it's nice to hear mehldau playing straight ahead once in a while...but i'm glad he doesn't always play this way. his innovation is what makes him unique, and as good as he plays in this video, i'm glad he branched out and took on his own identity.

They all seem to have an understood respect for each others input and they all, Redman especially, seem to enjoy watching and listening as much as playing. I love it. well it's not the VI that makes him sound soft. That's a mouthpiece/reed situation. maybe he needed harder reeds or a more open mouthpiece.
