If you listen to his skit, he also mentions streets that go straight up and straight down, with a stop sign right at the top...it's a whole thing about all the cars lined up with manual transmissions telling the car behind to "come around, idiot, come around!"
If you haven't heard it, it's really funny, and well worth listening to :) but I can't find it on YouTube, just on tape.
"I was attempting to release the emergency brake, slip off the clutch, and hit the gas all at the same time in the right proportion." - LOL - I know EXACTLY what you mean. If ya gotta a stick shift in San Francisco. There are times ya gotta be freakin' Fred Astaire!
Damn it I thought this was going to be racist.

Try driving down Lombard Street. That's the crazy zig zag street with all the flowers. I think they used it in the movie "What's Up, Doc?"

The place with flower gardens he mentions is Lombard Street, which is so steep that cars wind down.
I stalled out a stickshift car a few times going straight up a hill on Gough Street.
I was attempting to release the emergency brake, slip off the clutch, and hit the gas all at the same time in the right proportion.
That's the ONLY time I've ever had such problems; I stalled out twice, and undoubtedly annoyed the folks behind me.
Once I got moving, I thought, "Don't anyone get in my way!"

This was taken on our honeymoon. We're from Upstate NY, so it was a real shock to us, too.
