to the other side. A big feature for a lefty.
I think you just saved me some money. I need to replace my beloved Delica, which has gone AWOL, and I think I'll be better off cruising the auction sites for a used one than buying one of the new ones. Thanks much.
I just bought the delica 4 and I have to say I'm disappointed. My SAK is sharper than this knife than a long shot and I cant seem to get it sharp. So many people like this knife so I'm guessing I got a fluke. Any suggestions?
i would definitely sharpen the blade. vg10 is very good quality steel and is used in a lot of different environments. kitchen utility, carry blades, custom designs, laminated blades, etc.. give it a go!
I lost my Delica and decided to take that as an excuse to try some new blades... I think I'll have to get another; nothing else I've tried fits the bill quite like the Delica.
Excellent vid Nutnfancy. I do prefer the Delica III personally due to the high saber grind and the pointy tip. Sounds crazy too but I like the old clips with the barrel bolt.
i have the delica 3 i got in death valley i think the previus owner wore the knife outside coz the clip was loose when i found it. also the lock doesnt work so good too bad its kool knife though
halomaniac, now I could be wrong but I think the pupose of steel liners is to increase ridgidity and stop flexing in the handle, in the event that side to side torque is applied to the knife, not to strenghten the lock. On a random side note, nice taste in games.
Thanks for the great reviews Nutnfancy! I always enjoy your reviews and this video helped me choose to go with the Delica 4 for EDC. I just picked one up today.
You are an absolute knife-nut! I have the D4 and it is awesome. It is my first choice year-round carry piece. After nearly three years I took advantage of Spyderco's free sharpening, great guys! Now its a surgical instrument again. Good review.
I prefer the Delica 4 over the Delica 3. The steel liners, thickness and the somewhat shallower point makes it usable for tougher jobs and it has made the use of harder steels possible (zdp-189)
Also the clip can be used up or down left or right on the Delica 4.
I have the older one, I don't know which one.. Maybe gen 1 or 2. It does not have the metal clip and does not say what kind of metal it is. I guess it's AUS4 or something... Got the serrated version, love it. I use it to cut cardboard boxes and tape at work. Though I can't flick it out that fast as in the video, mine seems stiff. But it's old now, I got it from my brother which used it a lot so. :)
Good food for thought. Due to my nature of daily assignments, I prefer 4 as I can carry it tip down, for fast application. The weight also reminds me that it's there. And I feel that is's stronger. Anyhow, I also own a few 3's and use them occasionally off duty. Tks for good review.
Nice to see an individual review on the Delica. Perfect for EDC is right. Size is A+ is my book. For me I prefer a 3 to 3.5" blade for EDC work and this one does it in a weight friendly package. All good things to be said. Thanks Nutnfancy. Jet over and out
Agreed, nice review. I agree with Fiberkneip that the cutout on the lock makes it easier to find without looking.
Also I agree that weight for no reason is a negative. But I think that when you pay 50 or 60 bucks for a knife you want to feel like you are getting a lot of knife. My guess is that steel liners make people feel like they are getting more knife since most of us can carry one more ounce. I think Spyderco is at least trying to do right by the customer.
take apart the delica 4 and take out the steel liners

The Delica 2/3 clip is the only bad part o the knife. It pops off periodically no matter how many times I've tightened it. The triple bolted clip on the 4 (same design as the Endura it looks like) looks like a big improvement.

I agree with your philosophy and specific advice. I appreciate your tips e.g. using tape to improve control. Thank you.

Does anyone have experience using this knife skinning, deer, elk, or antelope? What was your experience?
mtsrn 2 years ago
They will do the job, however I tend to go aginst the grain I use no "skinning implements" I use a small 4'' fillet knife and a steady hand, with a fillet knife and a steady hand you will never go back to conventional skinning implements! trust me on this!

im not sure which is better, mini grip or delica, but i sent out catalog requests to every manufacturer 6 months ago and spyderco was the only one that sent me one, so my business is going to them.

yea, sometimes companies dont heed your catalog requests........
1CouldaHadaV8 2 years ago
hey quick question for ya and maybe a video request on what you want to do, i just got a job where i do alot of salt water work and diving in fresh and salt water and with my local knife laws i cant carry a fixed blade or any large folders so i bought the delica 4 how would you suggest i caryy it while i dive and do anything in water as i have lost knives just clipped to my uniform before. thanks
ghost15933 2 years ago
you should have bought the salt 1, its the delica with a h1 steel blade so it cant rust at all.

Thanks for the video.

you can order it from walmart's site for 52 bucks, same knife.

jesus, i just bought mine off walmarts site for 52 bucks..
my knife collection is now a centofante 3 and soon the delica 4!
SGardner11 2 years ago
I don't know what to pick between the delica and the endura. The endura is only 5$ more and you get a lot of blade lenght! O_O
Fullblaster 2 years ago
I don't know why you are getting thumbs down, but I have the endura and love it, Main reason ppl go Delica is bc it is smaller and Legal. Due to many states strict knife laws endura is too big and illegal. Also this knife is purely a small EDC knife for small tasks. Endura handles heavier tasks as well as small.

Shoud I get a delica or a benchmade 556"

I recently sent my 3yo Delica 4 to Tom Krein for a Full Flat Grind treatment. Now it is like sharp like a laser. Thinner blade makes for a great slicer.
It is now the favorite in my EDC rotation.

I don't like the pocket clip on the D3. I have it on a Endure and it moves too easily, hard to tighten down.
bigbluemsp 2 years ago
hey nutin can you do a vid showing how to install the spyderco delica lightweight kit that makes the delica lighter and adjustable
skil1977 2 years ago
I love nutn's opinion but to me the Delica 4 is to light. I like the knife but I like to be able to feel the knife in my hand. Maybe it's just the size of the D4, maybe I'd be more impressed with the Endura 4. I like a knife I know is on me. Unlike Nutn I have a minimum weight requirement I came up with at a trip to Cabelas. I like a knife with a minimum of 3 or 3.5 oz and I max out at 5 - 5.5 oz To me.5 oz. is nothing. I like the CRKT My Tighe, I'm buying one soon

That "traction tape of the sk8board variety" will totally fall off, and leave the thumb ramp sticky. You should use a dremel, or file instead.

What is the best Spyderco EDC knife you would recommend
sgtmartin10 2 years ago
great but i would of liked see a comparisin in sharpness or just showing what they are good at compared to other knives.
duff835 2 years ago
i think the grind is lower on the 4 because the spyderhole is bigger and you cant grind all the way up to it.
halomaniac94 2 years ago
not true, look at the tenacious. it has ffg (full flat grind) and it doesn't affect the spyderhole

can someone please inform me of the best spyderco knife. i would like a knife which has slash and stab ability. ive looked at their website but i am lost for choice. and their site isnt very user freindly.

Look at Spyderco Military or Spyderco Police.

Thanks for the review.
I carry a pair of Delica 3's. Love them.

Any suggestions?
flyers345 2 years ago
i would definitely sharpen the blade. vg10 is very good quality steel and is used in a lot of different environments. kitchen utility, carry blades, custom designs, laminated blades, etc.. give it a go!
FOILus 2 years ago
The thing that bothers me on that knife is that tiny blade
ronadish1 2 years ago
There is a larger one called the "Endura". Same design..
FOILus 2 years ago
I lost my Delica and decided to take that as an excuse to try some new blades... I think I'll have to get another; nothing else I've tried fits the bill quite like the Delica.
PlatonicKamel 2 years ago
How did that grip tape hold up?
I'd be afraid of it coming off or that it would wear holes in my pocket.
redteamla 3 years ago
If you use alcohol to clean it beforehand and don't have any loose corners it should hold well enough
grayphox 2 years ago
Excellent vid Nutnfancy. I do prefer the Delica III personally due to the high saber grind and the pointy tip. Sounds crazy too but I like the old clips with the barrel bolt.

i have the delica 3 i got in death valley i think the previus owner wore the knife outside coz the clip was loose when i found it. also the lock doesnt work so good too bad its kool knife though

great vid;where do you like to by your knifes online
ZAKK2332 3 years ago
nutnfancy, you always criticize the weakness of a knive's lock but then when a company tries to make it stronger with liners, you don't like it.
halomaniac94 3 years ago
halomaniac, now I could be wrong but I think the pupose of steel liners is to increase ridgidity and stop flexing in the handle, in the event that side to side torque is applied to the knife, not to strenghten the lock.

Good review.
illinoisGOP 3 years ago
I prefer the Delica 4 over the Delica 3. The steel liners, thickness and the somewhat shallower point makes it usable for tougher jobs and it has made the use of harder steels possible (zdp-189)
Also the clip can be used up or down left or right on the Delica 4.
gimepepe 3 years ago

Tks for good review.
unclevit 3 years ago
Nice to see an individual review on the Delica. Perfect for EDC is right. Size is A+ is my book. For me I prefer a 3 to 3.5" blade for EDC work and this one does it in a weight friendly package. All good things to be said. Thanks Nutnfancy. Jet over and out
jetfuel545 3 years ago
Agreed, nice review. I agree with Fiberkneip that the cutout on the lock makes it easier to find without looking.
Also I agree that weight for no reason is a negative. But I think that when you pay 50 or 60 bucks for a knife you want to feel like you are getting a lot of knife. My guess is that steel liners make people feel like they are getting more knife since most of us can carry one more ounce. I think Spyderco is at least trying to do right by the customer.
Great job.
