  • does taiji always aim for the groin?

  • What I'm seeing here is the practitioner using deception as part of applying pressure to the attacker's source of power in the form of counter attacking while shielding it with attack to another area.

Which may explain why he [often] attacks 2 specific areas at once as opposed to just one. I'm just looking at it from a psychological stand point, how ever.

  • With lightness comes real speed and real speed comes real power. This is what chen style taiji teaches us well. Combine that with say mantis style boxing and san shou takedowns and you have a lot better applications in a real time fight situation. I don't know why people insist on being so puritanical and claiming they MUST use one style and one style only when fighting. That's for the birds. combine the best of what works in any situation and then you know how to fight.

  • He has some nice kicks there

  • powerless kicks....why dont you slap him instead?backfist him?no sense of ballance or rooting to the ground...a hit must come from every muscle of your body.

  • @everybody. Come touch, then maybe you see.

  • Nice Vid, Interesting Applications !

From what I've been told, Tai Chi was originally more like Kung Fu but after many generations, the combat side practiced by masters wasn't passed on & Tai Chi is now most popularly practiced slowly (Whilst still containing the applications within).

As Tai Chi is so good for health, it's massively popular for many people that don't care for fighting.

It's very interesting to hear about how it changed over history. As usual there's many historical theories.

  • I do also think taichi would be good. However, it's hard to find good applications. For example, this student can't punch. One should not lose footing and slide while executing a punch. Secondly, he was not actually "going" for the SiFu, even if it's been practiced, i would like to see the techniques in a "real" situation.

  • hmm, still not proof of real fighting ability. Good skill, but i have'nt seen one shred of decent evidence that tai chi can be applied impressively in reality. Show us some free sparring atleast. I'm open to the idea that tai chi could be effective, but i want proof, not blind faith.

  • very nice parry technique

  • This is more Xin yi liu hue quan than Tai ji quan.

  • @babymegatron

What is your definition of Taijiquan? Are you familiar at all with Chen style Pao Choi and its applications? That is what you are seeing in this video. Push hands is a level in Taiji training, but it is not all of it.

  • I am in Sydney Australia. I want to practice REAL TAI-CHI, I am not joking, I can't wait anymore. Where can I find REAL TAI-CHI? I might have to fly over to Chen village one day to learn Tai Chi art.

  • Is there a video where real punch and kick are thrown and the man applies these techniques?

  • nice video, I never get to see Chen self defence they never seem to enter competition either. I like this very much!

  • Traditional Chen's styles do not have this method if we go through ancient Chen's styles Martial Art books and theory.

And, unfortunately, 'Kicking' within the style is soldem.

Mixing with other Martial Art somewhat like TKD fm Korea not means TaiJi is practical and powerful.

This only shows that even the TaiJi practitioner himself knows in deep heart that TaiJI is very weak and unrealistic in practical.

    Cont...

  • Wow, what a dumbass comment...

You obviously do not understand Chen Style Taijiquan nor do you understand its history or literature. The older forms (circa Chen Wangting) had a lot of high flying kicks and acrobatic movements. Educate yourself before you open your mouth.

  • @philipw2005 nowadays ppl practice taiji quan for health, but if u were to meet a real master, he/she will be so relaxed u cannot move him even for a bit.

  • @philipw2005 Kicks hurt. And even if they're seldom, they're there. But there's more than just kicks.

  • @philipw2005, Give us your evidence of Chen Taijiquan, the original Taiji style, not having kicks. Obviously you know nothing about Chen style since the first form contains many kicks including a jumping double front kick. Look up any video on Chen style Yi Lu and you will see how wrong you are. Taiji ineffective? When we see a video of you defeating someone like master Chen or his high level students, then we will believe you. Until then you are all talk!

  • @philipw2005

What are you talking about? If you actually go through Chen style martial art books and theory YOU will find kicks in it. Lao jia yi lu (1st old frame set) and Lao jia er lu (2nd old frame set) have kicks in it. Lao jia er lu also has two lower sweeps as well.

  • whoever still thinks taiji is slow and for old people can think whatever they will. in application, the power developed while meticulously practicing these sets would be too devastating to apply in an actual fight without severe consequence

internal martial arts is infinitely more difficult to learn and especially understand, but it is also limitless in skill. those who practice regular martial arts will not understand this

as our sifu Ben Der said once, "feels like cotten, hits like steel."

  • Sometimes it looks like cotton, feels and hits like steel! Thanks.

  • @zrvs lol ur sifu's name is bender

  • @zrvs too devastating for an actual fight? wax on wax off much? Keep waxing bro

  • @zrvs

First of all "internal" why do ppl say that? In the end it is just a movement nothing more nothing less. Does it mater if I punch you in the face with a so call internal movement or external movement? I study bodymechanics for very long time now I can say to you that nothing in the body can go straight. All movement is produced with cicular movement or rotation it may look straight but is not it is made up with cicular movement.

  • @zrvs Chen style is notorious for it's hard soft fast and slow movements. People who don't understand Tai Chi who are impressed with speed and only see one aspect fail to see the true nuances of Tai Chi Chuan. One step applications while wonderful in demonstrating practicality of the system, don't show these techniques in the full light. I applaud what he is demonstrating, but I don't see the melding as much as I would like to see.

  • This was an excellent demo.I practice Hsing-I.I never knew that Taiji had apps. like this! Chen / Hong style come directly from Chen village? What are the differences ?

  • Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method of Hong came from Chen Fake, who came from the Chen Village. It was taught from 1930 to 1957. It's best just to say it is different from what is practiced in the Chen Village today.

  • Totally correct, neither of us know ninjitsu.

  • Excellent video. Those who give negative comments here have no idea about who or what they are talking about. However, that is typical of anonymous trolls here in YouTube and the internet. One of the best things about Master Chen (doing the demo in this video) is that he can back up anything he teaches in his workshops and always lets seminar participants feel his power (even the skeptics). He is a real Martial Artist.

  • this is monkey style

  • Very primitive. Typical techniques from someone without ring experience or never sparred with a good striker.

  • Thanks for the comment. Both comments are valid. Been trying to avoid both. Guess I have a different view of what traditional martial art is.

  • dude... this is xin yi liu hu quan.

  • Those light kicks wouldn't hurt a fly - and looking at his movement, there's no indication that he actually has any power at all. Sorry.

  • Thanks for the comments. Wasn't trying to hurt a fly there. Was trying to hide the intention (indication of power) in this art called taiji. Guess I did a good job of that.

  • practical...quick...effective

  • Kinda hairy.. it would be hard or impossible to apply most of this video in a full speed fight.

  • no your wrong only, two out of the whole thing that i saw but, since your talking like this i guess all of the tech. would have worked on you.

  • @Aheyne .quitey true especially if against someone who could take the strikes and still come at you.

  • Wouldn't fight like that in a real fight, yes! This one is not real.

  • That's what sets the trained and untrained apart.

  • @Practicalmethod

    Good point.

  • nice techniques!!, good to see someone actually applying techniques with good skill

  • the sparring partner is putting his weight in his front legs and that is why he is always being flung around lol

  • @mista1medel ... Good call.

  • Very nice applications. But I believe this a basic level. Whole idea of taiji (especially Chen) is to follow opponent's vector of power accelerating it in your favor. When I san shou with my teacher I do not feel any force from him when I fall. It appears as I fall myself. I believe this should be a goal for everybody who wants to master taiji application

  • yes, true power is effortless. I have experienced it myself both ways. That is strong hits turned out to be weak and light applications proved to be most effective. It has to do with flow of chi and the fact that when you are strong you feel light like feather because the power ratio to load is very high.

  • Thanks for the comment. I am pleased that you call my skill basic. I consider it a compliment. High level skills come from basic level skills.

  • Interresting, real skills but nobody is attacking like that in sanshou... Giving his hole body...

Must be one more step in pedegogical system...

  • The problem with IMA sparring is that each joint locking move that made in full speed may easily injure practitioners. In Aikido they developed well choreographed way to fall. Even that doesn't help from injuries. Also there are no fascinating jumps and kicks in real martial art. Ideally there is one reaction that brings/kills opponent. Mixing martial arts with sport/whushu is big mistake.

    (IMHO)

  • Weird I c an see some monkey kung fu techniques in the video

  • Nice one :)

I used to study Wing Chun myself,

so its nice to see other arts as well to compare (Although 3:09 minutes is not much time to compare with).

  • and what if the oponent is a valetudo or a kickboxer, muaythai... fighter?....

  • For that reason, we can also ask "what if someone holds a gun to your head". Better yet, can you fight if you are dead? But seriously, we are talking about learning a martial ART system here. We are not talking about one art better than or stranger than another. The point is: does your art work the way you learn it, the way you teach it and the way you think it should work? Ultimately a good comparison is needed and a good fight is needed but we are not there yet.

  • i study my art as a combat sistem, not only as an art... perhaps i couldnt avoid bullets but i can avoid a rain of punches o kicks... and safe my life... with real and efective thecnics and a strategy...

  • That is a noble and difficult goal. Good luck.

  • What an overly defensive reply, like you were deeply offended when someone asks how do you deal with people who actively practice fighting.

  • Not offended at all. As a matter of fact, people who dare to think and try should be praised.

  • like you said PRACTICE fighting! not fighting

  • yea, what if? what if there is 10 opponents or he has a knife, bat, club or a gun. Or he is 7 feet tall and weighs 300 lbs? WHAT IF!

  • Yea what if? What if he is 7 feet & 300 lbs or he has a bat, bear spray, taser, knife or a gun. What if there is 6 opponents at once.

    WHAT IF!!!

  • use different approaches for different opponents. what if the kickboxer goes against jujitsu and the jujitsu guy grabs him?

  • no the point is speed doesn't matter. and streghth only comes from your opponent with you amplifiyng that..

    but there is accuracy.

Tai chi is not meant to be labeled with speed or power.

  • 1:19 that move was fuckin sweet lol

  • what i just seen is good, but is not what taiji is, that may as well be any other art,

    with any other application.

it's all a broken line (earth) as the main source of power.

yes it should be trained but this isn't the greatest thing about taiji.

the focus should be a unbroken line (heaven).

problem with that is no one can see why it works so is very hard to promote.

so yes i liked the technique's displayed but to the viewers this is not the whole story at all.

  • ACEMFG below you obviously know fuck all about Taiji and fighting, this clip is only 3:09 minutes long obviously cannot show an entire system itshows a couple possible applications from a couple of postures in cannon fist. Do think the viewers?

  • Systems shouldn't be judged on the separate techniques, but as a generalization of principles, body usage method and it's majority type of techniques.

  • very good

  • i didnt find a sparring match of taiji on youtube:(

  • Unfortunately the clip is that of a teaching sesson, not a sparring match.

  • It's a good demo, but it would be nice to also see it in a sparring match. I've never been in a match where my opponent threw a slow punch fully extended and then held it out there for me without defending against my technique.

And yet I can spar full out against my Sifu and he can manage to do all kinds of bad things to me.

  • Duh! it's a demo, not a fight it!

  • it's a DEMONSTRATION, not a fight! sparring is not a fight either.

  • this video is only a demo of techniques, different than if you got in the ring with him. the point is that he has skills.

  • yah. kinda. but speed and the amount of force actually doesn't matter.

Tai chi is the idea. it wasn't meant for fast or slow. the idea was its meant.

  • "Tai chi is the idea. it wasn't meant for fast or slow. the idea was its meant."

Is this one of the deep riddles?

  • very good job! i like it

  • cool!

  • Cool stuff

  • Very cool. A lot of people are crazy about application against the cross. But I'm sure Chen shi taijiquan has more than enough principles against it.
