I was listening to this song with a girl I have been friends with for a long time. We were just lounging around. At 3:17 we both start going off and she knew every word. Think I may have fallen in love at that moment...
I always thought it was "The heart brings you back" and I thought it was a love song. Now I really wish that I never found the lyrics out. A song about a song... lame.

I cant imagine anyone today having the talent or originality to make music like this again. I may have been a child of the 80's but I think the 90's had a much better soundtrack....
@matteblack357 I'm born in the 80's and I have to agree with you...the 90's had the best music. Not only rock or pop. It had good rap, pop, rock, etc. Nowadays the music is all garbage. Miley Cyrus, Kesha? Puh-leese.
i was 12 , i didn't really listen to the words of the music as much as the hook, when this song came out and i liked it. Now i know why i liked it so much; other than the hook this song speaks more truth than any other song. ILOVE IT!!!
I saw a more recent picture of John Popper, good god he lost a lot of weight lol, looking great, though that doesnt really matter, as long as they're making sick music like this
this song popped into my head completely at random today. I primarily listen to heavy metal and progressive rock, but a great song is a great song right? The "hook" in this song is catchy as hell, great playing. and great lyrics and vocals to go with it.
If you only read the lyrics you will think that the song is only making fun of music fans who do not listen to the words of a song and are only drawn in by the "hook".
However, if you watch the video you'll see that it's a much bigger scale. The song is about how people buy into empty speech.
For example, Beauty contestant respondents, they go on as long as it takes with as much PC crap they can spew until their minute is up.
If you have already watched this video try just reading the lyrics and understanding them....you will come away from this video knowing its a great song.
is it just me or does he need to learn how to sing his words clearer, more then half the shit he said in this song sounds like something else...still good though amazing singer non the less
I like how he made the interpretation so difficult that the later invention of YouTube and modernization of technology today has only made it more convenient for people to argue about how difficult the interpretation was really meant to be, now that we are in the future.
The interpretation is really simple actually. Popper is singing about how music listeners only listen to the tune of a song, and not to its lyrics or deeper meaning. He's singing about how the "hook"; the catchy repeated phrase of a song, is the only thing that most people pay attention to. The quick part at the end expresses his frustration and how he won't sink to that kind of mindlessness just to attract fans.
On the right track, but that's exactly what he says he'll do if he must. "if i'm feeling stuck and need a buck, i won't rely on luck because the -refrain-"
The song is a contradictory, a slap in the face to listeners who love it and don't know why, and a devilish nod to those who do.
"The Hook" is a term is a songwriting term for the key line of the chorus. The song is talking about how people instinctively get emotionally manipulated by this rather than listening to the what a song is actually saying.
You may be playing too much into the lyrics. It's a simple "I'm a fuck-up" from a guy's point of view talking or singing to his girlfriend (or wife). It's not necessarily the words that will bring the girlfriend to possibly forgive him, but rather something else ("the hook").
Actually, the interpretation is much simpler than you'll care to admit. While I'll admit my interpretation is just one of many, but the song really isn't that deep.
"Suck it suck it in suck it in if your rin tin tin or ann boleyn, make this smooth move and than begin to see what you do to me, this MTV is not for free, it's so PC it's killing me so desperatly I'll sing to thee of love, sure, but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self." ... I thought it was pretty obvious that he was singing about the polarized state of music... and that's not what a hook is.
Granted that the intent of the song is about the polarization and the crass commercialization of music, but when I first heard it I thought it had to do more with relationships. You're right about the interpretation, but I still like my original (even if it may be wrong.)
He's taking the piss out of how songwriters can write about absolute crap, but if they sing it in a certain way people think it has to have a really deep meaning, that's all this song is.
The song is making fun of itself at the part with the politician talking.
starting with "there is someting amiss"
especially at the "to confuse the issue I refer to familiar heroes from long ago" and then talking about peter pan (familiar hero). Which really is confusing if you wonder what that has to do with this song. I must say lyrics get more confusing and deep the more you think about them.
If your confused its because your thinking too much, shut your mind off and stop being conned, just feel it... These lyrics in their entirety are THEE TRUTH. Please believe(in yourself)
Glenn Beck's "hook" is fear. If he can keep his fans fearful of the "other's" (whomever that may be this week), they will continue to crowd around him and take his rhetoric as truth, as opposed to searching out the truth themselves.
If you go with that interpretation, then Glenn's hook is that there are more people out there who are more bat-shit crazy than he could ever possibly be at this time. Glenn's character on FOX is just that a character, it's not who he really is, much like Stephen Colbert's character on the Colbert Report. But the majority of the thinking-for-themsleves crowd knows that Colbert and Beck are just an act.
I remebr when I first heard this song at the end of that 1995 movie "She Fought Alone," where Tiffani Theissen is driving down the street, I spent like 3 days looking for the name and artist, i fell in love with this song!!! It's got the best harmonica solo ever!!!!!!!!!!
I love how the point of the song is that the audience doesn't care what he's singing about, and nobody knows it because they don't listen to the words or can't understand them. Thanks for putting the subtitles on!
