TripleOctaveMusic. Take some deep breaths. This would not sound nearly as cool without the rhythm section. Or even with virtually any other rhythm section there. They all know each other so way, and play like it.
What a Band! Everything is so right! The amazing playing and soloing and of course the 90's Clothes (Mehldau's too big jacket, and McBride's Art Blakey Shirt). Great! It's so cool to see them having fun while playing a blues in Eb.
it's nice to hear mehldau playing straight ahead once in a while...but i'm glad he doesn't always play this way. his innovation is what makes him unique, and as good as he plays in this video, i'm glad he branched out and took on his own identity.
Kind of diatonic-ish 'insert-aebersold-lick-here' solo at first... but the groove! Fantastic! You can just play whatever you want so long as you play it like that. :)
Whoo! Brad Mehldau quoting Bobby Timmons Whaaa! All of them paid their dues allright. No proprer modern music can exist without respect for and knowledge of the traditions.
I'd like to add that they all are swinging their asses off in a more traditional way than I'd expect from them, which is cool and different in this context.
I'd like to add that they are all very young in this video as you can tell from Joshua's solo style and look at Brian Blade! Old Newport Jazz - very traditional - I am enjoying it.
WHOA! Brad is playing super in and straight ahead and bluesy! And it's still awesome, and him. But it also shows how much his originality has developed and matured since then.
This quartet is too hot man. I love all of these players individually and its rare to find so many awesome talents that gel so well together without battling each other. They all seem to have an understood respect for each others input and they all, Redman especially, seem to enjoy watching and listening as much as playing. I love it. Wish they still were playing in this lineup.
Damn! Plain and simple, nobody has chops on bass like christian! And you would be an idiot if you somehow couldn't swing with blade and christian backing you up. Even if you are improvisation master mehldau! This is BAD!
I saw a show where he did standards and played like the era they were written in. He played Body and soul like Coleman, Confirmation like Charlie. great show.
I don't think he's a religious person. I think practicing will make you a lot better than praying. Mostly because praying is just another word for not having the initiative to get up off your ass and work but still want something.

Redman was playing his ass off then lol!!! I wish he would go back to that setup with that Mark VI.
standrick 4 years ago
Yes his playing on this video is awesome, but I prefer his actual sound, with the VI, he sounds too soft
Francozen 3 years ago
well it's not the VI that makes him sound soft. That's a mouthpiece/reed situation. maybe he needed harder reeds or a more open mouthpiece.
standrick 3 years ago
Yes, but the sax can influence a little bit (with the same mouthpiece on the balanced, he has a more edgy tone, but I don't know for his reeds)
Francozen 3 years ago
Or maybe he just isnt playing loud because he is miked....... There is no way you can play a technically sound if you are blowing your brains out
Pickpocket86 3 years ago
I've seen joshua uses some different mouthpiece.. metal or hardrubber mouthpiece. What about this, it doesn't seem an ottolink.

If anyone wants to be as good as Redman there are only 4 things you can do.
1.Practice
2.Get a bad ass 90's haircut
3.Pierce your ear.
4.And the most important is Pray all day long.
