  • God damn his harmonica is unbelievable. Fucking legend

  • John Popper is a the best harmonica player EVER! There is no one else that can make it do what Popper can! He took that instrument and made it HIS!

  • this song has a Vodoo spell on me!

  • I was listening to this song with a girl I have been friends with for a long time. We were just lounging around. At 3:17 we both start going off and she knew every word. Think I may have fallen in love at that moment...

  • @codimis Now that's romance!

  • This brings back fond memories! I love the '90s

  • 3:15 - epic.

  • Is that Christian Bale on drums??

  • best harmonica solo ever? its great but you should really listen to J. Geils Band

  • I always thought it was "The heart brings you back" and I thought it was a love song. Now I really wish that I never found the lyrics out. A song about a song... lame.

  • @casedinlight

So you're mad because it actually has a unique creative vision rather than just being another generic love song?

  • @rapsody You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love longs. I look around me and I see it isn't so.

But honestly, I liked it as a love-song, even though it's not. It just burst my bubble.

  • I love this so much it gives me great memories jamming it in my parent's van lol

  • 5 people have no taste in music

  • thanks you uploader for this song, i'm a big fan of popper.

i needed to redownload it cause my kid fragged my pc and i had to get a new one,

im glad someone put it out with the lyrics...i never really knew what was being said until now.

So big props. go out to you ericorechenmacher.

  • *too >>> where needed

  • PACHELBEL LIVES ON!!!!

  • Dios!!!! al fin la encontré , hace años buscaba esta canción, saber q me encantaba tanto y no recordar ni quien la cantaba y mucho menos el nombre d la canción, pos grax por ponerle sub

  • "So Portland, maybe it wasn't our city. Man, where are the anthems of our youth? What happened to music that meant something? The Who at the Kingdome or Kiss at the Coliseum. Where is the "Misty Mountain Hop"? Where is the "Iron Man" of today? ...Just remember one thing, we are loved in Belgium and in Italy." -Cliff Poncier

Am I like Cliff? Asking this question w/Eddie Vedder in the room? Is there any good music today? Maybe there is but I'm just out of touch. The 90s were over too too soon.

  • @austntexan Popular shit is to aimed at having a good time and reveling in ignorance. I think nowadays (of course with a few exceptions) you need to pretty much have your finger on the pulse of something truly magnificent to spot it, cause the mainstream is mainly pumping out soulless party and bullshit records that cater to much to immature minds.

  • its funny how I got this group mixed up with sister hazel they both sound alike! lol!

  • i remember dis shit dropping, man the days i spend in south america.

  • Greatness!

  • THE BLUES TRAVELERS WAS THE 90s along with BUSH NIRVANA PEARL JAM CRANBERRIES etc... GOD I MISS THOSES DAYS 2!!!

  • The Brunette should have won....

  • suck it in suck it in suck it in!best god damn part!

  • i thought it was saying: "the heart brings you back" . WHen I found out it was hook" , the song was ruined for me unitil Jmath's comment. i was like, "this song is about trucking nothing". but alas, i understand t'was the point :I

  • this song is relevant today when i think of obama

  • LOVE, LOVE this amazing song, so feel good:-)

  • i remember that conan when he had them on and was dangling a sandwich to the singer and he stopped singing

  • This song is not only awesome but hillarious.

  • Only found one reference to Pachelbel's cannon; the chord progression is straight from this baroque piece.

  • Amazing song and mind blowing harmonica solo!!! In my opinion John Popper is to harmonica as Yngwie Malmsteen is to guitar...

  • The actor in this video died last year. Used to be on MTV -- Ken Olin (?).

  • @mikedrud

    Ken Olin is not dead!

  • @mikedrud The guy's name was Ken Ober. He used to be the host of MTV's remote control game show.

  • @watchdogdad78

That's right. Ober. Yeah, the dead guy.

  • @watchdogdad78 That's right... Ober.

  • These guys were playing at Woodstock II when I was setting up camp on the Friday. I walked to in sight of the stage pulled up a piece of ground sat and watched the show. His rendition of Hendrixs' rendition of The Star Spangled Banner on the harmonica was amazing.

  • Love the song and miss inflection at 0:34, WOW !!

  • love the bass

  • That harmonica.... wow. This song totally amazes me, and i must say i fear we will never hear the likes of this music again.

  • god John's voice is amazing. Nothing like it since.

  • that big bastard sings his ass off, helluva collaboration with metallica on tuesdays gone

  • One of the greatest songs ever recorded !

  • DARN YOU PACHELBEL!!

  • most badass harmonica solo EVER

  • badass!

  • I cant imagine anyone today having the talent or originality to make music like this again. I may have been a child of the 80's but I think the 90's had a much better soundtrack....

  • @matteblack357 I'm born in the 80's and I have to agree with you...the 90's had the best music. Not only rock or pop. It had good rap, pop, rock, etc. Nowadays the music is all garbage. Miley Cyrus, Kesha? Puh-leese.

  • @TonyVisciardi Yeah, its hard to find any popular artist who has any genuine talent, even rap was 100 times better then too

  • @mjennings80 lol

  • did a little corky song to this instrumental check my vids...hope ya like.

  • oh i luv this so much!!! those were the good old dayz

  • my fat man fantasy..... ;)

  • holy geez, this song is great, meaninglessness of 95% of songs, political pandering exposed, and even a peter pan reference

  • @ineternitypast

    Thats the point.

its about the "hook", are series a notes arrainged in a tempo that makes you listen

    its nothing new

look it up on Wikpepedia, its a source to start anyway

  • @1dirkmanchest

thank you, but i (along with everyone else who has ever heard more than 3 songs) already knew what a "hook" was

can you check real quick and get back with us if "Wikpepedia" has a spell check function?

  • Comment removed

  • i was 12 , i didn't really listen to the words of the music as much as the hook, when this song came out and i liked it. Now i know why i liked it so much; other than the hook this song speaks more truth than any other song. ILOVE IT!!!

  • I said it before and Ill say it again thats one soulful white cat. Sing a song brother!

  • I saw a more recent picture of John Popper, good god he lost a lot of weight lol, looking great, though that doesnt really matter, as long as they're making sick music like this

  • this song popped into my head completely at random today. I primarily listen to heavy metal and progressive rock, but a great song is a great song right? The "hook" in this song is catchy as hell, great playing. and great lyrics and vocals to go with it.

  • sounds just like canon

  • its bcuz theyre both based off of pachelbels cannon

  • If you only read the lyrics you will think that the song is only making fun of music fans who do not listen to the words of a song and are only drawn in by the "hook".

However, if you watch the video you'll see that it's a much bigger scale. The song is about how people buy into empty speech.

For example, Beauty contestant respondents, they go on as long as it takes with as much PC crap they can spew until their minute is up.

Need I go on about politicians?

    Great Song. Siiiiiick Harmonica!

  • If you have already watched this video try just reading the lyrics and understanding them....you will come away from this video knowing its a great song.

  • Omg, luv this damn song, I am so glad the words on here, all this time I've been saying the "hook brings pain" LOL

  • is it just me or does he need to learn how to sing his words clearer, more then half the shit he said in this song sounds like something else...still good though amazing singer non the less

  • That dude is jon popper

  • This dude makes that harmonica squeal wtf i didnt know it could sound that great!

That brunette who is lip singing in the beginning is fucking sexxy as hell!

  • this song is genius! :)

  • RIP Ken Ober

  • BELLISSIMA!!

  • I like how he made the interpretation so difficult that the later invention of YouTube and modernization of technology today has only made it more convenient for people to argue about how difficult the interpretation was really meant to be, now that we are in the future.

  • great song, often overlooked

  • The interpretation is really simple actually. Popper is singing about how music listeners only listen to the tune of a song, and not to its lyrics or deeper meaning. He's singing about how the "hook"; the catchy repeated phrase of a song, is the only thing that most people pay attention to. The quick part at the end expresses his frustration and how he won't sink to that kind of mindlessness just to attract fans.

  • @shinigami1214

On the right track, but that's exactly what he says he'll do if he must. "if i'm feeling stuck and need a buck, i won't rely on luck because the -refrain-"

The song is a contradictory, a slap in the face to listeners who love it and don't know why, and a devilish nod to those who do.

  • This song is actually about...

    Nothing...

He sings it at the beginning...

He can say/sing whatever he wants, If he sings it quite right everybody will find something in it...

very good song to, love the lyrics....

  • "The Hook" is a term is a songwriting term for the key line of the chorus. The song is talking about how people instinctively get emotionally manipulated by this rather than listening to the what a song is actually saying.

  • too great just epic

  • Comment removed

  • You may be playing too much into the lyrics. It's a simple "I'm a fuck-up" from a guy's point of view talking or singing to his girlfriend (or wife). It's not necessarily the words that will bring the girlfriend to possibly forgive him, but rather something else ("the hook").

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry monkey but that is a terrible interpretation of what these lyrics are about... much much deeper than that imo.

  • Actually, the interpretation is much simpler than you'll care to admit. While I'll admit my interpretation is just one of many, but the song really isn't that deep.

  • @monkeyboyiv

"Suck it suck it in suck it in if your rin tin tin or ann boleyn, make this smooth move and than begin to see what you do to me, this MTV is not for free, it's so PC it's killing me so desperatly I'll sing to thee of love, sure, but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self." ... I thought it was pretty obvious that he was singing about the polarized state of music... and that's not what a hook is.

  • Granted that the intent of the song is about the polarization and the crass commercialization of music, but when I first heard it I thought it had to do more with relationships. You're right about the interpretation, but I still like my original (even if it may be wrong.)

  • Nice job with the subtitles! Except, it's a ditty, not a diddy.

  • He's taking the piss out of how songwriters can write about absolute crap, but if they sing it in a certain way people think it has to have a really deep meaning, that's all this song is.

  • The song is making fun of itself at the part with the politician talking.

starting with "there is someting amiss"

especially at the "to confuse the issue I refer to familiar heroes from long ago" and then talking about peter pan (familiar hero). Which really is confusing if you wonder what that has to do with this song. I must say lyrics get more confusing and deep the more you think about them.

  • @4san

If your confused its because your thinking too much, shut your mind off and stop being conned, just feel it... These lyrics in their entirety are THEE TRUTH. Please believe(in yourself)

  • "familiar heros from long ago", "no matter how much peter loves her",and "what made the pan refuse to grow".

weird reference to peter pan & wendy?

    never growing up?

    captain HOOK?

now that i know the lyrics, my mind hurts.

    thanks alot.

  • also, nice tribute to orsen wells & "citizen kane".

    brilliant.

  • pretty sure that right there blew my mind =o

  • Oh my god. I just realized that you can these lyrics to almost everything that glenn beck says. Try thinking about it that way, it awesome!

(It doesn't matter what i say, I'm being insincere and I don't mean any of this, to confuse the issue I'll refer)

But what is glenn's "Hook"? I don't know.

  • worst comment left on a video ever

  • Glenn Beck's "hook" is fear. If he can keep his fans fearful of the "other's" (whomever that may be this week), they will continue to crowd around him and take his rhetoric as truth, as opposed to searching out the truth themselves.

  • If you go with that interpretation, then Glenn's hook is that there are more people out there who are more bat-shit crazy than he could ever possibly be at this time. Glenn's character on FOX is just that a character, it's not who he really is, much like Stephen Colbert's character on the Colbert Report. But the majority of the thinking-for-themsleves crowd knows that Colbert and Beck are just an act.

  • great song

  • R.I.P. Ken Ober!

  • Love how this song makes fun of every song in its own way. ... and agreed best harmonica solo ever.

  • @Jmath446 name 3 other harmonica solos. bet you can't.

  • amazing song with great lyrics

  • I remebr when I first heard this song at the end of that 1995 movie "She Fought Alone," where Tiffani Theissen is driving down the street, I spent like 3 days looking for the name and artist, i fell in love with this song!!! It's got the best harmonica solo ever!!!!!!!!!!

  • Man i miss the 90's

  • Everyone does. They'll be back soon.

  • @Phenry51 man i miss your mom

  • Un Icono de la decada de los 90's

    VIVA BLUES TRAVELER

  • Good song :)

  • one of the only harmonica virtuosos in the world, the man has regenerated the instrument. All Hail Popper!

  • Did you know that BT was in the 2nd Blues Brothers movie, too?

  • Man this song takes me back!

  • I like how "runaround" video flashes several times at the end.

  • Popper has such a powerful voice and range.

    God damn.

  • Yeah, I totally agree. The first time I saw him, to be honest, I didn't expect much, but I found myself to be totally wrong!

  • I love how the point of the song is that the audience doesn't care what he's singing about, and nobody knows it because they don't listen to the words or can't understand them. Thanks for putting the subtitles on!

  • I LOVE this song!!! Especially hope fast Popper sings at the end!
